Жанр вестерна давно оторвался от своих корней американской мифологии фронтира / необжитых земель / дикого Запада. В конце концов, эстетика классического вестерна многим обязана азиатскому кинематографу, в особенности самурайской тематике японского кино: у множества легендарных лент жанра ноги растут «из Куросавы», а «Великолепная семерка» Стерджса - это попросту римейк «Семи самураев». Два года назад к списку поставщиков жанра подключилась Австралия: режиссер Джон Хиллкоут дал миру потрясающей силы вестерн «Предложение» по сценарию Ника Кейва.

Теперь в новом вестерне «Поезд на Юму» режиссер Джеймс Мэнголд столкнул лбами двух прекрасных актеров-иностранцев – новозеландца Рассела Кроу с валлийцем Кристианом Бейлом, дав им в поддержку цельноамериканский коллектив. На вторых ролях значатся Питер Фонда, молодой и очень талантливый Логан Лерман, памятный еще по камео-ролям рядом с Мелом Гибсоном в «Патриоте» и «Чего хочет женщина», Гретхен Моль и Бен Фостер.

Фильм, снятый по рассказу «3:10 to Yuma» Элмора Леонарда, автора множества прозаических вестернов малой формы, описывает вполне жизненную ситуацию. Доведенный до отчаяния беспросветной нуждой аризонский фермер Дэн Эванс (Бейл), бывший снайпером на недавней Гражданской войне, за скромное вознаграждение в 200 долларов соглашается конвоировать пойманного при его помощи Бена Уэйда (Кроу), главаря банды, терроризирующей окрестное население и зарождающихся индустриальных магнатов Юго-Запада. Уэйд давно объявлен в розыск, но самый большой зуб на него наточила Южная железнодорожная компания, которой помогают бойцы Детективного агентства Пинкертона.

Не такая уж это простая задача – отконвоировать схваченного главаря банды до поезда на Юму – городок у реки Колорадо на стыке границ Мексики, Калифорнии и Аризоны, в котором есть федеральный суд. Помехой делу может послужить кто угодно: банда Бена Уэйда, в отсутствие главаря руководимая его прихлебателем Чарли Принцем (Бен Фостер) с ярко выраженными садистскими наклонностями, мстительные индейцы, согнанные со своих земель, охотники за головами и просто враги нажитые Беном.

Нынешний «Поезд на Юму» - это римейк одноименного фильма 1957 г. с актерами уровня Форда Глена в роли обаятельного злодея и Ван Хефлина в роли владельца ранчо, рискнувшего всем ради предания Уэйда в руки правосудия. Прежняя версия режиссера Делмера Дейвза была в большей степени посвященна психологии действующих лиц. В версии Мэнголда усилен социальный мотив. Пусть в ней и раздвинуты рамки повествования и форсирована жестокость, но в картине сделано все для того, чтобы сохранить непритязательный дух оригинала.

По ходу действия Дэн начинает понимать, что его антагонист – не самый худший представитель человеческого рода. Так ли ужасен грабитель с большой дороги, если те же «Пинкертоны», охотники за головами и стражи закона не отличаются от бандитов почти ничем?

Бейл вполне убедителен в роли фермера, пытающегося противостоять хищническому напору капиталистов послевоенного периода. Герой Кроу, если не воспринимать его игру, как дешевый маскарад, скорее напоминает психопата, за дьявольским обаянием скрывающего беспощадность и извращенную цельность натуры. Дэну явно недостает чувства юмора. На его фоне Бен лучше – упитаннее,– выглядит. Он может мило беседовать с женой Дэна и произвести впечатление на его отпрыска (Логан Лерман), в штыки встречающего назойливые проявления отцовской добропорядочности.

Фильм выстроен на слаженной работе великолепно подобранного актерского состава и на недюжинном обаянии ведущих актеров – от галантного Бена Уэйда до стопроцентно отталкивающего Чарли Принца, сработанного Фостером. Мэнголд решил не вмешиваться со своими режиссерскими заморочками, целиком положившись на актеров – и выиграл.

И хотя исполнители главных ролей не в состоянии «освежить» заезженные роли, они сделали все возможное для наполнения новой киноверсии действием. Их герои, едущие навстречу верной гибели, понимают, что на самом деле они намного более похожи друг на друга, чем казалось изначально, а убедительность, с которой это сделано, не оставит никого равнодушным.

20 things you may not know about Winchester

1. The legend of St Swithun originates in Winchester - according to the legend, the saint's remains were moved against his dying wishes from their final resting place in the grounds of the cathedral to the inner sanctum, whereupon it proceeded to rain for 40 days as a sign of his displeasure. Now, if it rains on the saint's day (15th July), it is said to herald another 39 days of rain!

2. The Radio 4 Gardeners' Question Time potting shed is located at Sparsholt College, just outside of Winchester. Sparsholt is also one of the few regular venues in the UK for lawnmower racing.

3. Marwell Wildlife is the only place in the UK where you can see the Coquerels Mouse Lemur and the Dorcas Gazelle. It also has some of the world's rarest big cats including the Amur leopard and the snow leopard, and one of the smallest - the enchanting sand cat. Visitors can stay at the adjacent Marwell Hotel - a unique safari-style building in a woodland setting.

4. Feast your eyes on the spectacular Avenue of Limes at charming 17th century Lainston House. Measured at 9/10ths of a mile, it is the longest line of limes in England, with trees dating back as far as 1716. Guests staying at the hotel can enjoy a truly English weekend with croquet on the lawn, fishing on the River Test and clay pigeon shooting.

5. Despite Winchester's association with King Alfred, no one has ever found his remains. Thanks to excavations at the end of the 1990s, the location of a medieval abbey church was identified at Hyde, situated on the northern outskirts of the city, and this was found to be the last known resting place of Alfred the Great. Kim Wilkie, one of the foremost landscape architects in the UK, has designed a contemporary garden to mark the site. Sadly, the bodies of Alfred, his Queen and his son which were buried here have still not been found...

6. Winchester College is believed to be the oldest continuously running school in the country. During the spring term, the boys play a unique version of football, Winkies (shorthand for Winchester College Football).

7. Expand your mind! Back in 1850 England's first public library was established in Winchester in part of the former city gaol.

8. Winchester is fast growing a reputation for the quality of its local produce, and plays host to the largest farmers' market in the UK, which is popular with the likes of Rick Stein. The nearby market town of Alresford is the watercress capital of the UK, and local rivers are renowned for their excellent trout. Why not surprise your taste buds with tea at the Cathedral Café - voted one of the UK's top tearooms by The Times. Winchester is home to a host of award-winning gastro-pubs and restaurants located throughout the district.

9. Despite its rich heritage, Winchester's love affair with the modern is apparent across the city. Peter Freeman's Luminous Motion sculpture is positioned in the cathedral square. Visitors can select the colour of the small pulsing lights on the tower by texting 07980 732147 with their choice from options such as Lightdancer, Breathe, Radiance and Eyepop. Antony Gormley's Sound II sits in the cathedral's crypt and works by Elisabeth Frink and Barbara Hepworth are featured throughout the city.

10. From the late 18th century, Winchester was the leading medical centre outside London - one of the reasons Jane Austen moved here from her nearby home at Chawton in 1817. She was laid to rest in Winchester Cathedral upon her death, following a brief residence in College Street.

11. Experience spooky happenings at the Theatre Royal, which is said to have two resident ghosts, one who is believed to be John Simpkins, one of the original founders who converted the Market Hotel into the Theatre Royal in 1913. If you are after some light relief, check out the regular comedy night bills at the recently renovated venue.

12. During World War Two, what is now the West Downs Performing Arts and Conference Centre at University of Winchester, but was then a public boys' school, was closed down and used as a base from which to co-ordinate plans for D-Day. Churchill and Eisenhower also met at nearby Southwick House while planning the invasion. Churchill's War Cabinet took up residence in a special train in the long siding at Droxford Station for several days whilst final preparations for the landings were being made. You can still see the D-Day map in the Map Room at Southwick House.

13. The village of Hambledon, just outside of Winchester, is the birthplace of cricket. At Broadha'penny Down a cricket club was formed in the 1760s and this is where the rules of the game as it is known throughout the world today were first established. The Bat and Ball pub has stood opposite the cricket ground since the club was formed and has a wealth of memorabilia.

14. Boutique hotel chain Hotel du Vin originated in Winchester. Founders Robin Hutson and Gerard Basset opened the doors to the Winchester hotel to widespread acclaim in 1994, and still live in the city.

15. Winchester doesn't like to blow its own trumpet, but the City Museum houses Winchester city's original Moot Horn. Made in Winchester in the late 12th century, records show the horn was still being blown at city functions and meetings throughout the 18th century. A replica is blown at a variety of formal functions today.

16. Fort Nelson, on Portsdown Hill, near Fareham, is not actually named after the famous Admiral, but his monument - the original 'Nelson's column'. Built in 1807 and still standing next to the Fort, it pre-dates its more famous counterpart - in Trafalgar Square - by 36 years. The bricks used to build Fort Nelson, called 'Fareham Reds', are exactly the same as those used to build the Royal Albert Hall - there were 10 million bricks used in the construction of the fort. (Both buildings were completed in 1871.)

17. Winchester has a strong affinity with British military history. The Royal Green Jackets Museum has 34 Victoria Crosses on display - more than in any other public museum in the UK. Since the institution of the VC in 1856, The Royal Green Jackets have been awarded more (59) than any other regiment in the British Army. The 150th anniversary of the VC will be marked in 2006 with a special exhibition in July and August entitled Focus on Courage: The 59 Victoria Crosses of The Royal Green Jackets, which will be accompanied by a book of the same name.

18. Much of Winchester's shopping affords a specialised and individual service. Visitors can see highly-skilled goldsmiths at work at Jeremy France Jewellers at the top of the High Street, or order tailor-made items for the home at Forme on Parchment Street, where centuries-old Italian artistry is brought together with the latest trends in modern design.

19. John Keats wrote his ode 'To Autumn' during a stay in Winchester in 1819, taking his inspiration from his daily walk past the cathedral and college and through the water meadows. Visitors can follow a self-guided walk in the poet's footsteps.

20. Diver William Walker spent six years toiling below the walls of the cathedral in a bid to replace the foundations. Engineer Francis Fox realised that this was the only way to stop the imminent collapse of the cathedral. It is Walker however who is immortalised in brass and who is commemorated annually at Winchester's patronal festival as the man who 'saved the cathedral with his own hands'.

The horror genre, both on television and in film, isn't exactly lacking in female characters who're sweet, young, pretty, in peril, and in need of an action hero to save them. But when Tania Saulnier plays that kind of role, in projects like Supernatural and Slither, the cliche damsel ends up something else, something a little stronger and more interesting.

Sequential Tart: How did you get into acting?

Tania Saulnier: My mom got me started with acting when I was eight. I was also a competitive dancer during my teen years, so I put the acting career on hold. When I was 15 I realized I wanted to get back into acting. I quit dance and have been acting ever since.

ST: Is acting something you have long-term ambitions for?

TS: I can't predict the future, but acting is my passion, so I will keep working hard and hope for the best. I have other ambitions I hope to pursue one day.

ST: What was your experience on the Supernatural set like?

TS: My experience on the set of Supernatural was nothing but fun. I had a blast; it was a real privilege working with director Kim Manners.

ST: What's been your favourite project to work on so far?

TS: My favorite project, by far, was Slither. It's rare to find a cast and crew that work so well together and are so much fun. James Gunn was one of the most interesting, funny, caring and talented directors I have ever worked with.

ST: What's been the most difficult?

TS: Slither was the most difficult project I've worked on. I didn't quite realize how much energy goes into horror films. Trying to keep your energy up and the tears flowing can get a little exhausting.

ST: Is that your knee on the Slither poster?

TS: Yes, that is my knee on the Slither poster.

ST: You're doing a convention in the UK early next year, aren't you? Will it be your debut experience as a con guest?

TS: Yes. I am doing the Asylum convention next year, and it is my first.

ST: What would your dream job be?

TS: Acting is my dream job. One of my favourite moments in my career was meeting Marcia Gay Harden on the set of The Invisible. She is not only a fantastic actress but a really beautiful person.

ST: What do you find scary?

TS: Dating actors.

Remember, before you all sent in questions we mentioned that Jensen had every right not to answer a question if he didn't want to. So don't feel discouraged if you don't see your question posted. He may not have had an answer, so please don't take it personally.

Hey Jensen! First, thank you to the newsletter for giving us the opportunity to ask Jensen a question! My name is Mayuri and I truly admire your work. What advice do you have for aspiring actors? Any suggestions on where or how to get started? Thank you! Also, would you be willing to give fans an e-mail address or screen name where we can talk to you?

Jensen Ackles:
Mayuri, for aspiring actors I would have to say; start by taking an acting class generally in the field you want to pursue (ex. commercials, television, theater, motion picture). Then really give it thought and ask yourself if this is something you really want to pursue. I won't lie to you, it is a tough industry to get involved with and really be successful, and those without passion and drive can easily fall by the wayside. If you have the passion, then the next step is to get an agent. Someone to get you in the door to those people who need to see your talent and then…let the cards fall where they may. But keep a strong head, don't get discouraged and never stop honing your skills.

Hey Jensen, This is Tracey, I met you April 99 in NJ and gave you the drawing of you and Ali Sweeney as a belated b-day gift. I have to say I LOVE you on Dark Angel. I only started watching once I heard you joined the cast
and I think your character is too funny. I love his wise cracking attitude.What I want to know is how it is working in Canada and which do you prefer better, doing a soap opera or a weekly show?


Jensen Ackles:
Hi Tracey, it's good to hear from you and thank you for the drawing. I actually had it hanging in my dressing room at "Days" until I left. It now hangs in my parent's house in Texas. You are very talented. To answer your question, I would have to say that there are things about both shows I prefer and things I don't. Working on "Days" there was more of a sense of family, and the hours were definitely less grueling. It was just less of a hectic work environment. Where as "Dark Angel's" hours are very different and it takes much longer to shoot things than did "Days". It takes us 10 full 12-17 hour days to shoot one episode. Whereas at "Days" it took about one 8-hour day. But on the other hand, "Dark Angel" only shoots part of the year giving us a nice hiatus, whereas "Days" shoots year round. (Kind of hard to make vacation plans). There are many differences, but at this stage in my life, I'm happy to be with "DA"…it's a step in the direction I want to go.

Jensen Ackles:
No/….at the moment…yes.

Jensen, If you had not chosen acting as your career path, what might you be doing otherwise?

Jensen Ackles:
I have no clue…that was 5 ½ years ago when I made the decision to move to Los Angeles and do this…there's no telling. I'm sure I could come up with some pretty interesting scenarios.

Do you ever plan on returning to Days, or any other soap opera in the future? Do you think you might do a guest appearance on Days? Do you miss Days?

Jensen Ackles:
I would never rule out going back to "Days". I loved it there and the people are still family. I do miss the cast and crew and fans. When you're doing daytime, you actually get to meet the people who watch you. That's very important. A guest appearance would be fun. We'll have to see.

Jensen, Now that you're on Dark Angel is there any possibility that you'll still be holding events to see your fans? I met you back in September of 1999 and it was incredible, so I was hoping there might be future opportunities to see you.

Jensen Ackles:
Doing prime-time television can be very consuming. And, living outside the country makes it a little difficult to do events like that. Not to mention that events like that aren't really held for night-time cast members like they are for the daytime cast members. It just doesn't seem to happen much. I wish it did though.

What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment so far in life? What do you hope to accomplish in the future?

Jensen Ackles:
Probably moving to L.A. at 18 and immediately becoming self-dependent. I have so many.

Hey Jensen! I was just wondering if it was true that you were offered the lead role as "Guy" in Never Been Kissed (with Drew Barrymore), but could not take the role because of scheduling conflicts with Days? Thanks and keep up the great work!!

Jensen Ackles:
Yes, actually that is true, in fact, Jessica Alba (who was in "Never Been Kissed") and I have had a laugh about it.

Hey Jensen! Do you ever miss going back to DAYS? Also, how do you feel about the september 11th terrorism attacks? Thank you for your time and God Bless!

Jensen Ackles:
9/11 was unreal. I happened to be in Canada at the time and really didn't get a sense of how awful it really was until a few days later when it hit me like a ton of bricks…that the place I call home, the country that is invincible, my country of pride and freedom, the place we all feel safe, had been completely violated. I immediately jumped on a plane and flew to be with my family. It really frightened me. I pray to God that this new evil in our world will be abolished quickly.

Hey! Great job w/ the newsletter. This is my question for the Jensen interview.. do you see yourself in the character "Alec" in Dark Angel?

Jensen Ackles:
I hope not…he's that cocky little punk my mother tried so hard not to raise. And, I'm pretty sure she did her job.

First I'd like to say, hello stranger!!!!!! Long time no chat. I hope you are doing well and enjoying Canada. I think the people at Fox are one of the nicest bunch of people to work with, in your case work for! I was wondering if you have read or seen past episodes of Dark Angel other than the episode you guest-starred on last season? I know you said when you first started on DAYS that Drake sat you down and gave you the history of the characters and storylines. Did anyone do that for you on Dark Angel, or did you do any research of your own? Personally, I just want to add, that you have definitely given the show the added zip it needed. I also think it is great that they have added the mutants. It reminds me of the series Beauty and the Beast, which I loved only DA has quite a kick to it:-) Hopefully our paths will cross soon. You know you always have a friend in NY :-) Keep up the good work! P.S. I hope you liked the Aromatherapy stuff :-)

Hello, Christine. It's great to hear from you. I hope all is well and life is treating you good. And, yes the people at Fox have been very good to me over the past year. I'm really happy to be there. To answer your question…I did do a little research on last season just to get a sense of what the existing characters were all about. The producers have been very helpful in answering any questions I have as well. It's not as much of a family atmosphere over at "DA" like it is at "Days"…Mainly due to the fact that cast is all young and there are only about 7 or 8 of us where "Days" has 30 cast
members of all ages. But I'm definitely having fun. Well, keep well over there on the East Coast and hopefully I'll see ya soon.

Ya think we should meet first! I'm still trying to figure that out myself. I'm not sure I have done enough roles to claim a method to my madness.

Actually, I just did it for the role. The director thought it would make the character more authentic and I agreed.

Hello Jensen Ackles, I enjoy watching your character Alec on "Dark Angel" very much, so I was wonderin if you've been involved in a lot of projects since leaving DOOL, since crossing over to primetime TV is there any shows you'd like to be in or any other projects you'd like to be associated with in the future?

Jensen Ackles:
My business team and I are constantly looking for other projects to be involved in…it is an ongoing process and yes there are definitely shows and films I would love to be a part of if I was right for the role. But, that's all part of this game.

Hi! I was wondering do you still live in Los Angeles even though Dark Angel is filmed in Canada? Do you ever meet with fans personally?

Jensen Ackles:
I do still base myself out of L.A. but at the moment I spend most of my time at my apartment in Vancouver. I go back and forth quite a bit.

Jensen Ackles:
I consider myself a nondenominational Christian. I grew up in a Bible church and still hold those beliefs very close to me.

Hi Ashley. Ummm….yes, I'm single at the moment and "Days" is always a possibility.

Not that I know of.

Actually yes, I have met both of them just briefly and yes, I've gotten to meet quite a lot of very interesting people.

I would have to say that the newsletter Beth and Alla put out is the coolest thing a fan or fans have ever done for me.

What did you do with your new house in LA after you found out you had to move to Vancouver for Dark Angel? Does Dark Angel leave you with any free time to do other projects (like movies or tv movies), and if so, are you planning to pursue any? Also, what do you like most/least about working on dark angel? Jensen Ackles:
I sold it. Yes, we get a 3-month hiatus in the summer and I'm hoping to maybe do a film of some sort. I spent Christmas with my family in Dallas, Texas and New Years this year I spent in Austin, Texas with friends. I try not to do that. I usually just set myself up.

Anthony Hopkins, Jim Caviezel, Ben Stiller, Brad Pitt, Ewan McGregor to list a few.

If you were offered a role today to be the star in a hot new movie, and had the option of choosing your leading lady, who would you choose?

Jennifer Connelly

What kind of role would you never consider to portray, no matter how much money was offered?

Jensen Ackles:
Really depends on the story

How would you feel if you were offered a role to a sequel of one of your all-time fave movies? Would you take it, or just wait to get something completely new?

Jensen Ackles:
Thrilled. And depends on writer/director/sсriрt/studio.

I like them…they're fun

Listening to my music while driving

How have you adjusted to Vancouver's climate?

Yes, it's really not all that bad.... in fact, I really like it. It can be a little rainy at times; but then again, I love Texas but can't stand the heat.

Alla:
What, besides the weather, is the biggest difference between living in Los Angeles, and living in Vancouver?

Jensen Ackles:
It really is a different country. Canadians are much more laid back and aren't so infatuated with success and materialistic things like Americans can be so guilty of.

Alla:
Do you have more time off now than when you were taping daily?

Jensen Ackles:
Actually I have less time due to the lengthy days and also because I'm a main character on a smaller cast.

Alla:
What do you do when you have time off?

Jensen Ackles:
Either go skiing with my Canadian buddies, or fly to L.A. to hangout or fly to Dallas.

Alla:
Where were you the morning of September 11th, and how did you first find out about what was going on?

Jensen Ackles:
In bed in Vancouver when I got a call from a friend in L.A. who told me to get up and turn on the TV. I didn't believe her at first but when she said we were under attack, I jumped and didn't leave the TV for hours.
