Jensen Ackles' (Eric) family and friends in his hometown of Dallas are "so ecstatic they're going nuts" about Ackles' first daytime role, as Sami's twin brother; Eric. Although Ackles used to watch AMC with his homemaker mom, Donna, he never thought he'd actually be on a daytime drama. But he's not the first member of his family to be in showbiz. His dad, Alan, has done commercials and radio voiceovers for many years, and Jensen did commercials and catalogue modeling during his early teens. After his high school graduation last year, he came to Los Angeles "on a whim," admits the young actor, and landed a role on the sitcom Mr. Rhodes. "That's when I decided to make acting my career," he insists. By the way, Ackles says he's "very single and looking for a girlfriend."
After five months of living by himself in Los Angeles, Jensen Ackles (Eric, Days) is welcoming a roomate: Ty Vaughn, a high school buddy. "He works in production for the Saturday morning show Hang Time," Jensen says, noting that Ty was slated to be his roomate at Texas Tech. "But when I decided not to go to college, Ty said, 'Well, I'm not going to go live by myself.' He ended up staying at home and going to community college for a semester. Then I convinced him to move out here."
Jensen's glad he did. "It's been so much nicer having somebody here who knows me and who I know. The two of us have been friends for years." Now the guys are adjusting to their first apartment together. "I always imagined what it would be like living on my own. It's cool. But it requires a lot more responsibility."
For the most part Jensen enjoys it, but there is a downside. "Like the big pile of laundry that's piled up in the corner of my room. Then there's washing dishes and keeping the house clean. I really never had to worry about that when I lived at home," Jensen says. He and Ty are slowly developing their domestic engineering skills. "We're learning to be maids, cooks---all that stuff. Dabbling on the stove can be fun, as long as it's quick and easy."

JOSH TAYLOR (Roman, Days of Our Lives) ranks co-star Jensen Ackles (Eric) right up there with the best of his TV sons. "I've had some good ones---Jason Bateman (The Hogan Family), Luke Perry (ex-Dylan McKay, Beverly Hills, 90210)," Josh says. "Jensen's in very good company and certainly not behind them. I'm impressed with him. He's a terrific kid and a very good actor. He listens very well. As a result, his stuff is real. There's very little acting going on."
According to Josh, he and Jensen have bonded. "Basically, what I did when Jensen first got here was say, 'Any time you want to run lines, just come to my room.' And he has. We've gotten into some good discussions." During one, the pair discovered "We're both jocks. I have a football background; I was a quarterback at Dartmouth. And I've played some baseball. I found out Jensen played baseball and lacrosse in high school."
Aside from their affinity for sports, Josh has noticed "a similarity in nature" between him and Jensen. "We're both pretty easygoing. And a lot of people have told me that there's a similarity in appearance."
Josh predicts Jensen will be a big hit with Days fans. "I think women will be very happy with him, as well as men," he notes. "He's got that quality that lends itself to being attractive to [both sexes]. Jensen's a woman's man, and a man's man, too."

When Jensen Ackles learned that he had landed the role of Eric Brady, the 19-year-old Texas native understood that he wasn't just playing any ol' character, he was portraying a Brady...a member of a very rooted family tree. Although he was new to the soap world when he walked onto the DAYS set in June, he knew that all eyeswould be focused on him and his interpretation of Roman and Marlena's son and Sami's twin. "From day one, I was in the thick of things," he recalls. "When you're a Brady, you're connected to just about everybody."
In his first few weeks on the show, Ackles was thrown into scenes with everybody who is anybody on DAYS, including such heavy hitters as Deidre Hall (Marlena), Drake Hogestyn (John) and Eileen Davidson (Kristen/Susan). "It's been a humbling experience to work opposite such well-known actors," he admits, "but I feel like I'm learning from the best."
LESSON ONE: CHEMISTRY
Ever since Ackles set foot in the studio, he diligently has been studying the acting technique of his seasoned co-stars; however, his initial lesson in the craft came from his father, Alan, who makes his living as an actor in the Dallas area. Although Ackles performed theater in high school, the teen planned on attending Texas Tech to study sports medicine rather than performing. His life took a different course when an agent discovered him at an acting seminar in Dallas and recruited him for roles on SWEET VALLEY HIGH and the sitcom MR. RHODES.
Then, when DAYS was searching for a young blond guy to play Sami's twin brother, Ackles' agent sent him in. He spent the next several nerve-racking days auditioning for the role. "The first screen test was with a bunch of guys," he remembers. "Then it was cut to five and then three."
"By the end," he concludes, "it really came down to who had the best chemistry with Alison Sweeney (Sami)."
Apparently producers noticed the on-screen give-and-take between Ackles and Sweeney, and decided to give the fledgling actor a chance. "Alison and I really hit it off," he says. "I found it so hard to believe that such a nice person could play such an evil-spirited character. It gave me a lot of respect for her."
When DAYS offered him a contract, he put off college plans---temporarily, he insists---and, with his parents' blessing, moved from the Lone Star State to Tinseltown. "I couldn't turn this offer down," he says. "I think I would have always wondered what might have been."
LESSON TWO: PSYCHOLOGY
After Ackles accepted the role, he was told that he was Sami's brother returning to Salem after a long hiatus in Colorado. In his first weeks of taping, he knew very little about the character and, like viewers, was curious to find out whether Eric would be a carbon copy of his conniving twin. "It would have been a lot of fun to play a sinister role," he admits, "but I consider myself a pretty nice guy and playing a good character is more true to my nature."
And, it turns out, to Eric's. "He wants to protect his family, but he's very held back," says the portrayer. "There are definitely some skeletons in his closet, but at this point I don't have a clue what they could be."
Eventually, Eric will have to unpack his emotional baggage, too. Ackles views him as good-natured, but understandably reluctant to get too close to people considering the Bradys' bizzare history of bad luck. "It was a blow for him to come back to such huge problems," he notes. "His dad is dying, his mom is in love with another man, and his sister is all screwed up. It's overwhelming."
LESSON THREE: MATH
While Ackles' on-screen family relations are immersed in perplexities, his off-screen life is an open book. Its simple equation: a close clan + a strong upbringing by good parents = his humble attitude. It's not in his nature to "go to Hollywood," as his buds in Texas tease that he has. "They keep saying that I'm going to change, but I don't want to," he says. "I want to stay the person I was brought up to be."
"I'm grateful to be here, but to be honest, I'm more grateful for what I've had before this all started."
