Sci-Fi Blast From The Past - Jensen Ackles (Dark Angel)

Welcome to "Sci-Fi Blast From The Past," a new daily post in which I'll be sharing short excepts from the many celebrity interviews I've done over the years. Hope you enjoy it. First up, Supernatural's Jensen Ackles talks about his guest-starring role of Max's (Jessica Alba) genetically engineered brother Ben in the Dark Angel episode Pollo Loco. This eventually led to the actor's regular role of Alec McDowell, a genetically enhanced transgenic super-solider in the show's second season.

“I had a rather quick audition for Ben,” says Ackles. “In fact, I only read once for the show’s producers, which was unusual. Normally, you go through a far more lengthy process. However, I think they were running behind schedule insofar as casting the character. They were seeing just a select few actors and I happened to be one of them. I guess I was what they were looking for because within four days I was on a plane to Vancouver to start filming.

“Ben was mentally messed up,” continues the actor. “He was a genetic soldier who was trained to kill by Manticore. Ben eventually gained his freedom and ended up in the real world. Unfortunately, after a few years he suddenly flipped out. All his training came back to him and he started acting as if he was back in the military. He began hunting down innocent civilians and killing them. It was like a game to him; in Ben’s mind, this was what he was born to do.

“He was a neat individual to play. I was up in Vancouver for a little over two-and-a-half weeks. It was a pretty complicated episode to film because there was a lot to it. The scenes in which Ben is hunting his victims down were shot up in the mountains and the forests around the city. It was March, so it was pretty wet and chilly when we were on-location. Overall, though, I had an amazing time.”

Jensen was great as Ben, he was already showing signs of the versatility and depth he's known for today, after playing the complex Dean Winchester on Supernatural for the last 6 years. Ben was scary but he was also sympathetic, it was hard not to feel sorry for this poor guy, for whom freedom didn't set him free but instead drove him mad.

It is funny that Ackles viewed it as such a quick and simple casting process because, little did he know at the time, it wasn't.

One of the episode's writers, Doris Egan(of House), has posted about how Jensen almost didn't get the part because one of the male producers, who had had nothing to do with the audition process, looked at a photo of Jensen and almost dismissed out of hand as being "too good looking"(on a show where slender gorgeous Jessica Alba was playing a trained super soldier? Jealousy much LOL) and believing that because it happened to be all women doing the casting for the episode JA had somehow hypnotized them with his looks(again, on a show where gorgeous slender, relatively UNEXPERIENCED Jessica Alba was playing a trained super soldier. Chauvinistic much?).

Of course the same producer, after Jensen had done such a terrific job at playing Ben, was ready to cast him for a regular role the next season, as a very different character(Alec who was more of a charming rogue trained to kill than a psychopathic serial killer) without even knowing whether he could play comedy or not. Lucky for him, Ackles is great at it and Alec became something of a break out character, if a show on the verge cancellation can have such a thing.

The other interesting thing is that now Ackles has spent most of the last 9 years acting in Vancouver(Dark Angel, Smallville, Devour(film) and Supernatural), whereas at the time of this interview it was clearly a novelty for him.

Whatever it is that makes Texas special, there’s no denying that it’s a one-of-a-kind place with a spirit all its own. Just one visit and you’ll be hooked.



Dallas


Cosmopolitan and trendy, fun and funky, this top tourist destination in Texas is a shopper’s paradise, a foodie’s delight, and an urbanite’s oasis.


While Dallas is a modern kind of place, that doesn’t mean it has no past. For an in-depth retrospective of a national icon, visit The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza (www.jfk.org). There you’ll get a comprehensive look at the life and career of John F. Kennedy from the sixth floor where his assassin fired the fatal shots. Another can’t-miss museum is the Dallas Museum of Art (www.dallasmuseumofart.org), which features pieces from masters like Renoir, Van Gogh, and Monet, as well as Egyptian art, Oriental and European rugs, antique glass, and much more. And it isn’t just the beautiful people you’ll see -- step out onto the clear deck, suspended 33 floors above the ground below, and check out Big D’s distinctive cityscape. If your line dancing and do-si-do skills aren’t quite up to par, no worries -- there are free dance lessons on Saturday evenings to prepare you for a night of boot scootin’ boogying. And don’t forget your cowboy hat: You’ll need it to hang onto when you take a spin on the famous mechanical bull.

After a late night out on the town, retail therapy is just what you need. For a truly eclectic shopping experience, head to Bishop Arts District (www.bishopartsdistrict.com), which has a little of everything -- just a few of the attractions include, on the shopping front, a soda gallery with a retro candy selection, a gift shop, and a lifestyle boutique; for dining, a 1950s diner and a tapas bar; and a day spa and yoga studio for a little R&R. If stylish handbags at super-affordable prices are your kryptonite, Sam Moon (www.sammoon.com) will be your biggest weakness. After scooping up some purses for way less than you’d pay anywhere else, don’t miss the walls of jewelry, bins of hair accessories, and stacks of luggage.

With the right accessories in hand, you’ll be ready for a nice dinner at Dallas’s first gastropub, Social House (214-521-7500), which opened earlier this year in the trendy West Village. The underground bar features a fireplace and a warm ambience, while the menu showcases mini burgers, short rib grilled cheese sandwiches, and more than 20 beers on tap. For a lower-key meal and a stack of delicious cheddar fries either plain or piled high with bacon, chives, and jalapenos, check out one of Snuffer’s Restaurant & Bar’s (www.snuffers.com) eight locations in the DFW area.



Fort Worth

Fort Worth offers something everyone can enjoy. Shopping reigns supreme at Sundance Square, while a trip to the Stockyards is essential in order to appreciate the city’s Western roots as a home on the range.


No visit to the city is complete without a trip to Billy Bob’s Texas (www.billybobstexas.com), the world’s largest honky tonk. Catch real bull riding on Friday and Saturday nights, along with concerts from some of country’s biggest acts. And this goes without saying, but the barbecue is unbeatable, so dig in and have some brisket, turkey, ribs, ham, chicken, homemade potato salad, and fresh coleslaw. In keeping with the country theme, the White Elephant Saloon (www.whiteelephantsaloon.com) is the place to go for authentic Wild West nightlife. A collection of cowboy hats on the wall and live music and dancing seven nights a week set the scene for this tried-and-true bar, once a watering hole for cowboys who spent their days wrangling cattle.

But cowboys weren’t the only ones to make their mark on this town. The women deserve some recognition, too, and they get it at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame (www.cowgirl.net), the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to the courageous females of the American West. Here, kids will love taking a simulated ride on a bucking bronco, which is mixed with footage of an old-time rodeo and then turned into a movie you can see on-screen.

The National Cowgirl Museum is just one part of the Fort Worth Cultural District, which also houses the Amon Carter Museum (www.cartermuseum.org), the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History (www.fwmuseum.org), the Kimbell Art Museum (www.kimbellart.org), and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (www.themodern.org), all worth a visit to take in their diverse collections.

Looking for a quaint place to stay? The Ashton Hotel (www.theashtonhotel.com) is the city’s only small luxury hotel. With a location near Sundance Square and Bass Performance Hall, it makes the perfect place to serve as headquarters for your trip to Cowtown. Stop by the on-site Café Ashton for a well-reviewed meal of breakfast, lunch, or dinner (food critics adore this spot), or settle in for afternoon tea with scones, petit fours, and chocolate truffles.

For a hotel experience that the young’uns will enjoy, the recently opened Great Wolf Lodge (www.greatwolf.com), located near Fort Worth in Grapevine, Texas, already has kids howling with delight. The family-friendly all-suite resort includes an 80,000-square-foot indoor water park and an 84,000-square-foot outdoor park, available to resort guests only. And you know what that means -- none of the long lines traditionally found at big water parks. If that’s not enough to smile about, while the kids slide the day away in the North Woods–themed water paradise, parents will enjoy the adult spa.



Austin


The Live Music Capital of the World, Austin is known for its cool college town vibe and sophisticated, yet unpretentious atmosphere. The heart of the city is found on Sixth Street, where live entertainment venues, funky boutiques, casual coffee shops, nighttime hot spots, and art galleries abound. Festivals take place here year-round; some of the best-known ones are South by Southwest and celebrations for Halloween and Mardi Gras.


While Austinites like to party, nature also figures prominently into the scene. Just a 30-minute drive from the city is an oasis worth making the short trek for. Popular with the locals, Hamilton Pool (512-264-2740) has 230-plus acres encompassing a 50-foot waterfall, a swimming hole, nature trails, rare plant species (like the chatterbox orchid), and plenty of birds.

But it’s not just outdoor natural wonders that abound -- outdoor restaurants are popular, too. Perched high above Lake Travis, Oasis (www.oasis-austin.com) offers spectacular views of the Hill Country. More than 40 decks are open on the weekends, and they’re all crowded at dusk as people clamor to see the breathtaking sunset view. For a quintessential Austin dining experience, Freddie’s (www.freddiesplaceaustin.com) has comfort food like chicken fried steak and stuffed meatloaf, served under a canopy of oak trees. Try your hand at pitching washers, a lawn game the restaurant is known for hosting.

If you want a little music with your food, that’s doable, too. At Stubb’s Bar-B-Q (www.stubbsaustin.com), you can get a heaping helping of some down-home hickory-smoked barbecue and good music from local and national acts. Don’t miss Sunday Gospel Brunch, a live music and buffet extravaganza popular with people of all ages and complete with Southern-style grits, migas, fried catfish, brisket, and make-your-own Bloody Marys.

For the best in fashion from up-and-coming designers, Shiki (www.shikistyle.com) is the place to shop. Trendy and sophisticated yet still laid-back (reminiscent of the city itself), the store is where fashionistas go to scoop up finds that won’t be on every fashion-forward woman in town.

After all that excitement, for a relaxing place to unwind in Texas’s capital, Carrington’s Bluff Bed and Breakfast (www.carringtonsbluff.com) is a crowdpleaser. But don’t worry -- there are no crowds here. The eight-room 1877 English country house (there’s a Main House and a Writers’ Cottage) overlooking a bluff provides all the serenity you could want, yet is close enough to downtown for a quick trip into the city. And if you’re looking for a midnight treat, both open kitchens are stocked with complimentary Blue Bell ice cream (if you’re from out of state, know that Texans take their Blue Bell seriously).



San Antonio

Deep in the heart of Texas you’ll find San Antonio, where you can remember the Alamo, stroll the renowned River Walk, and eat some darn good Tex-Mex.


Join the 2.5 million-plus people a year who visit the Alamo (www.thealamo.org), San Antonio’s most famous attraction. The mission and fortress, now a museum, was the site of the Battle of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution. Stroll the gardens, take in the Wall of History, watch a film on the Alamo’s 300-year history, and see artifacts from the men who made their last stand there.

If snuggling up to Shamu is on your to-do list, then a stop at SeaWorld San Antonio (www.seaworld.com/sanantonio), the world’s largest marine life adventure park, is in order. Not only can you see sharks, seals, sting rays and sea lions, but you can also splash around in Lost Lagoon, the on-site water park; interact with a group of playful bottlenose dolphins; and take a spin on some white-knuckle thrill rides. Other water fun can be had at Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort (www.schlitterbahn.com/nb) in nearby New Braunfels. The park is consistently named the best in the country, and it’s no wonder why -- 65 acres beckon, with three miles of tubing, seven children’s water playgrounds, 17 water slides, the world’s first surfing machine, and three uphill water coasters. Plus, friendly policies like free parking, inner tubes, and life jackets, and guests being allowed to carry in their own food, make a trip to Schlitterbahn (that’s German for “slippery road”) all the more enjoyable.

Dry off and head to San Antonio’s first neighborhood, La Villita Historic Arts Village (www.lavillita.com), a site that was originally a settlement for Spanish soldiers and now features shopping, dining, and art galleries. Grab a bite to eat or sip a cocktail at one of four restaurants, then pick up some handcrafted goods from one of the area’s many artisans.

Can’t get enough of the camaraderie that comes with screaming at big-screen TVs with other sports fans? Tiffany Billiards (www.tbilliards.com) is the place to be for any big game or fight; plus it has an extensive sports memorabilia collection, live music most nights, and, of course, tons of pool tables. If you’re a beer connoisseur, check out Flying Saucer (www.beerknurd.com), where you can sample dozens of brews. If satisfying your sweet tooth is what you’re after, try family-owned Nadler’s Bakery and Delicatessen (www.nadlers.com). With the crowd-pleasing strawberry whipped cream cake, meringue kisses, and specialty breads, it’s no wonder Nadler’s is a local favorite.

For a romantic getaway La Mansion del Rio (www.omnihotels.com), situated along the River Walk, has a helpful staff, prime location, beautiful Spanish colonial architecture, and an acclaimed on-site restaurant, Las Canarias. This is the perfect place to stay for a getaway with your amante.



Houston

The country’s fourth-largest city and the largest city in Texas has more than 2 million residents, and it’s easy to see why people flock to Houston -- it’s culturally diverse (90 languages are spoken throughout the area) and packed with activities, from great museums (there are 15 institutions in the Museum District) to top-flight golf (165-plus courses call the Bayou City home).


Try out one of those courses by spending a day on the links at Lake Windcrest Golf Club (www.lakewindcrestgolf.com), an 18-hole course with unrestricted access to the public and great prices. The fairways are generous, the greens plenty green, and the holes challenging enough for all skill levels. If you’re in more of a spectator mood, at state-of- the-art Sam Houston Race Park (www.shrp.com), the nation’s fastest-growing race track, you can catch live horse racing, watch music performances during the summer on weekend evenings, and grab a bite to eat at one of two restaurants and eight bars.

Houston is known as Space City due to NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (“Houston” was the first word Neil Armstrong spoke when he landed on the moon), so it’s only fitting that a trip includes a drop-in at Space Center Houston (www.spacecenter.org), where you can simulate blasting off into space (with rocket boosters, billowing exhaust, and all), explore an exhibit of spacesuits, and discover what life is like for astronauts in a microgravity environment.

When you come back down to earth and are ready to walk instead of fly, a little shopping may be just what you need to keep you grounded. Those looking for the best steals would be wise to wheel and deal at Traders Village Houston (www.tradersvillage.com), an open-air market held each weekend, housing 2,500 dealers on more than 105 acres. Festivals and special events take place throughout the year, so there’s always something more to do than just shop (although here, you may need all day for treasure hunting).

After all that bargain hunting, relax and savour something sweet at Sugarbaby’s Cupcake Boutique (www.ilovesugarbabys.com). The name says it all -- this place has every cupcake your taste buds could crave. Try an old standby like Va-Va-Vanilla, vanilla bean cake with your choice of traditional vanilla or chocolate buttercream, or go out on a limb with the mouthwatering Chocolate Covered Strawberry, chocolate cake filled with strawberry preserves, topped with strawberry buttercream and dipped in dark chocolate, or Criss Cross Applesauce, light applesauce spice cake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting.

If you need something a little more substantial than a cupcake, try eating at the Grove (www.thegrovehouston.com), an urban dweller’s paradise located in Discovery Green (www.discoverygreen.com), a 12-acre park with a lake, interactive fountains, Wi-Fi access, an amphitheater, indoor and outdoor reading areas, and much more. The Grove features chic décor and serves up rustic American cuisine like seared ahi tuna with Mississippi grits, charcoal-grilled ribeye, and braised Long Island duck legs.

After a busy day in H-Town, crash at Hotel Granduca (www.granducahouston.com), a Tuscan-themed hotel in the Uptown/Galleria area. Here, you’re in for impeccable service and the feel of being transported to old-world Italy. I was scanning twitter for reports of the Supernatural Convention a while back and came across the brand new twitter of actor, Kim Rhodes. Kim plays Sheriff Jody Mills on “Supernatural” and I was intrigued. The buzz on twitter was that Kim was a great addition to the convention guest list and she was as funny as she was charming.

Turns out, those tweeters were right.

I hit the follow button and became Kim’s first follower on twitter. She was quick to thank me for that and as she tried to figure out twitter I watched her follower count grow steadily. I have a feeling, that once people have met Kim, they don’t forget her.

Sheriff Mills is a great character on “Supernatural”. I have to admit, I went to this interview hoping that I would find Kim to be as approachable as the character she plays. I interviewed a woman who is charming, hilarious, honest, blunt, warm and one of the most animated people I’ve met in a very long time.

AM: I wanted to ask you about being a female character on a show where female characters get either blown away or the fans hate them.

KIM: That’s so funny! I can’t wait for my death because I know it’s inevitable…

AM: everyone dies on supernatural

KIM: well, one of the crew joked – “that’s how you know we like you, if we kill you because then you know you’re gonna come back.” So yeah, it’s nice – on a regular show if you die you can pretty much kiss your paycheck goodbye. Here, it doesn’t really mean anything other than a little blip in your character’s road.

AM: So why do you think people like your character?

KIM: You know, I think the most primal reason is because I’m not attached to Sam or Dean. I am no competition. I also think that there’s no guile to the character. I mean, she’s really, in kind of a way – a female, the flip side of the Bobby Singer coin. She’s just straight forward and honest and doing her job to the best of her ability and there isn’t any subterfuge. I think a lot of women crave seeing a genuinely strong, not a fake “I’m gonna go kick somebody in the face ‘cause I can” strength. Just genuine, I’m- doin’-my-job and I’m gonna get through and I’m a fuckin’ survivor.

And I have a gun.

AM: And you know how to use it – which you do. I saw on IMDB that you’re trained in hand to hand…

KIM: …hand to hand, quarterstaff, rapier and dagger.

AM: What’s up with that?

KIM: It was grad school. They made me. I went to Temple and part of the Masters training program is stage combat so we all had to, at least, take our certification test. And God Love ‘em, even though I dropped my quarterstaff in the middle of it, I guess since I didn’t actually get hit in the face picking it up. I passed.

AM: That training must be unusual. That’s not something that everybody does, is it?

KIM: It’s a stage thing; I come from a stage background.

AM: I saw you’d done a lot of Shakespeare…

KIM: And that was what I wanted to do when I grew up. And unfortunately, ya can’t make any money doing that. That’s kind of a Shakespeare thing. If you’re gonna play Joan of Arc you’ve gotta know how to hold a broadsword.

And, so much of what’s done through editing and effects in television and film you can’t fake on stage. You’ve gotta know how to make it look like you hit the person in the face or you reacted. Somebody doesn’t get to sneak a pad in when you’re on stage so you need to know how to fall and how to take it. So… that’s actually come in handy a few times.

Actually, I did a lot of “finding major muscle groups and make sure they take the brunt” filming (Supernatural this week.)

AM: I saw Kenneth Branagh do Henry V live…

KIM: OOohh I played Lady Elise in Wisconsin. Yes! 78 year old nun! Very, very, very fun. That’s the other thing you can get away with on stage. On stage you can play, ‘cause, especially in a rep company. I was playing Viola, and Kate Hardcastle and then they said “You’ve gotta be in a 3rd play”. So they threw me in this time little supporting role in Henry which was awesome.

I said I’d like to play it like this, since the only parts of my body that were showing was (was my face) and my hands on stage you can do enough make-up and move your body in such a way that you can sell being an austere 78 year old nun.

AM: Would you still go that theater route if you could?

KIM: If I could. If it would pay the bills, absolutely I would. A few years ago, before I did the Disney channel, I was in Ashland at the Shakespeare festival and I got to do “Midsummer (Night’s Dream)”. Yeah, I would do that forever if I could.

AM: So do you have other upcoming projects?

KIM: “Beethoven’s Christmas Adventure”, shot in Winnipeg in February and March, but it’s coming out in, I think, November. And, Bob Picardo is in it. Munro Chambers who does a show called Degrassi – he plays my son. And Curtis Armstrong – I hesitate to say this and God, if he sees this I hope it’s not an insult but “Booger” from “Revenge of the Nerds”. But, you know, people go “oh my God, he’s brilliant! He’s everywhere! I love him.”

And Kyle Massey from “Cory In The House” and “Dancing with The Stars”- yeah, it was a great group.

AM: So there’s nothing you can say about filming “Supernatural” is there? Other than what we know from the picture Guy Bee posted letting us in on the location.

KIM: You know the interesting thing is – this is the third time I’ve been there. There are probably things that the Executive Producers could tell you, or that Jared and Jensen could tell you that Jim could tell you. But I am so tenuous and so terrified of pissing anybody off so I’m like “oh no no no, I’m not taking pics of anything and if I do I’m going to grossly modify them.” I am not going to risk that.

So I can tell you I don’t fire a gun in this episode.

AM: Excellent. Belly dancing?

KIM: You know what? I still have a couple days left on this show, I will pitch it! There may be the need.

AM: You’re back as Sheriff Mills right?

KIM: I’m still me and I’m still in interaction with Bobby.

AM: Which is an interesting relationship, because like you said – you have a lot in common but you’re on opposite sides of the legal fence which is an interesting push and pull.

KIM: Well, in the last episode… I just showed up to do a favor for him that would get me in a shitload of trouble but I did it anyway. Jensen was directing that episode and I am shameless so I was taking moments to kind of play a curious attraction. I was playing this – because otherwise why would you do something that’s gonna completely tank the only thing you have left in life. ‘Cause your family is gone, your son died twice – that sucks – and the second time because he ate your husband’s intestines. The only thing you have left is your career.

And so – in order to do something that’ll torpedo everything you have left it’s gotta be more than “ahhh ok what the heck, you’re a nice guy.” So I was playing this reluctant attraction but in the edit, they cut all the moments we had.

Jensen even said “I like what you’re doing. You have this moment here where you’ve got this sweet vulnerable little smile and then this asshole line comes out of your mouth” but in the edit they shaved it all. But, quite frankly, I’m not the point of the story.

But, Jim was like, I don’t care let’s just keep playin’ it. That’s one of the amazing things about the regulars on this show. For me to come in and be like “I have an idea and it kind of involves your character…” There’s only been one other time in my life I can think of when the person in question was like “great idea” let’s play.

AM: We keep hearing that the Supernatural cast and grew are great … are they really that great? Is it that comfortable a set?

KIM: Well, now yesterday, there were no regulars on the set. And, just the crew itself is supportive and fun and funny and I think it’s also respectful of the people and the material.

Guy (Bee, Director) and I were talking about this. So many people could be rolling their eyes and winking at the camera but there’s such an honest love and commitment to the story-telling that it also affects the crew and the work energy and the work ethic.

And then, on top of it, you have – it goes from the top down. Jared and Jensen. My very first scene every with them was the burning of everyone I knew on a funeral pyre like, “Hey welcome to set”. And they were kinda dinkin’ around and ridin’ their motorcycles and throwing footballs and I was like “I’m screwed, ‘cause I’m on my own.” I’d just worked with two precocious boys for three years and five minutes before it came time to shoot my coverage they both – it was like they took off their gloves and just went boom. And Jared actually looked at me and went, “What do you need?” They were there for my coverage…

AM: They don’t have to be there?

KIM: They don’t even have to show up. And not only were they there they were giving full performance level interaction. They were so – I think that-

We had a brief interlude at this point in the interview because there was a ball game on the big screen TV and a brawl has busted out. Kim claimed excitedly that the Phillies were evil and, therefore, she had to watch the ruckus before continuing.

KIM: (Jared and Jensen) are just good generous guys. That’s what you hope for.

AM: I wondered too – it’s a pretty dedicated fan base.

KIM: This is the first time in my life, and I’ve shot in front of a Live studio. It was always kind of them and us. Theatre is all “us”. Audience and onstage we’re creating this moment. This was the first time I saw a TV fan base as we are all “us”. There are different roles within that “us” but it’s really perfected and honored the art of the audience being integral to the art.

Nobody is a brilliant actor in their shower. They might think they are but communication is a two way process and it’s really hard to remember that when you never come in contact with your audience. And it’s really easy for an actor to start thinking it really is all about them, when in fact, we are the servants. We are the most primal, base, really it’s all about you? Let’s see how well you do without electricity. Yeah – all about you – “oh! You’re naked ‘cause wardrobe didn’t show today!!” Not all about you.

And Again, not all about you – tree fallin’ in a forest and there’s nobody there to listen your voice is pointless. So this is a really great symbiotic relationship and communal creation of a show. So I think that’s also why my guess, is why it’s such a passionate fan base. Because people understand that they’re being honored as part of the process and not just passive observers.

AM: I used to like Star Trek but we didn’t want to interview everyone on the show – we just wanted to interview Captain Kirk… and I think it was Jared at a convention this summer who said he consider this a supernatural family. The fans, the actors, the guest stars, the cast, the crew – everything.

KIM: Colin, Gabe, Matt and Richard who were at the NJ con were the guys that kind of crossed over that were my introduction to (fandom). Gabe was the one who got me on twitter. He was like “c’mon, join!” I was terrified and he was like “that’s because you need to jump in! Play!”

I kept expecting fans to be like “we’ve been cheated! It’s just you! You suck!” Seriously, I still was like – “You know who I am, right? Do you think I’m someone else? I’m really confused as to why you like me.” But it is! It’s a very committed interaction! It’s awesome.

AM: I’ve spoken to people to people online and I know you’re right about your character. She’s popular because she’s been through the ringer and she’s still standing at the other end.

KIM: Okay, so I think I’m flattering myself and my character to say this so I’m prefacing by saying I attempt humility. I think she’s relatable. There aren’t a lot of characters on this show – where the audience can go “there I am.” Not all of us are demons, or succubae. Quite frankly I’m not at the age where I can look at a 22 year old hottie patottie and go “oh yeah she completely represents my demographic!” Not so much. Yeah.

And also, being good-hearted. That’s something we all kind of relate to.

There are some really interesting female characters on there. Girls! Girls! Yay Girls!!

AM: And you have a lot of “Another World” fans!

KIM: I was Grant’s last wife. I did not kill him although some people think I did. I did shoot him, but I didn’t hit anything vital. The character was a pyromaniac, a voodoo priestess, a cat burglar. And then, I did a series for AMC that nobody saw so the next thing that I did of some public awareness was being the mother of two Disney kids. And people who knew me from “Another World” were like “don’t let her near children!! For God’s sake keep her away from kids!!”

I think I’ve come full circle where I’m back with guns again!

AM: Well, you’re on the right side of the law now…

KIM: Maybe… Maybe I’ll go crazy. I don’t know! Something evil could get hold of me. You’ll have to wait and see.

AM: So many of the soaps are gone now.

KIM: We were the first one to come under the axe. We were the vanguard of “soaps are dying”. NBC didn’t own us, Procter and Gamble owned us and NBC wanted to own their soaps. They had “Days of our World” and “Sunset Beach”.

But… again full circle.

So, NBC soap on the east coast. We shot in New York. The other two soaps, “Sunset Beach” and “Days of our Lives” shot on the west coast. But occasionally we’d all have to do NBC functions. And we’d all get together. A grad school friend of mine was on Sunset Beach, Jason George, but we’d still get together with the west coast sensibilities of the “Days Of Our Lives” cast. There were a few really gentle, nice people but for the most part they took themselves a little seriously.

Except for one beautiful kid, who was really fuckin’ good. ‘Cause we’d have (Days of Our Lives) on in the make-up room all the time and he was gorgeous and intense but so sweet at functions, kinda quiet, kept to himself. And I still mean to tell Jensen that I remember him from “Days of Our Lives” and that kid has been solid and brilliant and good as a human being from the time he was a baby puppy! We would all stop what we were doing… he was a baby but so beautiful and too good for the show. Stood out a little like, a violin in a rock band.

AM: That is really intense work, right?

KIM: The soaps are crazy ‘cause they’re shooting an hour show in a day. They move like lightening. They don’t cut for anything. At one point I finished a scene I was doing and I was like “but I knocked the lamp over” and they were like “it’s okay – it works.” I mean, I won’t cut myself but you just kinda keep going.

You also don’t get any rehearsal time. You basically start digging into your bag of tricks. It becomes really result oriented because you don’t have time to do anything else. My record was 42 pages in one day.

There were no cue cards. Joan Rivers got cue cards. I’m sorry Joan if you’re gonna now shoot me for something you did 15 years ago. If you ever find out I said that about you and you’re insulted I will apologize personally. Yeah, she got cue cards but nobody else did.

AM: Maybe you should be in movies like – a big film adaptation of Shakespeare?

KIM: I would go in for anything Russell T. Davies wrote. My heart broke a little bit when I never got to go in for “Torchwood”. He weaves a good story.

AM: So you’d do any of the BBC shows then?

KIM: Oh yeah. Oh My God! “Primeval”.

AM: So! Favorite movies!!!

KIM: And like everyone else I say “The Princess Bride.”

AM: Guy didn’t say “The Princess Bride”.

KIM: Really? So “The Princess Bride” and every single mixed tape I had from 1985 to 1990 had Blue Monday on it by New Order. That’s why I assume every mixed tape in the world has that. Just like I assume everyone in the world loves “The Princess Bride.”

I think my favorite underestimated favorite is “Gross Pointe Blank”. John Cusack and Minnie Driver. It’s a hit man who goes home for his High school reunion … he wants to quite but he’s in the middle of a job and everyone’s trying to kill him. He’s just trying to win his High School sweet heart back. It is so funny, it really is smart.

My favorite old movie is “Harvey”. Jimmy Stewart. Harvey is a six foot tall talking rabbit that only Jimmy Stewart can see. They all think he’s crazy. But Harvey is real!!! But you spend the whole movie thinking maybe he’s not real. Beautiful. A beautiful love story.

AM: So if you could do any movie tomorrow?

KIM: Are you familiar with “My Favorite Wife” – Gary grant and Irene dune. She is ship-wrecked, he thinks she’s dead. He’s going to get married again and she’s made it back. My husband wants to do that with me and Adam Sandler.

AM: I think you’d be a good combination.

KIM: My husband Travis had that idea… and I was like “wait a minute – that’s really smart.” That saucy confidence that the women of those films had that we don’t see a lot of anymore.

AM: Is it hard leaving your daughter?

KIM: The first time I had to leave her she was 3 months old. It was tough. But this is the first time it’s hard in a different way. But this time she’s started to like me and “then” I had to leave. “No go to Canada. I go with you.”

I talked to her yesterday and she wanted to come get me from the airport.

Kim sounds like a fantastic person to have interviews. She seems so geniune, which I believe is very rare these days. You can tell she appreciates her craft and is always to do her best and be at her best at a moments notice. Also, I think I love her even more when she mention New Order! Also, I love how Supernatural has become basically six degrees of separation for the actors.

Jesus Christ, why all the people working with Jensen have to say such unbelievably good things about him?! Don’t make me like Ackles even more… There is some kind of light, special charisma, around this guy, I swear. ‘Stood out a little like, a violin in a rock band…’ Jesus, that’s a really nice comparison. And accurate. He simply stands out.
Kim Rhodes is a warm, interesting person and a really good actress.

Wow. This Has got to be one of the best interviews I’ve read, especially about Supernatural! Your questions were all the things I would have liked to know; and you created a warm environment ‘feel’ that matches the whole “Supernatural Family” attitude.

They may live and work in Vancouver, but Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki left their stomachs in the Lone Star State.

JUST HOW CLOSE ARE Supernatural costars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki? So close that they decided to buy a home together in Vancouver, where they film the show. But these roommates share more than just a mortgage: Both guys hail from Texas, and they credit their similar Southern upbringings with their instant connection. “Texas is its own country,” says Ackles, 31. “Things are just different there.”

When they’re on the set, Ackles and Padalecki still get their fill of home cooking, courtesy of the catering staff, which whips up barbecue on a regular basis. But where do the stars go for grub when they head back to Texas? We found out.

FLYING SAUCER
“It’s this great beer bar I like to go to when I want to just chill out,” says Padalecki, 26. “It’s really mellow and low-key.”

MI COCINA
“I could pretty much eat there breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” Ackles says. “You’ve got to get the nachos -- a mix of chicken and the steak.”

WHATABURGER
“Really, the food that I miss the most is Whataburger,” Padalecki says. “[I get] the double-meat, double-cheese Whataburger with fries and a vanilla milkshake. It’s like 4,000 calories!”

NICK & SAM’S
“I’ll land in Dallas, and my brother will pick me up and take me straight to Nick & Sam’s,” Padalecki says. The steak house is also a favorite of Ackles, who claims, “Jared got that from me.”

DICKEY’S BARBECUE PIT
“Dickey’s is not a fine-dining establishment,” Ackles says, “but it’s where I’d go with my friends after school or after a game.”

@sandenus He made a deal in the season 2 finale to bring Sam back to life. Sam was killed by another hunter right before that so Dean exchanged his life for Sam's exactly 1 year after Sam comes back. The season 3 finale finds that demon coming to collect what Dean owes him/her/it, thereby sending him to Hell for the rest of eternity. Castiel (the angel in this video) plucks him out of Hell so he can try and stop the oncoming apocalypse by Lucifer.

Because when Dean was in Hell he only lasted 30 years, and the first seal was "When a rightous man sheds blood" Dean didn't deserve to be in hell, and he shedded blood when he accepted Alastair's offer, and tortured the people on the rack. So Dean broke the first seal, and the person who broke the first seal is the only one who can stop Lucifer. Which is why God & the Angels needed Dean to help stop the Apocalypse.. =]

Since he went to hell for saving his brothers life, he wasn't considered a bad man. So since he gave in and spilt blood in hell, he broke the first seal, better terms, Began The Apocalypse. So, he is the only one that can really actaully stop it. Or, he would be the only guy to really help a LOT. So, God said to bring him back so the Apocalypse can be prevented. Well, from what I remember, I haven't seen the show in a while.
