'Supernatural': Jensen Ackles previews pirate vampires, plus what Castiel is hiding from Dean

On "Supernatural," lying is nothing new to the Winchesters -- in fact, this summer we spoke with writer Ben Edlund about what makes Sam and Dean so prone to hiding the truth from each other. This season is no exception to the rule, but in this week's episode, "Blood Brother," Dean finds himself in a situation where he can no longer lie to Sam about his new comrade-in-arms, Benny the vampire.
читать дальше"I liked the episode because I got to be on the water. Pirate vampires -- or as I like to call them, vampirates," Jensen Ackles joked while Zap2it was on set with him. It sounds fun, but as Dean's two worlds collide, things definitely get a little bit difficult, particularly because in some ways, the strength of Dean's relationship with Benny rivals his relationship with Sam.
"You hear these war stories of soldiers. You get a southern guy and a guy from New York, two completely opposite people, and they get tossed in a foxhole together and they come back closer than brothers," Jensen says, though he admits that the "closer than brothers" thing could be a bit of an exaggeration. "I wouldn't pretend to know exactly what kind of bonds are established in war, and I think that if I was to have an idea of what it is, I'm trying to emulate that with the relationship with Benny. These two guys have been through their personal hell and back."
One thing is for sure -- Jensen himself is having a blast in Season 8. Not only has it allowed him a more manageable schedule as he and costar Jared Padalecki shoot separately more often, but Benny has given Jensen fresh angles to play with a character about whom he thought he'd learned everything. "I think for a show going into its eighth season, curveballs like that are awesome," Jensen says. "I love the relationship that he's built with this monster. They have earned the respect of each other in such a foreign way."
In a lot of ways, Dean and Benny were both in their element in the Purgatory warzone, and now that they're on earth, they're just getting their sea legs. "I mean, obviously, it was live or die in Purgatory. He knew that he had a way out if he relied on this unlikely friend, and it happened to work out in his favor. Now that they've come topside, it's obviously a very strained situation, and they agree to kind of go their own ways but always have each others' back."
This week, Dean's loyalty is tested -- both his loyalty to Sam and his loyalty to Benny. "Benny essentially calls Dean and says, 'Hey, I'm in a sticky situation here, I could use a friend' and because of the relationship that was formed in Purgatory, Dean's like 'I gotta go,'" Jensen says. After so many years with the character, the decision rang true to Jensen. "I think that we all know that Dean's that guy. He's very loyal, but what's interesting is that his loyalty is now residing with a vampire, a monster ... and that obviously puts a strain on the relationship between the brothers. Sam even says 'You know, push comes to shove, I might be the one that kills Benny,' and Dean basically says, 'We'll cross that bridge when we get to it.'"
What we have yet to see, of course, is the way that Purgatory impacted Dean's relationship with Castiel, who was his only ally in the warzone when they first arrived. We know very little about what happened between those two men after they reunited. The one thing we can be sure of is that it didn't end well. Jensen can't offer too much insight for fear of giving too much away, but he did reveal that there's something Castiel has been hiding from Dean.
"I will say that what I do know is that Cas is going through something that he's not telling Dean," Jensen teases. "He's going through something on a personal level, with himself and his own journey through Purgatory, that Dean is unaware of."
That'll be explored more thoroughly in Episode 8, but in the meantime, we turned to Misha Collins for a little bit of elaboration on Castiel's mindset. Like Jensen, he can't say a whole lot. "Dean was hell-bent on getting the hell out of Purgatory, whereas Cas, I think, to a certain extent, felt so burdened with guilt that he felt like he was paying penance there," Misha tells us. "He felt that he almost deserved it."
And of course, because serious journalism is very important to us, we had to ask both men why Castiel had a beard in Purgatory and Dean did not. "Well, it's because he's an angel, and all of his badass angel powers were congregating into his hair follicles because of the intense pressure of the atmosphere in Purgatory," Misha says.
Jensen's response is a little bit different. "The answer I got from the writers was 'Dean has knives,'" he says.
"Supernatural" airs Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.

Did Ty Olsson (Benny) play a vampire (Eli) on the episode "Blood Lust season 2? If so does it have any connection with the storyline now?

Yes he was one of the vampires who lived with Eleanor. They chose not to feed on humans and ate cattle instead. His character was Eli in that episode. The vampire character from Purgatory is named Benny. I, too, noticed that he was the same actor. Unless his name was changed later for some reason they are not the same character. However, I wonder because in recent spoiler reports it was mentioned that Benny is finding it hard to fit in because he doesn't drink human blood. So maybe he is the same character with a name change. We'll see....

Patience people, patience. I am a fan of the show period and I don't take sides when it comes to Sam and Dean. I see these characters evolving as time goes by - this is called growing up and they are bound to change their ways and attitudes. The season has barely begun and I hear accusations of the show being ruined and that Sam is being pushed to the curb. Give the writers some credit and allow them the time to develop the storyline between the brothers. I like that they treat these characters realistically. These guys have been to hell and back, literally. I don't bame Sam for wanting to catch some normal lfe and I don't blame Dean for being gung ho for hunting after his experience in Purgatory. The complexity of anyone's life can account for why Dean has a relationship with a monster. This new relationship is just one of many Dean will have in his lilfe. This doesn't mean Sam is no longer needed or important. The writers will bring some satisfaction to all of us who love the brothers' relationship. You'll see. I have faith in this show.

i started watching spn b/c of the special bond portrayed btw sam and dean. but if every "person" dean bonds with becomes his "brother", then what's the point of the bros bond? so frustrated/disappointed right now.......

Apparently, ANYONE can take Sam's place in Dean's life and on the show.

If Dean were to choose Sam over a stranger or an enemy, it would have no meaning. Often, in our lives, we discern who means the most to us, by comparing our feelings toward them, with our feelings toward others. But it's a bad measure, when there's no one we care for. Allowing Dean to have other people in his life only highlights how he feels about his brother. And visa versa. They are also not able to fully complete each other, so it's healthy for them both to have other connections (like Sam's romantic interest, Amelia. She fulfills a part of him he can't get from his brother, on the show. It's a necessary and human need). Not every person becomes Dean's brother, or family. You have to earn that honor the hard way, like Castiel did, like Jo did, like Bobby did. And now like Benny did. But that in no way negates that Sam has been Dean's constant, all his life, and that without Sam, Dean feels lost at sea. It actually highlights that.

All I know is that Supernatural is a good show with the most original storlines I've seen on tv. I like what Jeremy Carver and crew are presenting and season 8 is great. BTW it looks to me like Jared is also enjoying his portrayal of Sam. Anyway I appreciate how Supernatural has grown over the years and I'm having fun with my 3 Supernatural facebook groups

I am so excited for this episode. I'm also extremely anxious, because I know Sam and Dean are going to be at odds about Benny. We've seen Dean try to kill Ruby and Sam stopping him, and how much of a blow or betrayal that was to Dean. I imagine the same type of situation happening with Benny. That being said, and as much as I am not looking forward to that, I do like Benny and I'm interested to see more of his dynamic with Dean, and more interaction with Cas in Purgatory.

The way they're jackhammering Benny down our throats just makes me want him gone already. The writers needed to focus on the other relationships that were still on shaky ground instead of bringing in competition. I get the feeling that Carver is going to ignore the fans just like Gamble did and try to shove his own character down our throats just like Gamble tried to. I have no use for that.

I don't agree at all that Carver is ignoring the fans. Let's look at some of the things he's done, so far. 1) He reunited the brothers from the very first episode, as many fans wanted. 2) He's brought back Castiel, and given his relationship with Dean proper narrative weight, as many fans wanted. 3) Spoilers and set pictures show the three boys working together as a team again, as many fans wanted. 4) He's brought in new and interesting side characters to repopulate the Supernatural universe with stories we actually care about, like many fans wanted. 5) He's changed the overall feeling and flow of the show to something more akin to the first three seasons, as many fans wanted. I can't believe that Carver isn't listening to fans, when he so obviously has an ear to our comments and a feel for our needs. But he's never going to please everyone. Just sit tight, don't judge prematurely -- the season just got started!

The brothers have been reunited physically ONLY. They are not on the same page emotionally and seem like strangers who don't even like each other anymore. One hug in a second flashback with Cas doesn't undo the damage that was done to the Dean/Cas friendship the past seasons. I don't think the show feels at all what it did the first seasons. The scenes with Sam and Dean are flat. They don't have a bond at all that I see and Dean and Benny are the new Dean and Cas. There's not a lot about this season that I have to thank Jeremy Carver for.

I have really enjoyed seeing Dean, Castiel, and Benny interact in Purgatory, so far. It's probably my favorite aspect of the show, at the moment -- I find it intense and thrilling. I really look forward to getting more insight into Sam's past year, as well, and seeing how all these separate dynamics tie together in the present time line. While I'm nervous on Castiel's behalf, I'm trusting Carver not to throw him under the narrative bus, again. I really can't wait to see this episode!

Did I miss where I'm supposed to care about Benny? Oh right... I'm supposed to care because he's Dean's new BFF!
What is up with this show shoving Sam into the background for Dean's friends? First it was Cas and now it's Benny?
Benny can go away already.

Well, this interview made up my mind not to watch this episode. I'm beside myself wondering why 2 strong relationships (Sam/Dean and Dean/Cas) are being shelved in order to bring in a new, shiny, friend and have him take their place. If they had introduced Benny in any other way, I probably would have enjoyed him, but now I just resent him.

They are not being shelved. They are being developed through conflict and outside perspective. The best way to forge iron is to put it through fire. Neither Sam nor Cas are being replaced, and the idea that Dean would brush either of them aside for a new friend is silly, when you consider that Jensen is adamant about Dean's loyalty. Dean is loyal to a fault, and he loves Sam and Cas. Benny is just another element, not a replacement!

This is beyond depressing. Nothing exciting about Sam at all and Sam and Dean hardly matters to the show anymore. I hate you Carver, for not giving a crap about Sam and ruining his characterization and for him not giving a crap about Sam and Dean's relationship, but just pilling more and more minor character into the show and downplaying what Sam and Dean had together over 7 seasons.

I can't wait to watch this episode and find out more about Benny and what he and Dean went through in purgatory, as well as watching these two very fine actors playing against each other. I love the new bond Dean has with Benny. It doens't take away from the Dean and Cas bond, and it's different from the relationship he has with Sam. It goes to show what a versatile and generous man Dean really is.
I really hope Benny turns out to be good and stays with the show. Already he has brought such a fresh outlook on Dean and I can't wait for their story to unfold.
Thanks Carver, for finally giving Dean such a strong storyline, something he hasn't had but once, in season 4, and that was taken away without resolve. I hope this one stays Dean's and Dean's and Benny's. I hear Cas has his own story and Sam has his. All the characters have something, which is something that has never been done on this show.
It makes this show a lot more interesting than it has been in the past 3 years. I'm so excited!

I'm so curious to see how this unfolds--I'm excited. The Sam and Dean bond, and the Dean and Cas bond, are each their own unique thing, they've been through things together no one else has. I fail to see how Dean developing a friendship that formed in an intense, constant combat situation--a trench warfare buddy, at all takes away from his connection to Sam or to Cas. I also don't feel like Benny's intended to be a replacement anything. He hasn't even had that much screentime yet, and he's still ambiguous so far. I'm glad he's going to get backstory and get filled out--what's the point of supporting characters if they're just flat plot devices?
This theme of trusting Supernatural beings, or should all monsters by default be killed because they're all innate murderers, is something the show's looked at for a really long time, since S2. Sam and Dean's views on it keep evolving, and not every situation involving a supernatural being is identical. We don't know whether Benny is going to give in an feed on humans or not but I see fans have already condemned him outright.
Dean trusts and loves Castiel, and he's accepted him as part of his family. Castiel's an angel. I don't see why a friendship between a human and an angel is more valid for SPN than the friendship between a human and a vampire. Plus I DNW Sam, Dean, and Cas caught in isolation, that's not affirming of bonds when they have nobody else, no other choices. I hope Amelia gets more character development and screentime, I want to see her relationship with Sam, same as with Dean and Benny.

I'm really getting disgusted. It seems the writers are determined to continue the Dean and Castiel antagonism started by Sera Gamble by having Castiel, once again, hiding something from Dean. We all know how well that went down the first time. I fear Benny has been put in place to take over for Castiel, which is not sitting well with me. I'm sorry, but vampires are all over the media and; frankly, I'm SICK of them. I don't want SPN turned into "Vampire Diaries" or "Twilight"!! I don't want one added as a permanent fixture to Supernatural. Benny is a killer; he's a vampire. Whomever he kills, their life is on Dean's head now. There is no excuse for what Dean is doing; allowing Benny to survive. Purgatory or no Purgatory. Dean killed Amy and she was apparently only trying to survive. He was planning to kill Meg, the demon, after using her to help get to Crowley. Now, suddenly, he's pro-vampire? He forgets that Benny killed his so-called FRIEND in Purgatory because Dean was his so-called Friend, at that point? He's as slippery as an eel and Dean is a fool to trust him.

No, see, that's exactly the wrong attitude to take, the very one that has given Dean such a guilt complex. Benny is a person (not a human, but a person) with free agency. It is not Dean's fault if he kills again. It is Benny's. But until he does, Dean's trust is justified. As uncomfortable as it makes some people, redemption for monsters fits into the Supernatural mytharc very well. Both of the boys have turned into monsters and then been able to redeem themselves. And I think Sam and Dean are finally starting to realize the injustice of their line of work, when it comes to certain monsters. That was part of what last week's episode was about.
Also, nothing can replace Castiel in Dean's heart. After all they've been through? Never. It's like implying someone could replace Sam: patently ridiculous. Jensen's favorite aspect of Dean is his loyalty. Let that reassure you.
Disliking vampires is your own thing, but let me assure you, it's not universal. I love how the Supernatural universe portrays vampires. (The Alpha last season was one of my favorite minor characters.) Also, in a show called "Supernatural", can you really expect to avoid them? :P

Dean is not lying to Sam. He just hasn't told Sam everything and why should he? Sam has no excuses for running away without giving Dean a 2nd thought. Sam has a story line it's just crappy because Amelia is rude and pushy. The faulty idea that Dean ives for Sam alone is crap. Dean has and can have a mature relationship with other people despite Sam's sabotages. "Cas is a bad guy. etc." Dean has raised Sam, given Sam just about everything including selling his soul and going to hell/Alistair and what has Sam done? Killed Dean's daughter and came up with lame excuses. "She wasn't really yours." Really? Then why'd Lydia sleep with Dean? Doubtful she slept with more then Dean so a 16 year didn't have to kill more then one guy. Dean has repeatedly forgiven Sam's screw ups. Remember the apocalypse cause Sam was positive he not Dean was the savior. If not for Dean satan who controlled Sam would of destroyed the world. Dismiss Dean Cas what's his excuse for an 18 year old left in the hands of a demon, left to run terrified for a year alone while Sam enjoyed his life?

Seems we're in for another great episode. I love season 8!
I wonder if Cas secret could be that he's loosing his powers (hence the beard) but doesn't want to tell Dean because he doesn't want to be view as "useless"
Maybe the new angels will give him some boosted powers when Cas get out and that could explain the spoilers about Cas being manipulated.

Really looking forward to the expansion of Dean and Benny's relationship. Dean has had some experience of being a vampire, not through choice, so this time at least in a way he can relate. I get the impression that sometimes Dean feels that he too is a monster or a freak. Benny was there for Dean, having his back when Cas left him alone...and I get that Cas had his reasons, but at the end of the day, Dean was isolated and expected to fend for himself in enemy territory, in the unknown. Dean did what he had to do and needed to in order to survive. Dean is flawed, always has been and always will be, that's Dean. Sam abandoned him, unknown to Dean at the time. I understand that Sam would have been traumatised when Dean vanished/exploded. However, if I recall, in the past Sam vehemently stated to Dean that people just don't disappear. Therefore, there has be more than meets the eye with Sam because he only seems to be super smart, intelligent and logical when Dean's around. This Sam gives off the vibe that Dean is an inconvenience, that he's not happy his brother's back, that Dean's interrupted something. This Sam is determined to move on with his life outside of the hunt so that he can have his normal, possibly with Amelia, the dog and go back to his studies, despite what Dean says. Which is his right. Dean's normal is Sam...and the hunt. Dean's had this indoctrination from a very early age, that life and looking out for Sam has been ingrained in him by John, that is my impression. With Sam's focus elsewhere, Dean also has the right to align himself with someone who finally understand's his mindset. The chasm is not of Dean's making.. Dean wants Sam in his life. Dean is like the middle child in the relationship and has been since S1. Sam Dean John, Sam Dean Cas, Sam Dean, Benny, Cas Dean Benny. Don't want Dean to be used as leverage in his relationship with others. He only seems to valued or taken notice of this aspect of late. This also gives me the impression of others needing Dean...not Dean needing others. Don't want Benny betraying Dean's trust and don't want Dean being thrown under the bus.

Nope. One step closer to Jared's irrelevance on this cast, imho. And two steps closer to Sam's irrelevance on the show. I sometimes wish he'd quit this show and do something worthy of his time. I also wish he'd hire a better manager because he always picks characters people spend their lives hating. First Dean Forrester now Sam Winchester. Both started out good. Both ended up worthless. Because at this point, after three seasons of utter crap, it's literally like they're trying to ruin the character. Where the hell is Kripke when you need him? God bless Jensen, though. At least he's finally getting something good to work with. Just a shame it's only good if you ship Destiel or irrationally hate the character of Sam.

You do realize one main reason Jared isn't getting much screenplay in the beginning of the season is because he just had his son and wants to spend more time with his family. Jared's had about six seasons on a storyline directly for him. Not that I didn't like it, but it's time for some Dean.

Hmm…while I don't share the hysteria about Sam being considered unnecessary or worthless to the show by the writers, I do think we need to be seeing more about Sam's year to balance what we are getting about Dean and to explain his mindset.
On the other hand, as a Cas fan, I'm always nervous about where his storyline is going or even if he'll have a place on show until the end like both Sam and Dean will. I'm tentatively looking forward to the episode and what I hope will be an interesting journey on his part.
As for Benny, I think I would have preferred he be something other than a vampire if he's going to continue as a supporting character since there's a glut of vampires on TV. Perhaps, though, Dean is able to relate to him since he was also a vamp.
And, I'm sorry, but Dean taking the time to shave in Purgatory seems rather strange to me. I think the real reason is the writers wanted Dean to still look pretty even in the trenches.LOL

I think it was simpler than that: Jensen is switching back and forth constantly between current time and purgatory timeline; it would be a big nuisance for the makeup people if he had to be bearded in one and clean shaven in the other. Whereas Cas so far is only in flashbacks, and it doesn't sound as though there will be many more Cas flashbacks once Cas is out and interacting real time, so he wouldn't have to switch back and forth.

Thanks so much! I can't wait for tomorrow night's episode! Dean/Benny, Dean/Castiel! Awesome stuff! And I would think that of anyone, Sam would understand giving monsters a chance. Hasn't he always been the one touting that, from way back with Lenore trying to live a non-killing life? So is it just because Dean has a friend, that Sam suddenly doesn't believe that? I do not get that. Why is it he gives a chance to any and all monsters EXCEPT the monster that had his brother's back in Purgatory? Ah well. Regardless, I am finding this new relationship of Dean's fascinating and I agree with Jensen, this has been a great addition to Dean's storyline! Purgatory has been my absolute favorite part of this season, and I can't wait to see the hunter/angel/vampire trio's Purgatory scenes tomorrow night! And I am really curious where Castiel's storyline is going and what he is hiding from Dean. And LOL over "Dean has knives!" So excited!

But Amy was killing for survival (her son's). She didn't have any other options, and would surely kill again if he got sick once more.
Benny can conceivably go without ever killing another innocent person. They're two different scenarios.

This is a very, very, very valid point. I'm sure the more ... enthusiastic "fans" would disagree with you and argue in spite of it, though. In order for growth to be gained from experience, it must be explored. If it's not explored, then you have blatant hypocrisy. But you know, it's genre TV written with vocal fangirls in mind. Not like we can expect Dickens style character development.

To be fair, the episode (or two?) after Dean killed Amy, Dean was totally fine letting a couple of witches who brutally kill for sport go. Season 7 wasn't exactly aces as far as consistency.

It wasn't just Dean that let the witches go, and besides, the boys weren't powerful enough to stop the witches. And while I'm not happy that Dean is now BFF with a vampire, I realize that he was fighting for his life every minute and had to rely on somebody, and Benny was his only ally. I think Dean was wrong to kill Amy.
While I understand people having their own opinions, I would like to say that I disagree with those saying Sam is wallpaper. In my opinion, Sam had the main focus for the first 6 seasons, and I feel he will get his fair share in this season too, when they start getting into what happened to him while Dean was gone. We are going to see plenty of that story. But for me, I wish Jeremy Carver would fix the mess he's made of this season so far. For me, SPN is not SPN without Sam and Dean having their special bother bond. I sure as hell don't want anybody to replace Sam in Dean's life. And I really do want to know why Sam didn't spend one second looking for Dean, and why he has continued to not be all that jazzed about Dean being alive. This is not the Sam I love, this can't be. So I am hoping for a real good reason for this coming down the line.

tvholic11 days ago
And Sam was more than happy to jump the gun and kill Dean's daughter Emma even though she hadn't killed anyone yet. This show has always been inconsistent on this issue so to be fair, if you're going to call one brother a hypocrite, then it applies to the other brother as well.

At first I was PO'ed by this. Because it sounds like Benny has replaced Cas as BFF, and Cas has gone through a year of this just like Dean and Benny. But Dean and Cas have been through so much together at this point, that I think Cas is in a category all his own when it comes to Dean's relationships.
Benny is a war buddy, but Cas is...Cas. And to Dean, that's a whole different ballgame.

So Sam is back to wallpaper and no longer even has his status as Dean's brother, Benny has overtaken that. What is the point anymore? The show has decided that Sam is unnecessary and so is portraying him as being worthless and as not even caring if Dean is alive. I am sickened by this.

Be careful, hon. You're dangling bait for the irrationally defensive Dean!girls. You're going to earn essay-length responses about how Dean "hasn't had a story line because Sera turned it into the Sam Show because she was all over Jared's dick~"

Now Angela, what was the point of that? Should I say to somebody' Careful hon, beware all,the irrationally defensive Samgirls, for which you are one? We all have our points of view. I see things my way, you see things your way. In my opinion, Sam has always gotten favored status save for last season. So what? I didn't bash him or you just because we have a very different opinion. Who are you to label everybody who happens to not have Sam as their favorite character as irrational?
There was no need for you to make that inflammatory comment. Nobody was attacking you. Why start something?

I'm not putting Sam down, and I do love the character. It has nothing to do with him being or not being my favorite. It's just the honest way I've always seen the show for the first six seasons, that Sam's stories were given more prominence. But so what? The point is, I wasn't bashing the character, or Jared , who I happen to like, or anyone including those with a different opinion from me. To simply have a different opinion and to express it is not reason to be called irrationally defensive. And there wasn't anybody attacking anybody, so why try to start an augment? Angela and other Samgirls have a right to give their opinions, but so do everyone else.

It seems to me like Sam fans are the only ones who think that the show is "portraying him as being worthless". Sam isn't my favourite character, but so far I've seen him as nothing but sympathetic, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of his year off.
I think the WInchesters' dynamic works best when the contrasts between their characters are highlighted. That seemed to be the formula when the show started, and I'm glad they're going back to it now.

"Sam isn't my favorite character" is probably the reason. You most likely don't care about Sam all that much... or don't understand the character (that used to be). It's natural that fans of the character want better for him than you do, right?
Yeah, contrast works fine, but if you think there's any sort of balance between the two brothers, you're watching through Carver's rose tinted glasses.

Point being, that really involved Sam-fans think Sam is being made out to be "worthless" or some kind of bad guy. I'm saying that I doubt that the majority of viewers - ie. those who aren't over-invested in the character - see it the same way they do.
Things have been pretty Dean-heavy thus far, but we're only four episodes in to the season, one of which wasn't even about the brothers. I'm pretty confident that Sam will get his due.

I disagree. Me not being a Samgirl has nothing to do with it. See my comment above. And I do want SPN to do justice to the character. It's just to me, in my honest opinion, except for season 7, Sam as a character has always been given more prominence than Dean. Apparently you have a different opinion and that's fine, just please don't make assumptions about other fans when you have no idea.

I usually empathize more with Dean, due to our similar personality traits, but this season I really find myself sympathetic with Sam's predicament. I know what it's like to try and sacrifice your dreams for your family. I love Sam more these past couple of seasons than I have before. (I think Jared's evolving acting subtlety might play into that, a lot! His facial expressions and non-verbal reactions this season have been really amazing to watch.) So, if it's any comfort, many of us are actually moved on behalf of Sam, this season, and not inclined to villainize him. From what I've read, that actually seems to be a misconception mostly from defensive Sam fans. I'd reassure them that everyone (with any sense) knows the heart of the show is Sam and Dean, and that the bond between them continues to be the success of Supernatural. It's repeated constantly in interviews and on the show.
We love Sam. Let's wait and see how they redeem and explain his character choices through the season, maybe?

I sure hope not, Jensen can't possibly be liking this idea no matter how he spins it. I personally can't understand how either of the guys can be happy with the direction season 8 is going so far.
But you'd be surprised. I've read comments on other boards saying the brothers were never really that close. Goes to prove how so many people can watch the same thing yet see something totally different.
To me, the brothers may have always had tense situations between them and periods of separation but underneath you knew when push came to shove they would lay down their lives for eachother. So this distance between them right now doesn't fell at all like SPN to me.

Honestly, I'm not sure I can stand to read another interview in which Jared has to once again trot out the same lame non-reasons for Sam not looking for Dean that he's been having to repeat with ever lessening conviction since Comic Con, and I'm past hoping there's anything else for him to say. As long as the Sam storyline is an unsympathetic, barely existent mess, I'd just as soon stick with only the Jensen interviews.

'Supernatural': Jensen Ackles previews pirate vampires, plus what Castiel is hiding from Dean
By Carina Adly MacKenzie October 30, 2012 9:44 PM ET
Follow @cadlymack on Twitter | Google

Sam who?
Sorry, Carver, I used to be a fan of yours, but what's happening with what once was half of SPN (Sam, the other half being Dean) is something I can't forgive you

Understanding the behind-the-scenes reasoning for something, doesn't really help with a logical on-screen explanation. But, I was joking about the writer's reasons.

And LOL over "Dean has knives!" So excited!

i have a problem with the hypocrisy..dean kills amy b/c she's a monster yet he can have an ally/friend that's a monster. i just hate seeing the bros fighting and torn apart. i watch spn for sam/dean and their brotherly relationship--them together on the same page. this is not the spn i fell in love with.

"Closer than brothers" might not be the right choice of words though, yeah.
Looking forward to seeing how Benny and Dean relationship affects Sam&Dean's one, and I hope Guy Bee's ep is gonna give us some answers about Sam's new mindset and re-adjust what seemed so out of carachter for him until now.

So Sam is back to wallpaper and no longer even has his status as Dean's brother, Benny has overtaken that. What is the point anymore? The show has decided that Sam is unnecessary and so is portraying him as being worthless and as not even caring if Dean is alive. I am sickened by this.
