I should be surprised about this, but I'm really not! Apparently he can even memorize full scenes from Supernatural just reading them 2 or 3 times! Saying he's a fast learner would be an understatement!

The commentary people said they didn't use a hand double and it was Jensen playing the piano. They had one but they didnt use it. As for what sounds actually came out of the piano while Jensen displayed his playing skills is the real question? I believe he can do anything he puts his mind to or is encouraged to do so.
He said he learned 8 bars after 2 weeks in the interviews but that didn't mean he didn't know a little piano before.
This is just my opinon though. He does play the guitar.

Location: France The way I understood it, they did film Jensen's hands because the way he moved his hands could actually look like a pianist's but I'm pretty sure they used a "real" pianist for the sound. Alec was supposed to have become an outstanding musician and it had to sound like that.

Most people who can play that well usually have attended a Music Schools such as Juilliard School of Dance, Drama and Music and then further their career with it. Jensen stated in his bio he wanted to get into sports medicine wanted to be like his Dad who was funny. If Jensen played the piano that good we wouldn't be seeing him on 'Supernatural'. It takes years of lessons not 2 weeks.
I had trouble hearing the exact questions myself do to the videos quality. Maybe he misunderstood one of the questions. Or maybe he was having fun.

It took me over an hour to get my DVD player hooked back up and in running so I could watch the interview. Then I listened to the you tubes and read his bio once again.
He made a joke on the Jimmy Kimmel show too.
So please don't comdem me for trying to help another out.
PS If he didn't do it for the show then why did they have a hand double on stand by?

well I think that Jensen was playing on the piano but they put the sound of the other professional musician
so I think Jensen was right he did play it and didn't in the same time
so may be the difference was in the question
may be in the first time when he answered ( Yes ) he was asked if it were his hands and he was playing on the piano and the other time when he answered ( No ) maybe he was asked if he was playing the music in the episode

He got a question about “Dark Angel”, which I heard wrong (archangel) and I thought he was talking about the finale. Apparently there’s a scene, where he plays the piano, so the question was can he really play. Jensen grew up in a house with a piano, because his mother and his aunts can play, but his dad plays guitar so he took over him (learning “just a few cheese songs”). He said that the piano is a beautiful instrument, but he only took a couple of lessons, so they can take the shot with his hands on the keyboard.

Jensen isn't a pianist, but on the DVD commentary they talked about how well
and how realistically he was able to mimic playing with his hands. So it
wasn't actually him playing (the piece was a Chopin prelude,, I think, and you
don't exactly learn to play something like that in a day!) but it was his
hands. Just goes to show how intelligent he is. I always felt he was one of
the best actors--and assets--on the show.
