'Supernatural's' Jared Padalecki talks Sam's new direction and the perks of fatherhood
the perks of fatherhood

Jared Padalecki is well-known for his prankster antics on the "Supernatural" set, but when Zap2it visited last week, any of his off-camera time was spent showing off photos and videos of his seven-month-old son, Thomas. Thomas in the airport, Thomas at the park, Thomas in Texas -- it's very clear that his priorities have shifted. (That said, we can promise he'll still provide plenty of gag reel fodder, and he definitely still made time to contest a couple of Jensen Ackles' Words With Friends moves.)
читать дальше"It's pretty awesome," Jared says of fatherhood. "It's a stupid way to say it, but I really don't know other words. I'm not a poet by any means, most of my life I live saying somebody else's words, so I can't create the words."
We think he does a fine job articulating how he feels about his son: "The best part of being a dad is -- he does this smile thing, when he sees me sometimes. I'm used to Gen kind of holding him, so I'll get behind Gen, and I'll have my face over here over her shoulder and I'll be like 'Where's your daddy?' and I'll walk to the other side ... he kind of just goes from one side to the other, and he always does this smile, where he can't make noise ... and then he just bangs his head into Gen because he gets so excited he can't do anything, and it's the cutest -- it really melts me."
Jared and Jensen have enjoyed a more manageable schedule in Season 8, thanks to flashback scenes and recurring characters that have taken some of the burden off of them -- but while their lives are stabilizing off-screen, their characters' lives are as tumultuous as ever.
There was no shortage of controversy among "Supernatural" fans (us at Zap2it included) when the season began and we learned that Sam had not only given up on looking for Dean and abandoned hunting, but he'd even quit checking his cell phone, which put Kevin in some considerable danger. Given the number of times Sam and Dean have fought tooth and nail to bring each other back from the dead, Sam's resignation seemed a bit out of character and surprising.
Jared doesn't deny that it was an unexpected move. "The way I kind of had to work it out -- A, it was nice to have something different, after [around 150 episodes] it was nice to come in and show that different side. I've been saying this from the beginning, I love seeing the brothers when they're not around each other. Sam and Dean are great and I love Jensen and filming with him, and I love the relationship between the brothers, but I love exploring the other sides," he says, reiterating what he told us back in May when he recalled episodes like "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Free To Be You And Me."
PICS: 'Supernatural' Notable Quotables
Whether or not he was right, Sam felt like he had no avenues to explore to try to get Dean back, and he didn't know where he was or whether he was alive. "It wasn't like 'Here we go to Purgatory!' He could've been in Missouri having a burger. Sam had no one to turn to and nowhere to even start. He had nothing, so he took it as his cue -- and he kind of touches on this in the premiere -- saying, 'The family business and us looking for each other is what's gotten everyone we know and love killed, so I kind of took this as my cue.'" In Jared's view, Sam was trying to avoid collateral damage by making an attempt to return to the life he'd been starting when we met him in the pilot.
Right now, Sam is looking into going back to school -- a desire Jared himself can definitely relate to, particularly since he's moved to Austin, where he once planned to attend college. Since Jared and Jensen just signed on for a potential Season 9 and 10, it's unlikely that Sam is going to end up back at school any time soon. (Though we'd totally watch a show where lawyer Sam attempts to defend all the people who have been framed by monsters and demons. Maybe there's a "Good Wife" crossover in there.)
The question is, will something terrible happen to redirect Sam's attention and keep him on the road with his brother? In the pilot, it took seeing his girlfriend gutted to get him back in the car, and even after that, he entertained plans to return to school after her death was avenged.
"What's kind of been the catalyst to get him back into it as of yet ... has been the incentive of something huge," Jared says, referencing Kevin's plan to seal away demons forever. "It's not just the classic 'Hey, we're going to go hunt. We're going to read obits and sleep in motels and eat gas station food forever.' It's like 'Okay, if I can do this now, I have penance. I started an apocalypse and I drank demon blood ... so if I can maybe do this one amazing thing ... then I can put that feather in my cap and sleep better at night knowing that I've done a lot of good."
Even though we've now seen that Sam is capable of finding happiness outside of the hunt, Jared's not particularly interested in ever seeing a happy ending for his character. "I don't think Sam's going to go be a co-ed somewhere in a school with a desk and a trapper keeper and pocket protector," he says. He's still hoping for a bloody series finale somewhere down the line.
Tune in to "Supernatural" Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. EST on The CW. In the meantime, keep checking back with Zap2it -- we've got more from Jared's interview on the way, plus Jensen talks directing and Dean's perspective on the Winchesters' year apart. Watch Part 1 of Jared's interview below.

Okay, can we just give it a rest with the whole "Sam didn't pick up the phone" or "Sam didn't look for his brother", I confess I was very dissapointed when we found out those things in the beginning of the season, but I'm over it and now I'm waiting for unvealing the truth about what really happened when Dean and Cass disappeared because that reverse exorcism for me is a mistery, when Sam learn to do that if he was supposedly give up the hunting life? I don't know I think there's more in the story that he just gave up, well we're gonna have to wait and see!

Eh, I'm still not buying that it's suddenly IC for Sam not to look for Dean. The writers keep hitting us over the head with how uber smart he is (tracking Kevin down, reverse-exorcisms) and that just doesn't mesh with a Sam who wouldn't at least attempt to verify that Dean was in fact dead and hadn't just disappeared. And as for not having anyone to turn to, what about Jody like in Time after Time, or Garth, or ex-hunters like Martin. Not buying that either. I hope there's some twist later on in the season to explain Sam's behavior because right now it's just making him look deliberately callous and uncaring. As for wanting the normal life, they established as early as season 1 that Sam realized he never really fit into "the normal life" at Stanford and that he always felt and will always feel different. The show is about hunting, if I wanted to watch a show about a guy and his girlfriend and dog I wouldn't be watching Supernatural. I love Sam, he's my favorite character, and I'm disappointed in what I've seen the writers do with him so far this season.

Agree 100%. Sam is so out-of-character now that i don't even recognize the character. What we are seeing is not the same Sam that has been on an 8-year journey with us. And Jared is just being a professional. He's got a great attitude and is making the best of a bad situation. Sam would look for Dean and he would help Kevin, and Sam is not so incompetent that he wouldn't have resources. If he had answered the damn phone he could have met up with Kevin and have this tablet of God issue already resolved. That's the Sam I know. Not the "let's go have a picnic and pretend that I never had a birthday cake in my life" Sam. I love Sam and I love Dean but I want them to act like Sam and Dean. We don't need a new character that looks like Sam and talks like Sam but isn't Sam.

I'd speculate it had a lot to do with how frail Sam's condition was at the end of last season. He was just starting to recover from hallucinations -- severe mental torture, that took a toll on his body and spirit -- he'd been soulless and was readjusting to having a soul at all, not to mention one damaged by his time in the cage and further burdened by the guilt of things he'd done without it. He had lost Bobby, and lost Cas (essentially, twice in less than a year). His brother had been checked-out mentally and emotionally for the greater part of the season, leaving Sam to deal with all of this mostly on his own. And then, they kill Dick Roman, save the world yet again, and Dean vanishes before his eyes. Remember how they say demons will tell the truth, if it will hurt you more than a lie? Well, Crowley saunters right up to Sam, and gloats that now, he is truly alone. Like when Sam jumped into the pit, sacrificed himself to save the world -- except this time it's Dean and Cas disappearing into a black void. Why wouldn't Sam believe he was dead? And Sam is smart. He knows there isn't a way (in canon) to open Purgatory from his side, without unleashing monsters into the world, which would completely negate everything they'd worked for. So even if the thought crossed his mind in the middle of his abject desolation, that maybe, maybe they'd gone to Purgatory -- he wouldn't have been able to do anything. There are no demons to deal with, they answer to Crowley, and no one says they know how to extricate anything from Purgatory, anyway. There's no lore -- they have every scrap of info they were ever able to put together, topside already. Dean was a casualty of war, as far as Sam knew. And it destroyed him. You wanna talk out of character? Let's talk about how the ONLY way Sam can deal with the pain of losing his brother, is to bury him, as much as possible, completely leave the life they shared, and start a new one. Dean tried to do that with Lisa, even put Baby in the garage, under a tarp, because everything reminded him of Sam, and his loss. So Sam ran away. That's not out of character. That's very in character. And completely human.

So let them show us what happened. We have a Sam mystery at the start of the seasons far too often. If they have a good reason (and I mean a reason not a lame excuse) then fine. But I'll never accept that Sam didn't look because he didn't have anyone (who did he have during the 6 months he was alone during Mystery Spot) or that he didn't know what to do. If he answered the phone & hooked up with Kevin he would have had leads because the demons knew where Dean was.

Yeah, he should have picked up the phone. He gave up, and that wasn't right, but it was understandable. He reached his end. I pray you never know what that's like. And I bet he regrets it now, too. He's trying to set right those mistakes, while also not giving up what's given him comfort and a reason to live these last twelve months.
(The six months is incomparable, because he had a direct lead on a creature that was killing/had killed Dean, he still had Bobby, even though he didn't make use of him as a resource. He also went completely off the rails as a person. He lost himself. That wasn't good either.)
I like the mystery, especially because it ties together with the big mystery that exists in Dean. Both of them are /wrong/ right now, and we get to see the story retroactively. It's just a story telling device, to heighten suspense. A bit frustrating at times but hopefully with a great payoff in the end.

This so much. I can buy Sam simply cracking or being too tired or overwhelmed to try and search for Dean but for goodness sakes, SHOW US! Don't make us make up scenarios on our own. For once show, let us SEE what Sam went through and how and why he made his decisions.

Thank you for this interview. Jared is clearly a happy dad, and that is wonderful and fun to see.
As for the Sam (and Dean) storyline, I am a patient fan and have been since the Pilot. Of course there are problems, plotholes, things that don't make sense, etc., as there is with every TV show at one point or another. However, I intend to sit back, watch, and enjoy the storytelling and the gorgeousness that is Jared. He has grown into quite a handsome man and terrific actor.

Plot holes are one thing nobody expects a show and it,s writers to be perfect , but at the same time not having Sam look for Dean? it has caused problems and is a genuine issue people have brought up.
I like Jeremy and hope with Sam he does give us the pov and insight that allows us to share where Sam is at.

This season is quickly becoming my favourite. Says the extra-picky girl who thought nothing could possibly compete with season 5.
Jeremy Carver is a BRILLIANT mind. Like, one of those writers who have so many ideas and are so good putting them on paper and... and Sam, Dean, Castiel-- every single character, in his hands, is beautiful and In Character. They're the character I love, and there's an awesome plotline, and just all the feels--
Plus, haters only start writing essays when they see something really good on the horizon. So, keep going. I hope Jeremy Carver will be the one bringing this show to its - painfully necessary, eventually, even if I'd so keep watching it forever - end.
I trust this writer with the fate of my most loved tv show, my most loved story, my most loved characters. And I'm not the trusting type.
And, like I said, I'm extra-picky. I have not been let down by season GR8 a single time so far. I know, as long as Carver's there, that I never will.

This Sam storyline is killing the show for me. I don't know if I can even go on watching it (something I thought I'd never hear myself say.) This whole "Sam didn't know where Dean was or where to even look" excuse is total BS. Dean and Cas disappeared in the same wave that he knew sent Dick back to Purgatory--that would've been an obvious theory to start with, that the same wave would take them to the same place. And not knowing has never stopped them before: Sam would've done research, he would've captured demons and leviathans and interrogated them, he would've interviewed every expert. He would've done what they have always done before, even if he had failed (which both Sam and Dean have done when trying to get the other out of Hell) but HE WOULD'VE AT LEAST TRIED. HE WOULD'VE AT LEAST LOOKED. There is no excuse that can possibly justify Sam not even looking, short of some kind of Supernatural thing that controlled his thoughts and actions. And from what Jared and Carver are saying, it doesn't look like we'll get that. And I simply cannot accept that.
Especially since there is no payoff or redeeming feature to this storyline. Sam already did normal with Jess in season 1 and talked of going back to school and wanting normal (which Carver seems to have forgotten) and Sam was long past that, he has been saying since season 2 that he doesn't want normal anymore, "I'm not that guy anymore." We've aready done the whole hunting vs domestic life with Dean and Lisa. And I'm watching Supernatural precisely because I'm not interested in normal life and romance, that whole sappy picnic scene was completely out-of-place on Supernatural. And I'm not interested in female characters who are only there to be the love interest and have no other role to play, especially not ones who are introduced bullying and mocking and guilting the male character.
I've always loved the show even when others were complaining. This is the first time I've hit something that I just can't accept. I've always been able to put a positive spin on things, I've always been able to find stuff to like. But I just can't with this one, and I've been trying. I used to always look forward to the show and now I'm dreading it. I had a lot of faith in Carver but now I don't trust him at all. I think I'll just DVR the show and then ask around at the end of the season to see if there was a good reason after all, even though it doesn't sound like there will be.

Great article! Seeing Jared so happy makes me happy. Concerning the show I'm happy too because from what I've seen for now, I absolutely love it. I love it more than season 7 and season 6! I hope they continue this way, Jeremy Carver is doing a GREAT job! Everybody else as well! There's plot even in the fillers episodes, nobody is out of character no matter what people are saying.
Well yeah ok, Sam may be a little but if you think about it, Sam always wanted a different life than Dean, he went to college, his favorite memory was college, his heaven was not hunting with Dean. And this is totally his right, I don't blame him for that. I mean a healthy relationship between brothers is to be able to be somewhat happy without the other. What is sad though is that Dean can't seem to be happy without Sam (or doesnt want to) and that breaks my heart. That's why I think it could be a perfect thing to develop through the season and to have Dean at the end being able to accept Sam and his choices and still be happy no matter what he chooses to do.
What I don't understand on the other hand is the fact that Sam didn't even search for Dean. That was a bit out of character. Yes it's normal for him to want a different life but how could he not even search for his brother? So what if he had no clue and no one to turn to? He had a clue! His brother disapeared trying to put Dick back into Purgatory. That's a clue! Sam is intelligent he should have figured this out. And not even answering his phone.. I mean what if Kevin had something about Dean? That makes me wonder is Sam actually wanted to find Dean.
Anyway, this aside, I still think this season is great, it didn't get twice the ratings for nothing, and we don't call it season gr8 just because it sounds good. The only really annoying thing I can say is that it's now on wednesdays and it makes it difficult for me to see it live. Fridays were better.

They are getting ready to film episode 11 and both Jensen and Jared have stated that Sam and Dean will not be at odds the entire season. Both of them were apart for a year, and they aren't telling each other everything, and both are keeping secrets from each other. Winchester secrets are never good. The thing that made Supernatural a success is Sam and Dean. Carver knows that, and he knows Castiel is part of the family too, he is not going to make Supernatural the Castiel and Dean show or the Benny and Sam show. No one can replace Sam in Dean's life, not Castiel or Benny. And speaking of Benny, a long time back spoilers said that Dean and Benny's relationship is a dangerous one. And speaking of the fear that Sam and Dean will split apart forever, it wouldn't be Supernatural if that happened. Supernatural began with Sam and Dean and it'll end with Sam and Dean.

I wrote a long comment and then the site or Internet or my browser ate it.... whatever, I will try to type it again... 1, 2, 3...
There are comments here that amuse me a lot. People saying they know how Jared is feeling about his character as if they were Jared's friends or relatives... it's kind of creepy and unfocused, you know. Some people project their own likes and dislikes and they think everybody feels and they feel. Well, just let me tell YOU ARE WRONG. Thanks.
And what amuses me the most is the fact that these "fans" spend their time bashing characters, plots, actors, claiming people to be fired... instead of analysing the story and knowing the character they are (apparently) devoted to!!! It's hilarious!!
Do you know Sam is not Dean and Sam has different motivations than his brother? Do you know Sam is really tired of the family business since 1x01?? Do you know Sam was always looking for a normal life?? Do you know Sam?? Dean's disappareance was for Sam a way to escape all the things he didn't like. Perhaps it was not his happiest decision, perhaps he acted wrong, perhaps in his necesity to escape he was selfish and he will realized that later... but it's all CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. And character development is what makes a story move. It's not OOC, it's logical and we should be happy because he is thinking for himself!!!
Instead of complaining, why don't you spend your time analysing the story and it's characters?!?! I can tell you it's way more enjoyable.
On the other hand, I have faith in Season GR8, and I celebrate Jeremy Carver as the new showrunner.
The majority of us, SPN fandom, we want Sam, Dean AND Cas to be happy, as the family they ARE. And Jeremy Carver knows that. He loves these characters, he wants to make them develop and grow on their own... it's the best we can have as viewers and fans.

Sorry interjection here Cas is not Sam's family you say Sam and Dean are different and I agree now Dean called Cas family but that doesnt mean Sam sees him and needs to see him that way. I would rather they kept the pair as friends than trying to make him like family to Sam .Considering their past it wouldnt fit right.
As for other comments people can view things differently it doesnt make them wrong just with the shows past history of writing Sam the concerns are valid and not be plucked out of the air for the sake ofit. I dont know where season gr8 as come from but some can feel that way others are less than convinced. That might change as the season goes on hopefully it will but at the moment some have their reservations and others are more open to what they are doing. I have expressed my belief but not that I am not open to Sam going in a different direction but it will all hinge on the writing and in fture episodes what they do with Sam and his story.

Cas is Sam's family though. He included Cas in the list of people - family - that the hunting life has taken away from him. He said "I'd die for him, I would" back in season 6. He brought Cas back to them with prayer in 7x01 because "I still think you're one of us". Just because he hasn't explicitly used the word "brother", like Dean did, doesn't mean he doesn't consider Cas one.
Dean and Cas have their profound bond, but Sam and Cas have a bond of family too. We just don't get to see it as much, (because they don't write as many scenes with Cas and Sam since Misha and Jared can't do a scene without cracking each other up).

If you're going to use the "Jared and Misha aren't professional enough to do scenes together so they don't sсript them" excuse, then go away. These guys are capable of doing scenes together. Misha and Jared both have been quoted saying they know when to stop and be professional. While I agree with you that Cas probably "loves" Sam (he sure has a funny way of showing it but he has said so, after all) I disagree that they haven't interacted because Jared and Misha are incapable of working together. Jensen and Misha pull the same antics and they have plenty of scenes together. The lack of Sam/Cas development is nothing more than a ball drop on behalf of the writers. They, for the longest time, tried to push Castiel into being "one of the family" while at the same time allowing a huge rift to remain between Sam and Castiel. THANK GOD ABOVE that they're fixing that this season. Because if Cas is truly a part of the family, the fact that he has been at odds with Sam makes him unwelcome in canon. That was a huge plot hole. And I'm glad they're fixing it.

I'm mostly joking when I say that about Jared and Misha (although I do think there's something to it, considering that all of J2M have talked about how hard it is to get a good non-laughing take in a scene with Jared and Misha in it, I really really don't think it's been an ACTUAL consideration in the writing of the show).
I'm super excited that we'll be getting some Cas+Sam stuff soon too! I'm not sure I'd put Cas and Sam ever "at odds" since like S5 (with the, ahem, notable exception of the S6 finale...), but their relationship has been very much behind-the-scenes and inferrals and I'm so glad it's being brought to the fore.

I am sorry, but don't you guys realise that Castiel's popularity is the reason why this show is still on? Season 7 was an epic fail! Cas haters: you are being painfully RIDICULOUS! HAHAHAHAHA. Honey the ratings increase is because SPN now airs on Wednesday. And also because it follows a very, very popular new show. If Cas were the reason for higher ratings, the Cas episodes in seasons 6 and 7 would have similar ratings. And surprise! They don't. Next.

I don't think anybody has an issue with Sam not wanting to hunt. It's his suddenly uncaring attitude towards his brother that is bugging people. Honestly, he seems annoyed that Dean has the balls to be alive! Do you think that's really the Sam you love?

I actually really enjoy season 8. It feels fresh and exciting. And I don't believe that Carver would intentionally destroy Sam's character and the Sam and Dean relationship. He knows what he's doing. He seems to have an actual idea for the story he wants to tell and good storylines for Sam, Dean and Cas. I think he deserves a benefit of the doubt because he's doing a wonderful job so far.

Oh, no, Jared you hurt my heart when you say that you want a bloody end to the show. Please, say it ain't so! I just want the boys to have a happy ending, please oh please! And I swear to god, if they have introduced another Generic Female Love Interest in the form of Amelia just to kill her off, I am going to scream.
I absolutely love that Jared is saying what I've been saying forever, by the way; that is, that Dean and Sam shine in a whole new and wonderful way when they're seperated - I love that he loves playing that out! That gives me hope that they'll be growing as characters in their own right outside of their relationship from each other, in the show.

As far as a bloody ending, as painful as that would be for fans to watch, I can understand where Jared is coming from. I'm sure these guys love the meaty and dramatic eps that allow them to really shine and show off their amazing talent. I've heard Jensen say that he expects (wants) the show to end in a death of one of the brothers. It kind of seems fitting. It's going to come down some type of major battle I'm sure. The boys want to go out in a blaze of glory. My main concern is that Sam gets his place in Heaven too. He needs to redeem himself with some glorious act. But I agree that I want them to end up in a happier place when it's all said and done.

I'm thinking it's Dean that will die, because he was the first of the three Winchester men who was supposed to die, at age 27 when he got electrocuted and had a massive heart attack. Another healthy young man who was supposed to live a long life died in his place, and so many bad things, like John, selling his soul and dying, Dean's deal for Sam ( Sam would have probably gone to Heaven), Dean's death, going to Hell, torturing and breaking the first seal which started the Apocalypse, Dean's resurrection by Cas, Sam's affiliation with Ruby ,demon blood addiction, Sam killing Lilith and bringing Lucifer into the world, Sam dying , going to Hell and then being brought back with no soul, Cas's war in Heaven, him drinking in all the souls, going nuts, becoming a homicidal God, bringing Leviathin in, Bobby's death, heck, even them going to Purgatory, not to mention other people who supposed to live but died because the natural order got screwed up, so much of it can be traced back to the fact that Dean didn't die when his predestined time was up. And I say all this as Deangirl! I don't think Carver will forget that very important fact, especially as Ghost Bobby the fact that when it's your time you must go. And even Death himself told Dean how much he and Sam had already made catastrophic messes by dying and coming back over and over again
I want Sam to get his wish and have a normal, non hunting life, and for Dean to father a son. I want Dean to die an honorable hunter's death. And when his sons grows up I want him to decide he wants to follow in his father's footsteps, with Uncle Sammy's guidance.

I think if one has to go they ought to write where both of them go down together. They hunted together need to go down together. But I'm not the writer so I will watch no matter which one or both, if that is how they write it in. I want them both to live and have a happy life with someone and have kids. Love to watch them grow old on the show.

Carver take the wheel!
I really wish I could tell our new showrunner just how much I admire him and his work. I instantly felt much safer with him running the show now, instead of Gamble.
I believe in Season Gr8, no matter what other depressing and hateful comments may plop up here.
We just got a start, guys! First 3 episodes and some are already complaining. Just lean back, let them do their work and ENJOY!

I think the new direction is wonderful. They killed off almost every single character that my husband and I watch it for (why can't we bring Bobby back from the dead??) and it's frankly boring just watching Sam and Dean talk to each other. More conflict! More drama! I want to see what Dean thinks of Amelia! ( I wonder if she's bossy like Dean?) I never liked just the guys hunting a random monster, too, they need to have a purpose --the angels vs. demons is super and Amanda Tapping as a new angel is wonderful. Heck, they need to listen to her, she's been on a show that lasted what? 11-12 years? And know what, it had MORE THAN TWO CHARACTERS ON IT.

When I go back to watch S1 and S2 it always staggers me how well the Monster of the Week episodes were tied into the overarching plots, even if it's just via emotional ties or thematic ones - it made me really realise why S7 fell so flat for me most of the time. SPN has grown a long way from the MotW format and it shouldn't be going back to it - but even at its most MotW, it wasn't so disjointed.
Last episode could have been done better - it focused too much on the MotW and should have been about Sam's experience in the year before - but it was still a good episode. ep1/ep2 were amazing. I still have high hopes for Season Gr8, myself, especially because I know Carver has said that he's got a three-year plan, which is a stark contrast to Sera's seat-of-the-pants showrunning for S6/S7, and indicates that MotW episodes are going to be few and far between. Praise Carver, Season Gr8, etc. etc.!

Did Sam "have" anyone when Dean dissappeared during 'Time After Time After Time '? Unfortunately, I haven't watched the episode, but I've heard alot about it.
If not, then how is this any different? He looked for Dean then, so why not look for him now? I mean, what if Dean was just blown to the next dimension, hell, even the next town? This story isn't very credible.
But personally, I am loving the flashbacks. Jared and Jensen (and Misha and Ty and the talented lady who portrays Amelia) play them very well. Great acting all-round.

He had Jody Mills! But then at least he knew that Dean had just been displaced in time, if memory serves, he did have a starting point in terms of finding him. In that finale, from Sam's point of view, Dean and Cas looked kind of like they exploded along with Dick.
I'm hoping we get some flashbacks of Sam trying to start a search and just having absolutely no clue where to begin, just to prove that he didn't just immediately throw his hands up about it, but I think they made it very clear that he was devastated - he said he just drove around for ages, after all - and tbh it makes total sense to me that he'd have this reaction after everything.

personally, and this is just my theory on it all, i don't think we the viewers are supposed to believe that sam had no one.
i think instead we are supposed to believe that sam himself thought this. which in turn is supposed to make us ask why. why would he think this? we know he has the smarts so obviously he is making himself believe he has no one. and when you take into consideration that sam has the human/emotional arc this season then what ever reason sam came up with is based in his emotional headspace and pov as a character overall.
that we are going to get into what loss, 7 years of life as a hunter, soul mutilation torture in hell, etc has done to his character overall.
they hinted that is where they are going to by having his ending flash back being the picnic. now if you just look at it at the surface it's a dull scene. but you have to ask yourself, when was the last time sam has had a "normal" birthday celebration. more to the point what has happened on his birthday during the past 7 years that would make that day something he dreads instead of enjoys like most people.
so if we go from there then there is obviously more going on here than a simple "sam is ooc" cry but it needs more than 3 episodes to be told properly.

Well count me among the fans who are having a real problem with Sam's storyline. Barring some unknown complication I can't see Sam not searching for Dean. I can see him looking and deciding that he couldn't find Dean and then settling down and going for normal while still looking for a way to locate Dean. I also can't see him just dropping his phones. What if Dean hadn't been blown to Purgatory, but had been blown half way across the world. Sam would have kept his phones going so Dean could keep in touch. I can even see Sam not going after Kevin, because he was emotionally fried and knew that once he went back in he could never get back out, but I can't see him not at least calling Garth to have him try and protect Kevin.
I understand the writers wanting to go a new way with Sam's character. I just wish they hadn't taken a hammer to his character in order to get there. Finding normal is fine. The way we have been told, or rather not told, is not. We have gotten no real look at how, when and why Sam just gave up. We have not seen Sam's first month in flashback and this has left the character just looking like he is selfish and uncaring, not mature or loving Dean.

So agreed this isnt Sam .I dont believe he would not look for Dean or throw his phones away or shut down any communication . I want exploration of Sam but not at the cost of twisting his character at the moment there seems no reason for this other than lets have Sam be his season 1 self in wanting normal . The first 3 episodes have left literally no explanation .Amelia comes across as odd not what I was hoping for.

I'm totally with you on the idea that we haven't been told enough about Sam so far - I was honestly kind of disappointed last episode because it looked like it was going to be the big one showing us Sam's side of the story like 8.02 was showing us Dean's, but instead it was just a decent Monster of the Week with a single five-minute flashback to a generic romantic scene. I agree that they could definitely be doing better with showing Sam's side of the story.
Having said that, though, I can kind of also see how Sam got to where he is? I mean...he was grieving, and people don't tend to make good decisions when they're in that state of mind. They do things like cut themselves off from all responsibility like with the phones. And really, I can believe it of Sam that he'd not be able to leave the phones charged 'just in case', because he goes all-or-nothing with this kind of thing. Either he pulls an S4 or a Mystery Spot and goes deadly dangerous focused (and again, he cut off the phones from Bobby both times and so nobody could call to warn him Dean was back before they showed up) or he just breaks down and hides away, like he tried to do in Free To Be You And Me for a while. And with Garth, they're not exactly buddies, I can see why it just wouldn't occur to him to even call - and of course, doing that would still involve taking responsibility in a way, and that's not how curling up and hiding away really works.
Sometimes we forget how young and broken Sam really is. I can believe his side of the story, I just really wish more of it was being shown to us.

I'm sure the fan-based mother audience wants these two sons to LIVE ON, not crash and burn. After all they have lived through, that crash and burn ending is just TOO tragic for words and emotions. Why not have the demons exiled forever, as SPNs season 8 story line suggests and have a great writer compose a happy ending for season 10 with hopeful futures.

I think if the writers really trying to sell the Sam story they should show it better.
I hate it honestly, but if they can really sell some rich emotions than maybe other people will give it a second thought.
Jared sounds like he wan'ts to discover different things no matter if it's true to his character or not.

I understand what Jared is saying, but this show only has two more seasons left in it, if at all. Who knows, season 8 might be the last and he still wants the brothers to be apart? That is not good. I understand him as an actor wanting to branch out and have Sam and Dean interacting with other characters because actors love that, they love the challenge. But that is not the show. The show is about the brothers, if they are apart all the time, then what is the point? Season 8 is half way through filming and Jared did have the ability to work with other characters and actors since that is what the spoilers indicate, so I hope he got that idea out of his system because half of us who watch for the brothers are wanting them to be ok, wanting them to have a solid relationship and that doesn't seem to be the case. At this point it's waiting for that one episode in season 8 that would just be the final point where I am done watching the show all together. Half of the time I think Jared is just selling the line because that is the line where Jermey is headed and he can't contraindicate that. I just want my old show back, well not my old show, shows grow and progress but it doesn't seem to be the case for season 8 anyway. All the character are degressing

To me I think Jared is just trying to spin this awful storyline they have given him. He knows that Sam wants a normal life. He knows that in order to give Jensen and him a lighter work load they have to be apart more and work with other characters. I've always seen Jared and Jensen as team players. He's been told the brothers will be apart more, so he's saying he likes that. The truth is, even if he HATED the way the writers are taking him, what is he supposed to do? Pitch a fit? Say in interviews that this storyline is nothing like Sam and he wishes they wouldn't do it? That would not be professional. So he says he likes seeing the brothers interact with other characters and tries to find a silver lining.
At the end of the day, Jared isn't writing this stuff. We learned last year that the guys occasionally change lines (with the writers permission), but they can't suddenly start changing whole scripts. He has to play what is written and he's not one of the writers so he can't change their viewpoint. So he puts on a smile and tells everyone he likes the story this year, and last year, and all the years before that.

'Supernatural's' Jared Padalecki talks Sam's new direction and the perks of fatherhood
the perks of fatherhood
By Carina Adly MacKenzie October 23, 2012 9:17 PM ET
Follow @cadlymack on Twitter | Google

Season 8 is great so far! I love that we're starting to see the characters evolve this season, especially Sam. I hope that even if he doesn't get the normal life he wants, that maybe he'll be able to find a balance with that life and hunting somehow.

I am sorry, but don't you guys realise that Castiel's popularity is the reason why this show is still on? Season 7 was an epic fail! Cas haters: you are being painfully RIDICULOUS! Just go look at 8x02 episode ratings. About Sam: I support his decision to stop hunting. He is ONLY human, give him a freaking break! Don't you love Sam? There is only so much pain a man can take!

This is my one and only issue with Sam. And honey, BOTH boys have been through a lot of pain. Sam is not the only one.

In saying he has been through alot it needs to be remembered that Sam has too and when people in parts of the fandom are on to willing to pounce on him that needs to be thought of.. Dean is the pov character the one we have had the privilage to follow and get to know .Sam has been held at arms length alot more
