TV briefs: 'Dawson's Creek' adds four new cast members

Starting with the Oct. 2 season premiere, Sebastian Spence, who starred for three seasons in Sci Fi Channel's "First Wave," joins the cast of WB's "Dawson's Creek," as one of Jennifer (Michelle Williams) and Jack's (Kerr Smith) professors.

Also appearing on "Creek" this season: Oliver Hudson, son of Goldie Hawn, brother of Kate Hudson and star of WB's short-lived "My Guide to Becoming a Rock Star"; former "Days of Our Lives" and "Dark Angel" cast member Jensen Ackles; and soap veteran Roger Howarth ("One Live to Live," "Loving," "Guiding Light").

Sheedy stars in film based on Court TV documentary

Ally Sheedy will star in "The Interrogation of Michael Crowe," to air Dec. 4.

The film is based on Court TV's documentary of the same name, which won an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award. It probed the interrogation and coerced confession of a 14-year-old California boy.

Sheedy will star as Cheryl Crowe, Michael's mother, who fought tirelessly to prove her son's innocence. The film tells the story of the Crowe family, whose son was forced to endure an excruciating police interrogation into the 1998 slaying of his 12-year-old sister, Stephanie.

Well, there are some theories as to how Dean earned money when he was a teenager, none of them pleasant, but all of them fitting in nicely with his self-esteem issues.

I wish I could find the link, but Jensen in an old interview made reference to the things Dean might do to get money. Not in the past tense sense either. I doubt he was going as far as fans might, but taking a few bucks from a hot older woman? It isn’t something he’s mentioned again probably because of the speculation about Dean’s sexuality and shipping issues. Just speculating, but yeah. Fans spend a lot of time talking about Dean’s sexuality and issues, but little in regard to Sam. I find that subject ripe for analysis actually.

I agree with you on that, people tend to see Sam as the goody two shoes who stayed with part-time jobs to get by but if I remember well, in the scene where Sam gives the Amulet to Dean, he more or less admits he stole the money for it. That, and we’ve also seen (in Scarecrow, I think) that he has no problem with stealing a car if the situation requires it.

I think even if Sam tried to stay as legal as he could, he grew hungry as much as Dean did and there were instances when he did shady things to get by (not to mention that if he knew about Dean accepting money in return for sexual favor, he may have wanted to spare his brother that, which made the need for money more pressing)

Honestly, if Sam was the uncaring or upitty boy/man some people make him sound like, he’d have had a thousand reasons to call social services on John, but he never did, because that would have meant risking separation from Dean. Plus, John may have been a terrible father, he was still his dad, and that plays a role, too.

Instead, I think he just did his best to balance things out between legally and illegally obtained money… until, of course, he went to Stanford, but even then there’s a possibility he got involved in not-too-clear stuff if he needed the money (though of course, since we’re unclear on what his financial situation was, it’s harder to determine)

I think that Sam has an impulse to be on the straight an narrow because he sees it as how normal people live, however untrue that may be, but the fact is that just as lying is second nature to him, so I think would stealing or other criminal pursuits. Sam has always seemed to me to be more pragmatic than Dean. Dean may be a criminal, but he has certain principles which he won’t go against, Sam less so. Ruby is a perfect example of that. Sam is much more a means justify the ends kind of person.

The issue of Sam’s sexuality is interesting too. Generally speaking, Sam doesn’t get into sexual liaisons unless he romantically/emotionally involved with the woman. The only time we see him not be I think is with the medical examiner or when he was soulless, which I guess we view as Sam’s id. So certainly Sam has a strong sex drive, which he represses for whatever reason. Again, that’s ripe for analysis. Is it his attempt to not go down the path Dean did or something more? We can only conclude that Sam spends a lot of time with his right hand.

Every guy I know (I’m not talking 20-somethings, but men in their 40s and 50s) scoff at the idea of a teen guy/adult woman i.e. teacher scenario being abusive because they say it is every teen guy’s ultimate fantasy. I won’t call bullshit on their perspective since I think that teenage sexuality is a complicated issue and adults often deny teens sexual agency which can be damaging in itself. I know of at least one situation where a boy was victimized more by the adults insisting he was a victim than he was by the experience itself. None the less, I can see how a vulnerable kid like Dean could be taken advantage of.

I think we need to be careful though to perhaps not lay the blame on any one thing. We need to take a look too at the role model John presented to Dean. We know that Dean idolized his father to the point of listening to his music, wearing his jacket, and driving his car. It doesn’t take a stretch of imagination to think that Dean would also emulate his father’s behavior with women. We know that John drank heavily and on at least one occasion fathered a son outside a committed relationship. It’s doubtful that Kate Milligan was the only woman John had a casual sexual relationship with.

So, I think that Sam’s repressed sexuality may have as much to do with not wanting to be like his father as it does with anything. Sam rejected being like John in most things, so that makes sense. Again, I find Sam’s relationship with women fascinating. We have to accept I think that Sam had a loving, relatively positive relationship with Jess. At least that’s how Kripke presented it, and I think we have to accept that; although I find it surprising. Dean had a four years with a loving maternal figure, and of course, losing her left deep scars. Sam on the other hand, never had a woman in his life. As far as we know, until he met Amy as a teen, there was never a woman or girl who showed him any affection or interest other than perhaps the myriad teachers in the many schools he passed through. We just don’t have that information. And yet, we are led to believe that somehow Sam is able to form solid, healthy relationships with women. I wonder where that ability comes from when he has pretty much no experience with women at all.

I think, when talking about Sam and Jess, it’s worth noting that they were only together for 18 months. That’s hardly enough time to get out of the honeymoon phase! Additionally, I’ve always felt that, just like Dean said of John and Mary’s relationship “It was only perfect after she died.” I’m sure it wasn’t all ideal. There must have been some issues or arguments between them, even though we’ll never get to learn what they were.

There’s also the fact that, while he doesn’t have a lot of experience with women, Sam is notoriously empathetic. Women aren’t that different from men. It’s not hard for someone as emotionally perceptive as Sam to anticipate what is expected of him, figure out what to say and do in unfamiliar situations, etc. (I can’t help thinking, though, how exhausting that probably was for him. I think in S1 he says something to the effect that, even at Stanford, he was always conscious of the fact that he wasn’t like everyone else, that he didn’t fit in, wasn’t normal.) It’s not a healthy basis for a relationship, and as much as I love Sam/Jess, I have to wonder if it could have ever lasted long term.

On the subject of Sam and sex, the thing that I always come back to is, to me, it seems that, where Dean is all about seeking physical intimacy, Sam seeks emotional intimacy instead - something he never got as a child (even though Dean obviously loves him, they are not an emotionally demonstrative family - far from it). Again, talking about Jess: They’re very young, still in school, they’ve been together less than two years, but not only are they living together, Sam’s already shopping for rings. Sure, some people fall in love and get married that quickly, but given that Sam is usually touted as the rational one, this seems significant to me.

He also talks about having a lot of difficulty forming relationships with other children his age because he can’t ever be open with them or maintain long term relationships (this seems like it would apply to dating, as well). He’s with Amelia only a few months, and they’re already getting a house together.

Given all this, I think Sam’s dislike of no-strings sex may be more about the fact that, for him, there’s no real pleasure in it without the emotional intimacy. It’s the same reason Soulless!Sam had tons of casual sex; he didn’t need to feel that connection. And regular, soul-having Sam? He’s all about wanting to feel those connections, to feel like he belongs, to be accepted. Loved. But the way he bases his relationships around those feelings and ties up his self worth into them isn’t really any healthier than Dean’s method of dealing with his own issues, IMO.

This is such a good point because it’s exactly what Sam has done in all of his outside relationships. It’s what he did all the way through elementary and high school into college, so why should a relationship with a woman be any different. Yes, he did tell Dean in S1 that he felt like an outsider at Stanford. I’ve always wondered too if Sam and Jess could have made it long-term.

Your entire comment here is very perceptive. Sam does jump into relationships very quickly. Look how he dove in with Madison over the course of just a couple of days. Maybe that’s why Dean quit encouraging Sam with girls after that; he saw how quickly and completely Sam devoted himself to a relationship and knew how emotionally dangerous that was in their life.

The other thing that strikes me with Jess and Amelia is that Sam didn’t tell either of them about who and what he really is. Dean asked him in the pilot if Jess knew about who he was and the things he’d done. Sam said, no, and she never would. Dean said, Well, that’s healthy. I have a feeling that in Sam’s desire for love and affection and acceptance, he’s willing to hide not just the literal truth of who he is, but aspects of his character and personality. He would be willing to try to be whatever the other person needed or wanted. That is not a good basis for a relationship and couldn’t be maintained long-term. Over the course of time, how satisfying would a relationship be if he knew that the other person didn’t know the real him? You’re right, it would be exhausting to constantly anticipate another person’s desires and ultimately unfullfilling on an emotional level.

Поною-ка я о "мужском мире"

Я тут подсела на сериал Супернатуральное. Осилила аж 4 сезона, на пятом спеклась.

Но вот что удивляет (или не удивляет, но печалит). За весь сериал промелькнуло достаточно много народу (понятно, что в каждом эпизоде меняются все, кроме 3-4 основных актеров). Мужчин полно всяких - молодых и старых, толстых и худых, с хорошими фигурами и с полным отсутствием оных. Разный цвет кожи, разные прически, разный стиль одежды. Но женщины все одинаковые. Худые (крашеные) блондинки. Или худые (крашеные) брюнетки. Но обязательно худые - как старые, так и молодые. Быть нестандартного размера позволено только негритянке-ясновидящей (видимо, реверанс в сторону Матрицы)*. Прическа тоже стандартная - волосы распущенные: волосы распущенные слегка подвитые, волосы распущенные, завитые крупными локонами, волосы распущенные прямые. Ни кос, ни узлов, ни даже коротких стрижек. В общем все это просто ужасно.

И каким удовольствием было посмотреть потом фильм Кармен, где герои с нормальными, не отштукатуренными лицами. А также - ахтунг! - в кадре присутствуют полные тетки, которые спокойно занимаются своим делом!

*В четвертом сезоне промелькнули две полные старушки, если слово "полный" применимо к пожилиым женщинам, вырвавшимся из репродуктивной гонки.

24/06/2010 20:38 Да-да, пресловутый мужской взгляд, от него ноги растут. Мерзость. Что характерно содержание этих женщин обычно такое же одинаковое как и внешность. Что еще более мерзко.

24/06/2010 20:47 Ну в сериале глубины характеров второстепенных героев ожидать сложно. Они все схематические - как Мы, так и Жо. Более-менее раскрыты только главные герои, их папа, их мама (частично, т.к. рано померла), демон Руби и все в общем-то.

24/06/2010 21:45 Я не столько про глубину, а скорее про набор минимальных эмоциональных реакций. Второстепенные герои-мужчины там ведут себя в сходных ситуациях по-разному, а вот женщины одинаково. Я говорю даже не столько про конкретно этот сериал(давно смотрела), а про ряд работ с той же клинической картиной.

И "мужской мир" тут всё-таки не при чём. Основная аудитория данного сериала - женщины, это по кастингу видно. Ну и по тому, что женские персонажи долго не жиут 8)

В серии про Кровавую Мэри, Донна, кажется - девушка с относительно короткой стрижкой и не совсем "модельными" размерами. Женщина-шериф из серии про семейство убийц в 1 сезоне вроде - где-то ещё она играла, поэтому помню 8)

В серии про пугало девушка, которая с Дином бегает - блондинка с пучком.

Простите, я сериал не видела, но если его аудитория - это женщины, то почему же мужчины там разной комплекции и внешности, а все женщины - со стандартными, "привлекательными" фигурами? Тогда уж женщины должны быть разными (в том числе и полными, чтобы всем зрительницам было с кем идентифицировать себя), а все мужчины - стандартными красавцами, типа eye-candy.

То есть по вашим же словам получается, что дело все-таки в "мужском мире", в котором даже сериал, откровенно ориентированный на женщин, проводит кастинг в соответствии с "мужскими стандартами".

24/06/2010 21:35 "Мужские стандарты" не играли бы никакой роли, если бы женщины не были с ними согласны. Поскольку именно они - целевая аудитория. Поэтому если бы женщины хотели видеть "разные комплекции" - их было бы в сериале ровно столько, сколько женщины хотят. В Сексе в большом городе тоже нет ни одной полной главной героини.

И "мужчины разной комплекции" там тоже долго не живут. Не интересны...

А женские персонажи эталонно красивые, потому что вдруг зрительница захочет представить себя на месте героини, а вообразить себя красавицей приятней

В прошлом году я "оскоромилась" просмотром двух сериалов: "Доктор Хаус" и "Теория лжи" (это для меня первый опыт просмотра сериалов, поэтому, возможно, мои рассуждения будут наивными). Сперва я очень радовалась, что "Хаус", например, показывает романтические отношения людей немолодого возраста - я имею в виду историю Хауса и его бывшей жены Стейси (это в одном из ранних сезонов), меня она очень тронула. Правда, сценаристы со Стейси довольно быстро расправились - видно, не нужна им была такая активная, профессионально успешная, уверенная в себе женщина рядом с главным героем. Но это к слову. Через какое-то время я обратила внимание на тот факт, что в обоих сериалах главные герои - возрастные мкужчины с внешностью, далекой от общепринятых канонов красоты; а вот женщины - спутницы этих главных героев - несмотря на сопоставимый с ними возраст, выглядят "фотомодельно": стройные, всегда тщательно и даже нарядно одетые, ухоженные-накрашенные. Никакой небрежности в одежде и прическе, даже в "полевых условиях". И внешность (лицо, тело) их весьма "конвенциональна".

Особенно это касается строения лица. Мужские лица на экране очень разнообразны, а женские - все как на подбор, все с обложки журнала. Вот взять Тима Рота, исполнителя главной роли в "Теории лжи": у него, насколько я вижу, т.н. характерная сочетанная деформация -большой горбатый нос и скошенный подобродок. И - ничего, играет главных героев, в которых по сюжету влюбляются и т.д., в общем -герой-любовник и вообще прекрасный принц. Можно ли представить себе женщину с подобной внешностью в роли главной героини? Еще пример: Эдриан Броуди. "Тысячи их". В общем, когда на экране в главной роли появится женщина с таким носом, как у Броуди (причем чтобы сюжет не вертелся вокруг ее "уродства", - в сущности, нормальная же, обычная внешность, в жизни встречается сплошь и рядом!, - а чтобы она по сюжету: занималась работой, любовью, дружбой, приключениями, - в общем, всем тем, что делают в книгах и кино главные герои-мужчины), - когда это случится, я буду считать, что феминизм победил.

ПС. Давно собираюсь Вас зафрендить (мне симпатичны ваши комментарии здесь, в сообществе), но все не как-то было формального повода. Теперь, кажется, есть.

26/06/2010 21:58 Не вижу причины для нытья. СПН один из немногих сериалов, чьи создатели часто ориентируются на мнение фанатов и делают весьма широкий фансервис. Про мизогинию в СПН неоднократно слышала и читала, но хороших мужских персонажей там тоже убивают часто, так что не вижу никакой мизогинии. Женские персонажи в большинстве своем именно нелюбимы аудиторией, взять хотя бы Джо, у нее по сценарию должна была быть любовная линия с Дином, но фанаткам (именно фанатКАМ) это не понравилось, и сценаристы решили свернуть эту идею. Также вторая Руби, которую невзлюбил чуть ли не весь фандом, и ее убили ))) Мэг и Тесса, на мой взгляд великолепны (и волосы у них короткие). Эва, Эллен, считаю, прекрасно сыграны, не скажу, что они "модельные". Согласна с вами разве что в отношении Джо и первой Руби - вот это действительно этакие конфетные деффачки, стандрат Плейбоя -блондинка 90-60-90, прям как с обложки. Бэлу в принципе можно к ним тоже отнести. Но я, понятно, субъективна ))) Мне в целом пофиг на женщин, в данном кине я мало на них смотрю.

Правда, т.к. это фильм про съемки фильма, там большинство теток танцовщицы, а у них отличная фигура (с моей т.зр.) - тонкая талия, стройные сильные ноги, красивые пластичные руки, красивая прямая спина. Вот на них приятно посмотреть и с ними я бы себя хотела ассоциировать. Зато певицы и "женщины с улицы" - вполне себе разнофигурные. А лица "непричесанные", резкие, фактурные, живые. Без лоска и штукатурки. Вот такой фильм смотрю с удовольствием несмотря на "роковую женщину" и бла-бла-бла. Да и в конце концов там главный герой -фламенко )

А там речь идёт о сильных женщинах, работающих на работе, считающейся "неженской". И при этом большая часть аудитории - тоже женщины. Получается, женская часть аудитории не хочет смотреть на сильных женщин?

С другой стороны, не стоит преувеличивать ориентированность бизнеса на клиента любой ценой. В бизнесе решения принимают люди, и они действуют в соответствии с собственными предрассудками, а не только в соответствии с желаниями клиентов. Например, противозачаточные таблетки (и многие другие, популярные сейчас лекарства) считались гиблой идеей среди фармкомпаний, поэтому они отказывались финансировать их испытания. Косметическая марка Dove стала прибыльной, только потому что они сняли рекламу с моделями чуть-чуть приближенными к реальной жизни, и это вызвало скандал, но никому до них такое бы и в голову не пришло. Его создатели со зрителем часто взаимодействуют, и с женскими персонажами там сурово расправляются потому что "зрительницы не готовы отдать красавчиков ГГ другим тёткам" 8))) Но он вообще такой... смешной на самом деле 8))

Насчёт Dove, кстати, (сорри автору за офф) совсем недавно прочитала в журнале Гламур, цитата: "Факт, что люди охотнее покупают товары, если рекламирующие из модели на них чем-то походят, известен давно. Ему и была обязана Dove тем не самым прибыльным, как позже выяснили социологи Кальнского университета, заходом с весёлыми девушками в теле (...)". Я тоже раньше думала, что эта реклама была успешной.

24/06/2010 22:38 Прошу прощения, продолжу офф. Я помню, когда только началась эта кампания, у них резко взлетели уровни продаж. Надо будет проверить, чем закончилось дело. Сама кампания на меня впечатления не произвела. А тот факт, что той же компании принадлежит бренд Axe, рекламирующийся... несколько иначе в гендерном отношении, начисто отбивает желание у них что-то покупать.

Я вижу 2 варианта: либо авторы несознательно через собственный male gaze отбирают актеров и актрис и создают соответствующий продукт, либо опираются на заранее изученные вкусы аудитории. Но ведь патриархат в форме андроцентризма -- он же везде, в том числе -- в массах -- в сознании женщин. (я ничего не знаю об этом сериале, поэтому опираюсь на ваши слова о том, что сериал предназначен для женщин) В обоих случаях говорить в теминологии вины мне кажется проблематичным.

24/06/2010 22:18 У меня просто нет уверенности в том, что если бы мужчинам вдруг стали нравиться полные невысокие женщины - женские вкусы тут же бы перестроились. Т.е. в моём представлении уже не всё вращается вокруг того, что считают красивым мужчины.

Например, в одном из соцопросов мне попадалась информация о том, что мужчины не любят сандалии-гладиаторы и штаны афгани на женщинах - но я сейчас вокруг себя вижу едва ли не каждую пятую девушку в такой обуви и одежде.

24/06/2010 23:04 Я, честно говоря, не знаю такой (феминистской) теории, в которой говорится, что символическое различие производят исключительно мужчины. И мужчины, и женщины "делают гендер", исходя из различных диспозиций (гендерной) власти + и те, и другие обладают множеством негендерных идентичностей. Поэтому полное совпадение невозможно, но мэйнстрим направление очевидно.

Я просто не понимаю, почему "мужской мир" тут ни при чём. А что тогда при чём?

Преднамеренно ее никто вообще этому не учит. Принцессы у нас везде. И книжки читать надо только про принцесс. И рисует только одних принцесс и фей. Видимо это все природное какое-то. Вот вырастет и составит аудиторию таких вот сериалов с тщательно отобранными актрисами модельной внешности.

Во-вторых, женщина, которая пишет о себе "он", рекрутирует себя не в мужчину, а в "женщину, которая пишет о себе "он". По-моему, это уже сложившийся архетип. Или вы имеете в виду женщин, которые в сети полностью скрывают свой пол? Но тогда это просто игра в несвойственную роль, возможная только при полной деиндивидуализации (сетевой анонимности). Или вы о трансгендерах?

It all started at 1 PM where the fans who had blue wrist bands on got to go o the show that Deidre, Drake, Ali Sweeney, and Jensen Ackles were at. That was all a Q&A session. Two lucky fans got to play out scenes with Drake and some guy
from Passions. The girl who was with Drake was so lucky because she got to play Marlena and even kissed Drake! It was a very entertaining time because there was many jokes and funny things went on. Like when Drake gave the girl who did a scene with him an Altoid before they started the scene and he made sure to get permission from "Marlena" first.

After the Q&A was over fans got a chance to walk up to the stage and take pictures of everyone was in the very front of everyone and fans tried to push there way forward so I fell onto the stage and Drake along with Jensen Ackles came to my aid and asked if I was OK. They were so sweet! Deidre they came up to me and shook my hand and asked if I was having a good time. Then everyone left and it was time for autographs. All the fans had to go to the assigned area to get them. While waiting in line for them to arrive to the assigned
area Deidre and Drake came walking together holding hands and talking to each other, it looking really nice and I know that the fans loved it although they hardly noticed the fans since they were very into their conversation.

Originally they were only going to stay for an hour, but there were many fans so they decided to wait until they signed every last autograph, so no one was left out. I waited in line for an hour and 15 mins. but it was worth the wait. when I got up to Deidre she was extremely nice and complemented me on my name. We talked for about 15 mins even though security was telling me to move on deidre requested that I stay. She gave me an autograph and even took a picture with me. My friend who took the picture had her finger in the way and Deidre noticed so she told her that and told her to take another. I then moved on to Drake. He remembered me from when I fell on the stage and asked me if I was OK. He had also remembered me from when he first walkedinto the theme park because he was being escorted by security to the arenaand he ran into me. we talked for about 20 mins. Deidre even joined our conversation. It was so easy to talk to them and they were very nice. I got an Autograph from Drake and I asked him to take a picture with me. I didn't even expect what was coming all of a sudden he stands up and puts his arm around me and said to me "you and me babe." I was on cloud 9 for the rest of the day.

Through the day I got the chance to meet Jensen Ackles, Ali Sweeney, Kristian Alfonso, Peter Reckell, Joe Mascolo, and Austin Peck. They were all very nice. I had the best day of my life!

Meeting Deidre and Drake was a dream come true since they are my favorite people on the show. They are really wonderful people and even better looking in person. The camera really does nothing for either of them. And to top it off I was in a commercial a week after that ion which Days thanked Universal Studios and the fans for giving them such a good day. I was shown with Deidre in the arena when she was talking to me and my little sister and my best friend. It only aired that day and I never expected it. It was funny because
everyone who went with me: my Mom, two sisters and best friend were the only ones in the commercial, except for the lady who did a scene with a guy from Passions who said that she had the best mothers day ever. All I know is that I love Deidre and Drake even more after meeting them in person. :-)
There was also a recent fan gathering for the "who's the daddy?"

storyline. It was a rally that was held at universal studio walk on July 21 where I also got to meet Drake again and what do you know he remembered me. My Mom best friend Mary was video taping the whole thing and got the scoop on when they would be arriving (Drake, Kristian Alfonso, Peter Reckell, and Joe Mascolo) and the location. She even made friends with one of the security who allowed her to be there when they arrived by limo. As soon as they walked out she told Drake about her little girl Celina (who is 5) who was a big fan of
his. She also told him about me and that I was wearing a T-shirt with him and me on it (I made a shirt with the picture I took with him from the may 13th event) he said he would make it his priority to talk with me. As soon as I got up there to meet him, he remembered me right off the bat even my name. He asked me if I was having a good time and that he had a great time talking to me the last time he met me. He even me three times twice on
the hand once on the cheek. Then the little girl Celina came up, she is very shy and as soon as he saw her he said "oh so are you my girlfriend who came to visit me today." It was so cute and he made her year.

Before the stars arrived tho there was a lot of activity, they shot promo's for the show, and they selected a few (including me) to interview. They had us say things like: "Who's the daddy?" "Days of our Lives" and chant John or Stephano. They even went as far as to have signs made with John or Stephano on them, ( I got one of each and got them signed by Drake and Joe) and have you hold them up when you chanted. It was lots of fun. Things were given away like: Bubbles with "who's the daddy? Days Of Our Lives" printed on them and antenna balls. It was great to meet Drake again and even greater that he remembered me. He truly cares about his fans and I love him for it.
