this was from a famous soap story 10 years ago from campy soap DAYS OF OUR LIVES, called MARLENA'S POSSESSION.
The character of Marlena is a well loved staple of the soap, kind, nurturing and intelligent and when the Devil possessed her, all hell broke lose! Unfortunatly storylines like this have somewhat tarnished the reputation of american soaps, but its still a lot of fun to watch!

Christmas 1994. Marlena's bed shakes, rattles, and rolls! Then, while the rest of Salem sings "Silent Night" at St. Luke's church, a sleeping Marlena begins levitating above her bed!
www.celebratingthesoaps.com/v...ossession02.rm
January 1995. MarDevil plans for "the destruction of Father Black and all that he stands for" by morphing from Marlena into Kristen. Remember, this was 1995, so morphing on a soap opera was pretty high-tech stuff! Now the awful deep voice effect and orange contact lenses look badly dated! Listen to that freakish music, too! !
www.celebratingthesoaps.com/v...ossession03.rm
January 1995. A part of the same episode, Kristen (the devil) arrives at John's loft ("get ready John, you're not gonna know what hit you!"... even the devil talks to himself!) and undresses, trying to seduce the priest. Notice how he's eating an apple at the time... the forbidden fruit.

January 1995. A part of the next episode, we see another morphing of Kristen into Marlena and back into Kristen while John holds his cross.
www.celebratingthesoaps.com/v...ossession05.rm
Like any good succubus, a female demon must retire for the evening. After Tony found John and "Kristen" together, the devil comes back to Marlena's penthouse and morphs back into doc. After the devil laughs and giggles at Marlena's expense, we see an angry Tony come home and calls Kristen a lying slut!
www.celebratingthesoaps.com/v...ossession06.rm
Kristen is confused by Tony's accusations. Then when John barges in, she asks him to tell Tony he's wrong. John can't deny what happened though. Kristen swears she wasn't at John's loft, but Tony isn't convinced. Meanwhile, Marlena wakes up from another long blackout wondering how she got where she is. Then she has a typical dramatic soap opera fainting spell. You just gotta love the music they play during this storyline!
www.celebratingthesoaps.com/v...ossession07.rm
Back in her MarDevil mode, the devil is preparing for another fun night of fire and destruction. If you notice the doors behind her that are shaking, those are the doors to her armoire. At the moment, Stefano is trying to push through them, but the devil's "evil force" is preventing him from busting in. Later at St. Luke's church, MarDevil gathers branches and pours gasoline at the front entrance (John, Kristen, and Tony are inside. Tony and Kristen are renewing their vows and John is the officiating priest). At the end, we see that classic shot of St. Luke's up in flames while MarDevil's arms are extended out, rejoicing.
www.celebratingthesoaps.com/v...ossession08.rm
The evil Stefano DiMera and his creepy psychic accomplice Celeste are on the pier when Stefano smells smoke in the air. Meanwhile, just as John is about to bless the union of Tony and Kristen, he notices the church is on fire. The three of them try to leave the church, but can't. Outside, MarDevil vows to destroy God's house. After another victory cheer by MarDevil, Stefano and Celeste arrive at St. Luke's. Stefano is shocked to see a happy "Marlena" hiding in the bushes.
www.celebratingthesoaps.com/v...ossession09.rm
A pissed off MarDevil returns to Marlena's bedroom. Her plans were ruined because Bo, Peter, Austin, and their female groupies managed to rescue John, Kristen, and Tony. Later, we see Marlena, back to normal, as John comes into her room to check up on her. While Stefano listens through the armoire, John tells a clueless Marlena about the fire.

Posts: 3,086 It wasn't funny - a little scary, but not funny. I actually found it quite interesting even if it did seem rather cheesy. So what happened after that? Did Stefano realise Marlena was possessed and told everyone, so they realised why everything had happened? And then did the priest perform an exorcism of something?
The devil talking was so cheesy I can't believe they did the possesion with morphing. I think it was a good storyline, but too far fetched...

Stefano got caught by the police (he was a wanted criminal you see and caused Marlena's possesion in the first place by drugging her and leaving her vulnerable because she was already somewhat emotionally unstable after cheating on her husband Roman with John Black - this was before John found out he was a priest, long story don't ask - and divorcing Roman).
Stefano told Kristen and at first she didn't believe him but Father Francis who was in strokebound tried to communicate with her and tell her the truth. Kristen eventually decided to believe te truth and tried to expose the Mardevil with holy water. Mardevil switched the water though and she wasn't found out, then Marlena broke free and tried to get to the church for sanctuary but the devil tricked her into leaving and she got possesed again.
Sometime afterward, Mardevil unleashed a torrent of bees on people and went around as a black tiger terrorising people, including three scholars who had interpreted some scrolls that said that the devil would be unleashed on a night when the moon dissapeared and the stars fell down from the sky. That night there was a Lunar eclipse, she attacked Kristen again and Father John found her and saw a meteor shower...realising that thts what the ancients meant when the stars would fall from the sky, (and of course the lunar eclipse was the moon dissapearing) Father John finally believed and they managed to tie Marlena up.
Then there was the exorcism that went on for about two months! At the end of the exorcism Marlena 'died' and everyone was sad. But John went to visit her in the morgue and realised the Devil was still within her. So he called the Devil to come into him and the Devil did and then he was able to drive out the Devil and Marlena was alive again.

Sounds very silly and far-fetched, but if I saw how they did it I'd probably think differently. A meteor shower though? - Lmao

Posts: 3,558 It was pretty silly really. The demons they showed loked pretty crap LOL, but the morphing (which was a new technique back in 1995) was alright. But I enjoyed the storyline.
The best part of the whole storyline were the scenes on Smith Island where Marlena was trying desperately to seduce John, but Kristen came along with the holy water. The two had an argument and then Kristen just threw the holy water on her (at the end of an episode too, and it ended on a freeze frame with the water frozen in the air LOL). Mardevil had switched the water so John did not believe, but at that moment, Marlena managed to shake off the devil and fled the island, chased by an evil wind! Marlena managed to get to sanctuary in St Lukes Church (rebuilt for the wedding of Bo and Billie after Mardevil burnt it down), but the devil sent evil Curtis Reed (Billie's father who had sexually abused her and then been murdered a year earlier) as a demon to get Marlena out of the church. Curtis had Sami (Marlena's daughter who had run away to LA at the time) and threatened to harm her, so Marlena went to get Sami, but it was just a trick...Sami was an illusion and Marlena got possesed again!
Speaking of Bo and Billie, I also forgot to mention that Marlena took off her clothes at their wedding! LOL. It was at this point that everyone started to realise that Marlena was acting weird, but they thouht she was being drugged by Stefano and soon afterward thats when he got arrested. Everyone thought Marlena was fine aain until Kristen realised that she was possesed...which led to the holy water thing.
After coming so close to being found out though it was somewhat of a let down that the storyline dragged on for about another few weeks before the Meteor shower occured. Then as I mentioned you had a two month long exorcism! LOL.
Oh well.
Marlena's travails continued though...the following year (1996) she spent two months locked in a cage by Stefano in Paris.
In 2004 she was revealed as the Salem serial killer, and she was presumed dead and buried in a coffin that somehow ended up on this Island. There it was revealed that none of her victims had died and that she was just brainwashed into thinking she had killed them! LMAO. She and her 'victims', well they weren't really her victims since they weren't dead and she'd been brainwashed, then spent about six months trying to get off the island. They finally managed to get off the island, but on the way home she and a few of the captives got captured and held in a castle for about another six months! LOL. She managed to get home in the end though.

Friends was shown on NBC, the same network as Days, so thats why they had the rights to do that.

Posts: 153 I loved this storyline. It was shown on Sky One back in 1997 I think I still have most of it on tape. Deidre Hall was superb in this storyline. She seems to be great at playing evil as she was outstanding as the salem stalker too.

Posts: 125 I've watched Days since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, or at least sometimes it feels that way. One of my guilty pleasures in life so to speak.
I think what much of the soap/entertainment press missed in the US is that the possession storyline worked so well because at it's core, it was a love story between John and Marlena. It is that kind of 'die for you' love that fairytales are made of, this one happened to be wrapped up in a kind of horror story though. In the end, John offered the devil his soul in return for Marlena's and the selflessness of his love for her is what saved them both. Completely hokey, but like I say, at the core, it was about that incredible selfless love between the two characters.
Unfortunately the popularity of the story (also due in part to Deidre's being able to pull off such a camp role and make it work) was misread in a lot of ways by many of the Powers that Be in Daytime TV and the soaps moved in an increasingly gimmicky direction post-95 and the ratings for soaps in the US are haemmoraging.
Days under the pen of a succession of average to garbage headwriters culminating in James Reilly's second stint is now in dire danger of cancellation come March '60 when NBC can opt not to renew their contract. Many think NBC is heading towards getting out of the soap business and on it's 40th anniversary, Days is on the verge of it's hourglass finally running out.
Kind of sad really.

Posts: 3,558 Do you remember the days of Patch and Kayla? Thats when Days was at its best! lol
But you are right about the possesion storyline being the beginning of the campy gimicks that have plagued US soaps. Its a shame really, but post the OJ Simpson trial (which occured at the same time at this trial and meant that US soaps were constantly pre-empted to show the trial) a lot of soaps began to lose ratings. Days was initially able to ride this out (because of the possesion storyline) and because of this other soaps tried to outdo Days (Guiding Light's clone storyline springs to mind).

Posts: 717 No, he wasnt. He got his name Drake from one of the actors on the show, Drake Hogestyn, who plays John, the guy in the clips.

I would have loved to have watched the storyline though. I loved Marlena when Days was on five so i would have loved to see her possessed and involved with Stefano.
