"In Dallas, I grew up with a couple of dogs, small dogs," Jensen Ackles unenthusiastically tells BB of his childhood pets. "Actually, my mother is a pug freak." Pugs! What cuddly canine cuteness! Those wrinkly-faced sturdy bow-legged doggies that resemble a cross between Gizmo from Gremlins and an Ewok from Return of the Jedi! Those lil' bundles of shiny beige and black fur that are so adorable you can't help but want to play with them for hours on end! Or can you? According to this Days of Our Lives doll who's played Eric Brady on the NBC soap opera since 1997 it's not that he didn't love his tail-wagging extended family. It's just that, well sometimes middle child Jensen felt that his mom Donna, played favorites with her pups, leaving the now 21 year old actor and his siblings big bro Joshua and younger sister Mackenzie to the doghouse so to speak. "My mom has pug pictures in her room, little towels with pugs on them even calendars with pugs!" Jensen exclaims as he shakes his head in exasperation. "It's ridiculous, and my dad can't stand it. He would just rather drop-kick the pugs across the street. I'm kidding!" He is kidding of course. And actually, after hearing this natural comedian rattle off tale after tale about his mom's pesky pups you'll see that despite his outward resentment, Jensen, too holds a special place in his heart for each of the cuddly cuties. "First there was Pudgy but she died when I was really young. She was old." he winces. "Then there was Ernie. He was around for most of my growing years." What Jensen chooses not to tearfully tell BB until later is that just when he and Ernie started to get close, the poor pooch got hit by a car. "Somebody left the gate open" he says. "Then we got Sluggo and we still have him," he continues adding that this latest pug is as lovable as he is "fat old and snot-slinging." Well while Jensen disdainfully rants about his mom's coddled critters he can only point the finger for so long. After all, this animal lover has his very own shepherd mix, fondly named Dallas, with whom he shares his Los Angeles abode---and you can bet that dog-loving Jensen spoils Dallas with more pampering than Pudgy Ernie or Sluggo ever got! Two brothers, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester, make up all of the recurring roles on the narcoleptic X-Files wannabe Supernatural, where the biggest mystery is what happened to the rest of the cast. The show's shtick is straightforward: Sam and Dean's dad was a successful "hunter" (of spooky things) who one day simply disappeared. Dean, who had been working with his father as a hunter, seeks out Sam, who had given up the family business and gone to college. The two agree to continue their father's monster-extermination duties while at the same time hoping to locate him. The show's individual episodes are almost totally linear, without any B- or C-stories, or any genuine attempt at character development. There are some crumbs scattered throughout, but the writers' inane attempts at injecting humorous sibling rivalry and dime-store philosophizing into the dialogue ring false. Perhaps the duo's first case should have been to investigate whatever demonic possession caused the WB's development execs to greenlight this clunky series in the first place.


Supernatural's shortcomings could have been mitigated were its plotlines authentically scary. Unfortunately, the scripts seem to be composed chiefly of watered-down rehashes of classic weird fiction or popular urban legends. In the episode entitled "The Wendigo," for instance, Algernon Blackwood's outstanding and genuinely frightening short story is transformed into an utterly prosaic monster hunt, while this week's offering features teenagers summoning the vengeful spirit "Bloody Mary" by—you guessed it—repeating her name into a mirror. The first thing to remember about good horror and weird fiction (and the first thing that Supernatural's writers apparently forgot) is: what people don't know or understand is almost always scarier to them than what they do. A big reason Blackwood's story, for example, is so creepy is that the Wendigo itself is never really revealed or explained. The reader's own imagination is left to fill in the "what ifs"—a much more powerful device than any special effect or ominous line of dialogue, because it's automatically tailored to his most powerful fears. In short, a good piece of horror writing lets the reader/viewer/listener do most of the work himself.


Supernatural, though, like a cranky union boss, doesn't want to let viewers do any work at all. Indeed, Sam and Dean arrive at every incident armed with their father's old journal, a miraculous and bottomless source of explanation for every weird phenomenon they encounter. They're also packing a bunch of barely-explained, pseudo-scientific gadgets that, in the tradition of Ghostbusters, instantly detect and deal with ghosties in fabulously silly ways. Dean, for example, has a spook-detector fashioned from an old Walkman (and I can't even get mine to play my old Hank Williams tapes anymore). This failure to leave anything hidden makes each episode more a laborious exegesis of a weird story than an actual weird story—like reading only the footnotes to a volume of H.P. Lovecraft's complete works.


Stylistic problems also abound. For a series that must have a lot of money left over from the acting budget, the production values sure seem low-carb. Entire episodes are shot without leaving the same four or five sets, and Supernatural features some of the lamest special effects I've seen since that time I tried to learn Final Cut Pro. Further, Sam and Dean incessantly refer to each other as "bro" or "my brother"—so newcomers to the series can understand that they're definitely not gay, no sir. This, of course, makes for some contorted dialogue, but this also seems like a bad move strategically: If people are left to wonder whether or not these guys might be gay, it would at least inject some sexual tension into a show that desperately needs any kind of tension it can get.

Oh wow, finding this review 5 years later (after Supernatural became one of the best consistently original, character-driven and layered genre shows of all time) this review makes me laugh as much as it makes me sick. Eat your damn words: No character development? There's only a handful of shows in the last decade that have come anywhere near as close to the mind-numbing amount of development that's happened on this show. Dean and Sam Winchester (Along with a lot of other wonderfully-written and plotted characters) have grown into nuanced and intensely incredible characters. Narcoleptic X-Files rip-off? WOW...Obviously you missed that too: there's no "aliens" or "mass conspiracies" in this show overall it's a driving plot that starts seemingly simple as a couple of guys hunting things that go bump in the night, and it ascends into a war over the well-being of humanity, the rise of Lucifer and the twisty, cursed timeline of tragedies that had to come to pass before he could wreak his havoc on the world. They are currently attempting to thwart the will of demigods, angelic warriors, and the Horsemen of the Apocalypse themselves, all to stop Lucifer from ending the world as we know it. There isn't another show out there like this the combines awesome dialogue, dark humor, gore, and wit in such a way as "Supernatural"â?”it's grown to be as good as the (sometimes overrated) shows that are humored for their quality plots such as "Lost" and it astounds me that you saw none of this forming in those first episodes. If you had actually watched episodes like "Faith", or "Home", or "Salvation" then "Devil's Trap" you'd have known right then the gem that this show was going to turn out to be...

Jensen (perhaps blushing just a bit): Well, I haven’t actually shaved in about seven years. I just use the clippers, I haven’t straight razored my face since the show started so I don’t use aftershave, but I do use some colognes.

At the end of the day "Supernatural" star Jensen Ackles counts his hard knocks, cuts and bruises. If he finds some new ones, he knows he's had a productive day on the set.

"I'll be getting into the shower and all of a sudden it will be like, 'Whoa!' I'll find a new cut or a bump or a bruise," the 28-year-old Texas-born actor says. "I'll feel a cut on my elbow and think, 'Oh, nice!'"

The action-packed "Supernatural" (9 p.m., ET/PT Thursdays, the WB) has been a workout for Ackles and his co-star Jared Padalecki following its debut last September.

Ackles isn't totally a stranger to such antics. Growing up near Dallas, he was a high school athlete before deciding he wanted to move to Los Angeles and be an actor.

His first major break came with "Dawson's Creek," though he was a standout regular on "Smallville." During the 2004-2005 season, he was Jason Teague, a thorn in the side of Clark Kent's affections for Lana Lang.

Though the role lasted one season, it was enough to attract the eye of WB executives. They knew Ackles had carved a strong fan base, making him a natural to lead a new series.

To satisfy the WB's young fan base, most of the action on "Supernatural" is left up to Ackles and Padalecki.

They play the brothers Winchester _ the sensible Sam (Padalecki) and the rugged Dean (Ackles) _ who are on an extended road trip. Along the way, they encounter spookiness.

Each week, they face urban legends such as the Woman in White, Bloody Mary or the Man with the Hook Hand.

"I've never been one to be spooked out," he says, "but the more I work on this show the more I can lean toward (supernatural) arguments."

The mysteries of each week's episodes usually bring the brothers one step closer to answering questions about the death of their mother.

Mysteries aside, it's the physicality of "Supernatural" that Ackles likes getting into.

"A couple of days ago I had to dive into a pile of crates with nails and splinters and the whole thing," he says. "I dove head first into it. I only had a backpack."

In another episode, Ackles had to stay underwater while also supporting the weight of a 10-year-old actor. "I don't know if you have ever been held underwater against your will, but it's a very unsettling feeling," he says.

"To hold your breath long enough to get the camera rolling, it was very taxing mentally. I had the life of a 10-year-old on me."

Stunt doubles are used, but Ackles wants to do the job himself when possible.

All this kind of action represents a good day at work for him.

"It's just another day at the office, my friend," he says.

I'm growing a little worried about Dean. At first, his seemingly juvenile obsession with porn and sex was amusing, a harmless little hobby. But lately, it's taking on a disturbing new tone.

In last night's episode of Supernatural, Dean proudly boasted that three of the female cheerleaders at the high school they were investigating were legal. If he discovered this through some normal method, it might be OK, but since he was snooping in the principal's office for dead kids, it means he actively chose to seek out the ages of the cheerleaders. It was a funny line, but it's also kind of gross.

If that's not enough, the flashbacks also let us know that, even in high school, he was calling his female teachers “sugar” and hooking up with multiple girls in the janitor's closet. I think it's about time someone sat him down and had an intervention.

Dean Winchester is a sexaholic. He loves sex and porn, thinking about sex and porn, and talking about sex and porn. If you had to list Dean's three favorite things in the world, two of them would be breasts.

Next week, it looks like Dean's sex drive will go into overdrive when Supernatural brings on sexy siren strippers who convince men to do their bidding. Hopefully a bad sexual encounter with strippers will be just what the doctor ordered to calm down Dean's libido.

Dean Winchester is a sexaholic. He loves sex and porn, thinking about sex and porn, and talking about sex and porn. If you had to list Dean’s three favorite things in the world, two of them would be breasts.

My bigger question is whether this is the writers’ little joke, or is it a reflection of what Jensen Ackles brings to the role? That may sound silly, but on another sci-fi series, The X-Files, Fox Mulder had a bit of a porn obsession. As we now know, David Duchovny went on to star in Californication and checked himself into rehab for sex addiction.

Not only did he play a sex addict on TV, but he really was one. I’m not saying Jensen is necessarily like his character in this respect, but Dean’s porn and sex obsession is becoming a bit over the top. At least we know he draws the line somewhere: at gay S&M sex.

Next week, it looks like Dean’s sex drive will go into overdrive when Supernatural brings on sexy siren strippers who convince men to do their bidding. Hopefully a bad sexual encounter with strippers will be just what the doctor ordered to calm down Dean’s libido.

I think thats a bit much...I mean if you analyze him as a person at least the way I do, he does all of that, sex and porn because that can be considered normal for him. Sex is pretty much normal and from what I saw from the episode, I think its something that helps him cope with his other emotions. I don't necessarily think he is a sex addict but yeah he likes sex and porn but pratically every guy likes that. The whole cheerleader thing, yeah maybe that was a little wrong but lets put it this way, if he did hit on them well then its their fault to decide to persue him as well and no the answer is not no they don't know any better because they are 18 probably? So they should already know what is right and wrong.

This is Dean's nature. He's always been going out on one night stands and meeting up girls in bars, why would we stop and need to think about this now? I agree with LoveKripke, and I think it helps him cope with his other emotions too. He's just that type of guy, and we have to deal with it because I honestly think it's part of his charm. I LOVED the whole "I've been rehymenated" speech in Monster Movie, and it's something about him that we like. I don't know if you have done this article because of next week's episode, but whatever the case maybe he his a sex addict, but at least he's not always drunk and addicted on drugs...

Wow, what a steaming heap of unprofessional garbage............ Firstly................ The cheerleader joke? Just that. A JOKE. Anyone who honestly believes for a second that Dean would actually bother to pursue a high school cheerleader obviously hasn't taken the time to understand Dean's character or his interactions with women............ Secondly, calling his teacher sugar was also a JOKE. Even if you were foolish enough to believe that he'd want to go after high school cheerleaders you surely wouldn't for a second believe that he would be genuinely physically attracted to that teacher?................. Thirdly, there was a grand total of TWO girls. One was kind of a girlfriend, the other a random hook-up. *GASP!* Dean cheated on his girlfriend of less than a month! Especially when they're gorgeous and they know how to put that fact to good use.................. Fifthly, okay. So you perceive Dean as some !$#!# addict and sexaholic. More fool you. But to imply that Dean's apparently 'sexaholic' attitude is a reflection on Jensen's personality would be utterly laughable if it wasn't so disgracefully insulting.................. If you're not saying that Jensen is not necessarily like his character in the respect of being a so-called sexaholic, then why in Gods name did you even suggest it in the first place???................................ wow, take it easy there sparky, it was just a joke, and also just a show. Looks like someone needs to remember that dean winchester in just a character, no matter how many millions of girls wish he was wasnt. *raises hand* "guilty as charged!" =) Anyway...it was also pretty stupid of them to even bring up jensen as a reason dean could be a "sex addict". I mean what the heck?

This is irresponsible journalism. Very irresponsible. Say whatever you want about Dean Winchester, he's a character and his career can't be hurt by what you say. However, don't say something about Jensen Ackles in an article that you wouldn't say to him while looking him in the eye. That part of the article was incredibly inappropriate.

I think this article was both crude and completely disrepectful of Jensen Ackles. This episode had plenty of other topics you could have chosen to talk about. High school? Shorts and whistles? Sam's turmoil over his life? Sam has had sex with a demon. I'd hate to think what that makes Jared Padalecki in your world. It would do you good to be more respectful to both the actors and the fans.

I have to a point always agreed to with a lot of these articles but this is just low. I thought that it was reputable site where I enjoyed to read the articles posted but then, you have to slam Jensen? Your thought of Jensen being a sex addict is just a pure guessing game. His character enjoys sex. So the writers might be drawing a habit of his. I'm not saying that Jensen is a angel so there's absolutely no way that he could do that but you have no proof to throw an accusation like that. This is deformation. Jensen could actually take action over this. I would expect this kind of articles from a tabloid not here.

As for Dean. Just because he said something about some cheerleaders doesn't mean that he will start going after them. And what he said to his teacher 12 years ago, was Dean being his smartass self. Dean has a lot of things going through his head wheter he shows it or not. And right now he's taking extreme measures to show Sam that he is. But if you wanna have an opinion about a fictional character that's fine. There's no need to bring the actor into it. Ok, now I'm good.

What a blatant attempt to get attention, and what POOR journalism. Calling out a person for their character's traits? Isn't that something that you're taught NOT to do as an entertainment journalist? If actors took on the traits of the characters they played, everyone in Hollywood would be behind bars! What about Joey on Friends -- he loved sex and women -- Matt LeBlanc, as far as I know, has shown no symptoms of being a sex addict. Pacey on Dawson's Creek lost his virginity to his teacher - does Joshua Jackson display these characteristics? Neil Patrick Harris on How I Met Your Mother -- he's openly gay, but a womanizer on the show! Maybe senior writers need to THINK about what they're saying before they report on a topic.

Uhm...sorry, but is this line about the legal cheerleaders and the janitor closet the only thing you remember after watching the episode? Usually I like to read your articles but this one...what about the rest of the episode? I admit the cheerleader line was a little creepy but still funny and probably not that meaningful... besides all that flirting and the casual sex is about all the affection Dean gets, it's his piece of normal life. For Sam it's school. Also, shouldn't you be able to tell apart the character and the actor and why do you care about Dean's and Jensen's sex life anyway?

What the hell? Now you are insulting JENSEN? What is your problem Buddy TV? First off how is Dean sex obsessed or porn obsessed? I mean seriously he's a hot guy do you really think Dean would have trouble having sex when he wants it? He has it less than your average married man does so I can't see the problem, unless faithful married men who average sex 2 or 3 times a week are sex addicts too? And let's face it "The Internet is for Porn" as the song goes, lots of guys look it up. Have we forgotten Sam watching the porn channel in the motel room in Season 2? Secondly it's CLEARLY the writers who think it's funny to have Dean commenting on teenage girls because Dean NEVER did it before this season. Blame the writers, not Jensen. He can't help it if they have juvenile sense of humor and don't understand a whit about Dean's characterization. For 3 seasons Dean was flirty(not sleazy) with women of appropriate age and never seemed to pay any attention to teenage girls. It's

Also I want to agree aerie below. I hope Kripke sees this and realizes what letting writers like Dabb write Dean like a two bit cliche brings on the head of an actor who has done nothing but work hard for the show. If it wasn't for the fact that it would bring you more attention than you deserved I'd hope you'd get sued but you deserve to fade into obscurity.

I think this is a bit to harsh, he is a good guy and normal ppl have a healthy relationship but Dean not so much, and i think it's kinda wrong for u to assume that Jensen has this problem....

You know what articles like this do? Then generate a LOT of traffic for this website. Could also be that the writer also believes what he is writing. But I can't confirm or deny that. And, by posting, I am also feeding into this sillyness. I bet you anything, if you look back on all the posts like this, you'll find they are the ones with the most replies. So I'll close with - it's just a TV show about fictional characters. It's supposed to be entertainment. Choosing to take it as a serious reflection on "real" life is something anyone is free to do (freedom of speech and all that) but doesn't mean that was the intent of the show (encompassing all cast and crew) or that viewers (such as our senior writier here) assumpions are correct.

I'm not rising to the bait this time. I got angry about the debate about Sam being a rapist but c'mon!!!! Dean's always been this way and perved on the cheerleader in The Great Pumpkin. Is it ok to do that cos she was "evil". This is ridiculous...LOL he likes his women cheap and nasty but when he does get down to it he picks a) a black activist/journalist and b) an ANGEL!!!!! If that's not proof he does it just to stir things up with his little bro then I don't know what is! He's a protector of women who likes his one liners...so he has the odd one nighter but Dean's a good man deep down and everyone knows that!!! In response to the comments about Jensen? Пришло в голову:

Кастиэль - ангел, спасающий тело.
Сперва спас тело для Дина, затем - для Джимми Новака, после наступил черёд новакова чада...
В общем, помнится, ангел спасал тела Бобби и Сэма. Ангелы вообще хорошо знают, как пользовать "сосуды", "батарейки", то бишь души к ним, но спасают именно тела. Душа остаётся загадкой.
