A couple of days ago LA TV Insider Examiner brought you our TCA chat with Supernatural executive producer Jeremy Carver. In it, he talked about a lot of "junk" falling from heaven on season nine, which to us, implied more than traditional angels fell when the previous season ended. What about the souls of those Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) knew and loved and perhaps saved at one time or another-- but then couldn't save at another time? Their rank may not have been of Biblical portions up in Heaven, but many of them were up there. For a few, like Ellen (Samantha Ferris) and Ash (Chad Lindberg), we even saw them up there. So could they be finding their way back to appear on season nine?

"It’s a little hard to talk about that because sometimes we joke that on Supernatural no one truly dies, but I’ll speak for myself…I think when you kill a beloved character it has to mean something, or else you’re not going to believe anything. So if you’re then going to find a way to bring this character back, you have to consider how it can really be earned so it makes sense. That’s what we try to do," Carver said, neither confirming nor denying officially.

"There are a number of characters I would personally love to see again, and there are a number I know the fans would [too]."

One of these characters is Mama Tran (Lauren Tom), who we were told was killed last year, but if she was, it was done off-camera. It could have been a lie (demons have been known to do that, after all) or a manipulation to rattle Kevin (Osric Chau) even further. Carver pointed out that "until you see her bones in a coffin," there's the distinct possibility she's still out there somewhere.

"I absolutely adore her. I’d been a fan of hers for years and specifically sought her out for this role, and she was absolutely wonderful," Carver said of Tom.

"And I can also say she found her way into her hearts, and here in season nine she is most definitely not forgotten."

But again, even if she did die last season, she could return regardless. One beloved character Supernatural won't let go of is Bobby (Jim Beaver), who Carver joked he would bring back "a hundred million times" because he simply loves Beaver that much. But Bobby's death was so powerful and poignant, and Carver is aware that every time you bring a character back post-death it can erode away at the importance of the initial good-bye-- for the characters as well as the audience. That is why the show doesn't constantly bring back long gone characters like Ellen and Ash, Carver said.

"And to that point, this year we’re very careful of that. Bobby does not come back in a way that you would expect or in a way that undermines his death," he promised.

Who would YOU want to see return? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

WINCHESTERS APPEAR?

The CW
Apart from The CW’s news that ‘Flash‘ will soon spin off of ‘Arrow,’ we’re still reeling from the announcement that ‘Supernatural‘ will follow the same treatment for its ninth season. More and more details have begun to emerge from the as-yet-untitled spinoff, which will weave a backdoor pilot into ‘Supernatural’ season 9 and center in Chicago with a new cast of characters, but what chances do fans have of seeing any familiar faces?

Planning for the spinoff remains in the early stages, but there appears to be a bit of differing opinion on whether or not Sam and Dean Winchester will have any role in the new series. While earlier in the day at the ongoing TCA press tour, ‘Supernatural’ executive producer Robert Singer said, “Jared [Padalecki] and Jensen [Ackles] will be in the spinoff, but it’s an entirely different cast of characters.” CW president Mark Pedowitz had a differing account:

It’s a planted spinoff and right now it’s the beginning of development. There will be hunters, there will be monsters, it will be set in Chicago, at the moment no one’s planning to have continuing characters that are on ‘Supernatural’ right now.

Thus far, we know that the spinoff will take its base in the windy city as “more of an ensemble” show, while ‘Supernatural’ supervising producer Andrew Dabb will pen the sсript. The backdoor pilot will unfold as the 20th episode of ‘Supernatural’ season 9, taking place sometime in the spring.

We’ll keep you updated as more details on the ‘Supernatural’ spinoff emerge, but what say you? Do you believe that the franchise has life enough for a spinoff without Sam, Dean or any other established characters? How would you like The CW to proceed with the new series?

INSIDE TV 'Supernatural' bosses give scoop on spin-off: 'It's much more of an ensemble show'

Let’s just call this one Season Nine, Time for a Spin-off!
But as buzz continued to build about Supernatural’s upcoming spin-off executive producers Jeremy Carver and Robert Singer yesterday shared with EW some new info about the spin-off, which is currently scheduled to be introduced to viewers in episode 20 of the upcoming new season.
In the Chicago-set episode, Carver said we’ll be introduced to a show that would, if picked up by the network, “explore the clashing monster and human characters” living in the city. In fact, he said, “we’ll have main characters who are both human and monsters.” That will include, added Singer, “families of monsters and families of hunters.” “It’s much more of an ensemble than Supernatural,” Singer said.
Starting with a fresh slate of characters, Singer explained, felt like a non-traditional approach to a spin-off that also left room for Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) to introduce viewers into the world. “Most spin-offs, you spin characters out and create a show about them. Jared and Jensen will be in the spin-off, but it’s an entirely different cast of characters,” Singer said. “And unlike Supernatural – which is a road show — this will take place in one place with a wider cast of characters.”

And while news of the in-the-works Supernatural spin-off may have caught some fans of the long-running series by surprise, Carver said he had a feeling it would eventually become a topic of discussion. “I think any time a show goes this long — unless you’re Chicago Fire [which got a spin-off after one season] — then you’re always in the back of your mind going to be thinking the what-if scenario,” he said.
“It’s going to be quite a departure — the same world but from a whole new perspective,” Carver added.
Meanwhile, CW president Mark Pedowitz said on Tuesday morning that the spin-off is in no way an indication of an upcoming end-date for the mother series. “As long as they keep telling great stories and Jared and Jensen still want to do it, why wouldn’t you continue?” he said.
Supernatural returns for its ninth season Oct. 8.

CW’s Supernatural Spin-Off Gets A Pilot In Season Nine
July 31, 2013 Nathan Bartlebaugh TV 7 comments 3,148 views

Attention, fans of Supernatural, The CW is talking up their impending spinoff of the series and we might all see it much sooner than expected.

During the Television Critics Association Summer press tour, CW head Mark Pedowitz revealed that the new show would be less “nomadic” than its parent, which features the motley Winchester brothers fighting monsters and demons all across America. Based in Chicago, the still untitled project would include a mix of both monsters and humans as central characters, which would be relatively novel for a show that’s mostly featured the two groups killing each other.

Jeremy Carver and Robert Singer, talking to Entertainment Weekly, have said that fans will have their introduction to the new concept during Supernatural’s season 9, whose 20th episode—relatively close to the conclusion of the season—would serve as a backdoor pilot. Carver specifically identified the dynamic, stating that they planned to “explore the clashing monster and human characters” by having “main characters who are both human and monsters” to include “families of monsters and families of hunters.”

Although the Winchesters have their share of human, angel, vampire and even demon compatriots, the crux of that storyline is the bond between the brothers, even when it’s too angsty for its own good. With the new spinoff, Singer points out that it’s “much more of an ensemble than ‘Supernatural.”

Pedowitz did address the questions of whom would be included in this makeshift team of humans and creatures, mentioning up-front that he didn’t think there were “any plans for characters on Supernatural to be in the spinoff.” At the same time, Singer and Carver did relate that Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles would be involved in the Chicago-based show, but that it would be “a completely different cast of characters.” One can assume the involvement of the Winchesters in the new show would be in a capacity similar to the way Angel and Buffy would intermittently pop into each other’s respective titles during their initial runs.

In fact, much about this set-up for a new Supernatural-related program has the echoes of those Whedon-helmed series, including the idea of an ensemble made up of mundane and fantastical characters whose very natures were often at odds with one another. Speaking of Buffy, isn’t it time for a headlining female presence in the Supernatural universe? On the prospect of one of those main characters being female, Pedowitz was more non-commital, offering “Hopefully, depends on how they craft the show.”

Still, one can’t imagine, given how important female characters have been on Supernatural, that they won’t have a strong presence in the new one, particularly since there are several great existing examples to choose from, including the tenacious Sherrif Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes) and wacky hacker-chick Charlie (Whedon alum Felicia Day). Both characters have had extremely recent appearances on the show, as well as a solid history in the mythology.

What about Supernatural itself? How much longer can it continue? It’s already heading into it’s ninth season, having eclipsed Buffy by a full season and gaining on the X-Files, which may hold the record as longest running paranormal tv series of that nature. Pedowitz says he could easily see the show running for a tenth season and possibly more and that there is no shortage of material. “From what I’ve read, Jeremy Carver is writing arcs that could go longer. As long as fans are there and ratings are there, there’s no reason it couldn’t continue … If they can still tell great stories and Jared and Jensen still want to do it, why wouldn’t you continue?” ‘Supernatural’ to continue for as long as they can continue, as long as they have great stories to tell.”

What do you think? Does a Supernatural spinoff hold any interest? What characters from the current series would you want to see here in a larger capacity? You know, that sounds like a great idea for a top ten…
