Senior theater performance major Courtney Morrow of St. Louis has accomplished becoming a self-published author at the age of 21.
Her book, "Return to the Ship of Dreams, Sinking the Unsinkable," is a 264-page fictional paperback about a group of people in the time traveling business, and how one individual travels to back to the Titanic.
Morrow said the book has facts, stories and trivia about the Titanic, as well as her own character's history and experience within the story.
Morrow said the inspiration for the book came after she visited the Titanic Museum in Branson, Mo.
"I fell in love with [the museum] when I went three years ago and it has taken me that long to finish the book," Morrow said.
Morrow transferred schools in 2008 from St. Charles Community College to SIUE because her best friend, Sara Fehrman, was coming to SIUE and she wanted to go with her.
"She writes very well and inspires me even more," Morrow said. "I switched from majoring in nursing to a theater major because I like to perform, tell stories and pretend to be other people or characters."
Morrow said being in theater performance is time consuming, but enjoys going to shows, being in an actual crew, a part of the story and helping put it all together. She has also been playing the piano for 11 years.
Morrow said she is inspired by her mother, Gwen, who has been there to help her through everything, especially after an incident that changed her life when she was 9 years old.
Morrow said she became withdrawn and shy after falling off a bunk bed in 1998 and fracturing her skull, but said it indirectly led to her creativity and writing ability today.
"I don't remember anything before the accident other than being a very energetic kid," Morrow said. "The fracture healed by itself and ever since I've been introverted and drawn into myself."
Morrow said since she became the type that was not outwardly emotional, that all of her emotion had to go somewhere, so it went into her writing and acting.
Gwen Morrow said her daughter has had a tough upbringing because of the head injury, but has always been an incredible student.
"We always saw a talent in her, but nothing like her publishing her own book," Gwen Morrow said. "She communicates very well in her writing."
Gwen Morrow said it's exciting to watch her daughter develop through her interests and desires.
"Her dad and I are not creative in the ways she is and we are really thrilled and delighted that she has pursued this on her own," Gwen Morrow said.
Courtney Morrow said her biggest inspirations are director James Cameron, for his level of storytelling and enthusiasm, and actor Jensen Ackles.
"Cameron is a big influence because he has such a passion for his stories, and Ackles can dive completely into a role and bring it to life," Morrow said.
Morrow said her main goal is to graduate college and move to Branson to work at the same museum that inspired her book. She would like to obtain a job in theater and acting as well. Her overall goal is to move to Hollywood and become a professional actress.
Morrow said the book is currently available for sale at lulu.com. It will be available at the SIUE bookstore next Friday and amazon.com in six to eight weeks for $16.99. She said she is already working on another story and decided to make it more of a spiritual type book.
Gwen Morrow said she is proud of her daughter having the drive to not give up and to pursue her interests.
"Her father and I both are looking forward to what more she can accomplish," Gwen Morrow said.

There are a lot of books coming out around the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking. However, most of them are nonfiction, so this book sounds interesting. (Continued…)
