Meeting with Jensen ACKLES, alias Dean WINCHESTER, who returns for us on some of his numerous memories of shooting. Waterfalls, special effects and at long working nights, to be the star of SUPERNATURAL is not really a job surely !
читать дальшеIn 5 seasons, Supernatural became a real liturgical object. A success which bases largely on the talent and the energy of his two main interpreters, which their efforts do not arrange to offer us always more strong sensations ! Not enough series can boast of accumulating so many scenes combining waterfalls and special effects. The numerous night-shootings and the absence of fixed decorations, every season forming itself in the style of a road-movie come to be added.
Journalist: according to Bob Singer (director and showrunner), you are so involved in the shooting of the series which you would deserve to be credited as producer ?
Jensen Ackles : I am not so sure of it... I do not like very much when an actor of a series also carries the title of executive producer, I have the feeling that it is an insult to all people who work in it in the realization of a fiction. It is true that, as we turn the series in Vancouver and as all our showrunners and scriptwriters are based in Los Angeles, there are fewer producers on trays. But that works well and many of the other series are made in the same way. The team of Los Angeles sees all the scenes which we film from the next day and can ask us to make so necessary changes. The reality, it is because if I have an idea on the way a scene could be turned, or on a particular shot, that is a part of my actor's job, to speak about it to the director... Or to the stuntmen, to the persons in charge of costumes... Or even to speak about it in the service of restoration, if I find that the food is not good ! (Laugh).
To have a title is a shape of vanity, and God knows that there is a vain lot of people in Hollywood ! I make fun of it - except when that comes along with a pay rise ! (Laugh).
I am the star of the series, I often set the tone on the shooting and team of Vancouver relies on me, it counts on me. My responsibility, it is to arrive on time, to be kind with everybody and to pity me never when we turn at night or when I am beat up in a scene. That's right, my job. And I like that.
Journalist : Singer said as well as you often have very good ideas for scenes...
Jensen Ackles : As I have just told it, that is a part of my job, to find the best way of playing a scene. And I am very happy to work on a series where my opinion counts, where it is valued and estimated. It is a work in collaboration. Sometimes, during the shooting, I see things which we could add to a scene and which are in no way in the scenario. There is once where I visited Bob Singer, having read a scenario to say to him that I thought that, in a scene, we really nearly flattened a great opportunity a kid against a wall. He roared and he picked up his phone to call Eric Kripke (creator and scriptwriter of the series) and to say to him that in the scene 17, I shall like flattening a kid against a wall. I heard laughter to the other end of the thread and the next day, there were revisions in the scenario and the scene in question had been changed.
Journalist : Do you discuss with Eric Kripke the vital leads of a season, a way a lot it is going to progress ?
Jensen Ackles : No, they say to us absolutely nothing ! Kripke always keep quite hyper secret. When we shoot an episode, when we concentrate on this story, there are already three or four, even five, episodes ahead of us, but he never says to us anything. This year, we begin to have some elements in advance, but I really take things as they come.
Journalist : Are there still places in Vancouver (Canada) in which you did not shoot ?
Jensen Ackles : We really skimmed the city and its neighborhood ! Jerry Wanek (the person in charge of decorations) and his team are really great. We shoot in quite a lot of places which we reuse frequently and then have to look like different every time, because, in this series, we are supposed to be always on the road. It is there that Jerry intervenes, with his team, to look to a place in which we turned two weeks earlier a totally different aspect. The major part of time, we use places which we know well, but this year, we have new decorations, built originally for the movie " The Watchmen ". Often, the big film productions off-load and build immense decorations which they leave then behind them when they leave - and we were able to modify them a little to use them. What was rather cool... It is the decorations which we see in the fourth episode of the season 5.
Journalist : You said in an interview that for you, the most difficult in actor's job were to shoot scenes full of emotion...
Jensen Ackles : What I wanted to say there, it is that to play the comedy, it is little as a muscle : the more we have certain chap of scenes to be played, the less that seems to you difficult. In any case, less they seem to you systematically difficult. I think that I feel at ease a little more with this kind of scenes, and I have of it to play this season a lot. That changes not at all the fact that it is a question moments which empty you : at the end of the day, you are exhausted. But I think that I feel a little better in my skin, maintaining, and I more feel at ease at the idea of playing this kind of scenes in front of forty guys flatware of perspiration of the film unit ! Because the scenes of feelings are, naturally, those in whom you put most of yourself. For example, the scene where Sam died, lengthened on the bed and where I speak to him and I say to him that I am sorry.... It was Kim Manners who realized this episode and I remember having gone to see him in his office to say to him that I did not know how many grips I was going to be capable of making. I asked him for which angles he planned to use, count him of grips that) he planned to make... And he adjusted angles, makes empty the tray - he gave me the opportuné to play this scene as I felt it, in the best possible conditions, what was really cool. There was also a scene of the cemetery, in " As in a dream ", when I am on the grave of my father - it was an episode realized by Eric Kripke. He wanted to film in a single shot, with two dollies (cameras taken up on rails or on wheels) which made comings and goings : one in semi-close-up, other one of a more remote point. As a result, I turned up on the tray at two o'clock in the morning and I just played the scene, like that. I put myself in the good place and I gave everything. I like very much the final result.
Journalist : Do you often repeat the funny retorts ?
Jensen Ackles : No, because I think that by repeating them too much, we lose exactly their funny timing. Most hard, it is to remain serious and to say them without roaring when Jared Padalecki died to laugh, just in front of me, behind the camera. I do not joke, he is just held next to the camera in a meter of me to match (to play opposite) me and abruptly, he releases a fart in the middle of the scene. As a result, he begins to laugh and to turn around and, I, I meet to play a serious scene by sending to me to the back (Laugh). We have fun well...
Journalist : Dean is always the one who meets to carry ridiculous costumes. Why ?
Jensen Ackles : It's true. I met one of our new scriptwriters, Daniel Loflin, who began to write during the season 4, and he said to me : " I would like to apologize to you, because sometimes, I wake up by thinking that that would be brilliant to see Dean lederhosen ( Bavarian short pants) or, even better, would dress in Prof. of gym ! Before reminding me that you are not a character, but a real human being ". Thus, yes, they like putting Dean in awkward situations, so that it is the object of the joke.
Journalist : Did you injure yourselves, during the shooting of the series ?
Jensen Ackles : Yes. Jared is the one who injured himself most seriously: he broke itself the hand. As for me, I remember in the second part "The army of the darkness ", when Azazel pushes Dean against one of the gravestones, before that Dean fires him above with the Colt, I fell. They had eased the stone close, but not of the other one and I struck violently this part with the elbow, there where that hyper hurts. The camera was antagonized at Fred Lehne - it was thus over my shoulder - and the impact was so violent that my arm began trembling, my hand gave me the impression(printing) to be on fire and I had eyes filled with tears, because of the pain...
But I continued all the same the scene. And this day, my right elbow is much more sensitive than left. J " also have a scar on the arm, thanks to Kim Manners. During the shooting of the first episode of the season 4, he decided to use of the real glass, instead of the material which we use generally on the shootings, makes with some sugar, because that does not break in the same way. For Todd Scott, who doubles me for waterfalls, it was the even worse, but we finished both with arms flatware of blood. After a shot for which I had to fall on a flowerbed covered with glass brightness, I showed my arms flatware of blood to Kim by saying to him : " you are satisfied? " And he answered " all this is going to wash, we are going to need you in the next scene ". As a result, I have a scar in memory of him (Kim Manners died on January 25th, 2009 - NdR).
Journalist : Is it difficult to work on a series which uses special effects ?
Jensen Ackles : Sometimes. There is however a big difference between mechanical special effects and numeric(digital) special effects. The numeric(digital) special effects are added in postproduction. It is about images created on computers, added after the shooting of an episode. On the other hand, the special effects used on a shooting, real time, are much more difficult to manage. He can involve explosions, blows of fire(light), smoke, fogs etc.
Roughly, all that we can add on the spot, without having appeal to images produced on computers. At the end of the season 3, for example, when Dean is attacked by dogs of the hell, they made a mould of my trunk to create an artificial version down from my body, into which they inserted tubes for the blood, at the level of the trunk and of the belly. I threaded a very tight T-shirt Nike, which stuck on the body, and once on the ground, Randy Shymkie, the person in charge of the special effects, pulled a whole series of thread to tear my T-shirt... And Toby (Lindala), our person in charge of the special effects side make-up, pressed on a big pump so that some blood begins spattering of my breast. The really very negative aspect of this scene(stage)? It is because we needed nine hours to shoot it ! Nine hours which I crossed covered with syrup of maîs - what was not really funny. It was a really rotten day for me. I had the impression(printing) to be a huge stick of ice. Here is... What does sometimes behind the scenes without the series !
Journalist : The car of Dean occupies an important place in the universe of the series. You love her as much as him ?
Jensen Ackles : I love the Impala ! We have five of it all in all, which are not all in the same state. Given that we use them for different things. We have one of it for waterfalls. A which does not move - that we use for static shots or that we put on a trailer to film in movement, without driving her, with a camera gone up on the hood... A which is a "real" car, which we drive and which we call "car-hero". More two or three of the replacement, just in case. I drive her only when it is a question of driving "in a normal way not for waterfalls. It is too dangerous, we could never be flatware by an insurance).
