Jensen Ackles
Recently listed as one of E! Online's "Sizzlin' 16 of 2004" and YM magazine's "Hottest Guys of 2003," Jensen Ackles is a young actor on the rise. Ackles will next be seen this fall as Jason Teague, love interest to Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) in The WB's Smallville. Ackles will make his big screen debut later this year in Sony Pictures' Devour, opposite Dominique Swain and Shannon Sossymon. The film was directed by David Winkler. Ackles was most recently seen on Dawson's Creek in a recurring role and on Dark Angel as a series regular. His additional work in television includes co-starring in the mini-series Blonde, opposite Poppy Montgomery and Patrick Dempsey. In 1997, he began his acting career with much critical acclaim when he joined the cast of Days of Our Lives. In addition to three Emmy nominations (1998, 1999 and 2000), he won the Soap Opera Digest Award for Best Male Newcomer in 1998. Ackles was born on March 1, 1978, in Dallas, Texas. Jensen has been around acting his entire life. His dad,Alan, appeared in "Walker, Texas Ranger", "The Challenger", and "Guilty of Innocence". Alan also did radio commercials and voice overs to support the family. Jensen Ackles got his start at the age of four appearing in print advertising and commercials for Nabisco, Wal-Mart, and Radio Shack. In 1995, about ten years later, Jensen attended a workshop for actors in Dallas where he was discovered by a talent agency and management firm from Los Angeles. Since they were impressed with his work, they quickly signed Jensen. They then encouraged Jensen to move to California after he finished high school at Berkner High School in Richardson. Before he moved to California, he appeared in the PBS series "Wishbone" which is taped in Dallas. After a few months living in L.A.,he landed a guest star role on "Sweet Valley High". Soon after that role he landed a regular role on the NBC sitcom "Mr. Rhodes". The show, however, was cancelled. After his role there he got the role on "Days of Our Lives" playing Eric Brady, Sami Brady's twin brother who has been living in Colorado. Jensen has said he likes living in L.A. but the barbecue just isn't the same as it is in Texas.

Unlike many former daytime soap actors, Ackles will never say never about returning to his roots. "It was a great job, and I had a good experience with everyone. After three years, it was almost like a little family. I left on really good terms, so it's always kind of in the back of my mind."
Even the biggest Dawson's Creek fans would have to confess that during the last few months with the Creek-sters, one of the few bright spots on the show was former soap star Jensen Ackles, as heartthrob counselor C.J. Ackles, who was nominated for three Daytime Emmys during his 1997-2000 stint as one of the Brady twins on the NBC soap Days of Our Lives, also added some much-needed freshness to the fledgling series Dark Angel in 2001. Oh, and he was a runner-up to Tom Welling for the lead role on the WB's Smallville.
But finally, with the midseason premiere of intense family drama Still Life, the former child model gets a chance to get in on the ground floor of a series he can call his own--whether he realizes it or not.
"I don't need a huge, blockbuster role. I'm not looking to take the world by storm. I just kinda want to start finding my way in with little cool parts. A real character here, a normal guy there--I'm just mixing it up a bit to see what I'm made of," says Ackles, who plays the angst-addled Max, part of an all-American family that has been devastated by the murder of its golden-boy eldest son.
With several episodes of Still Life already on tap, Ackles made a comedy short with friends, who have since shopped it around to various film festivals. Yet, TV is Ackles' main domain, and his fans won't let him forget it.
"It kind of catches me off guard when people come up to me," says Ackles. "It's extremely flattering and humbling all at the same time. Because when you're out shooting 14-15 hours a day, for three or four months at a time, you don't see anybody from the outside world. You forget that the stuff you're doing is actually being seen by millions of people."
Better get used to it, Jensen.
Jensen Ackles' busy life
This 24-year-old Texan is no stranger to our TV screens — you saw Jensen on Days of Our Lives and Dark Angel, and now he's starring in Dawson's Creek as peer counselor CJ. Obviously he's busy, but not so busy that he didn't have time to talk to us about his life.
How did you get into acting?
My father is an actor, so he brought me into his agency when I was young. It wasn't something I wanted to do until high school, when I started taking theater and really liked it. Then an agent found me and wanted me to come out to Los Angeles and give it a shot. I gave myself six months [to find something], but it only took me like a week to get a job.
Do you feel guilty when you see other actors who have been struggling to get work for years, while you got work after a week?
Oh yeah. I've got to be careful who I tell that story to. I've told a few people and they're like, "Oh, I hate you." It's not that easy — I've seen people [who've been] here longer than I have been, [and they're] still trying to get commercials.
What was your first job?
It was an NBC sitcom called Mr. Rhodes. I played Malcolm; he was an airhead, aloof jock. The show was shot at Universal Studios, so every day I got to go to up there to work — it's like a movie-making mecca. I was blown away.
Have you ever had any auditions that you really wanted, but didn't get?
I came very close to Smallville — it was down to me and Tom [Welling]. I was excited about it, but I knew I shouldn't put all my eggs in one basket. It would have been a great gig, but I got Dark Angel about three months later.
You also starred in Days of Our Lives...
It almost didn't happen — it was about three or four months after Mr. Rhodes was canceled. I was auditioning but not getting the jobs, and I was discouraged. Meanwhile I'm getting calls from all my friends who are in college having a blast. I went for the Day of Our Lives audition, and I was so frustrated that I thought, "If I don't get this one, I'm moving back home."
Do you ever regret not going to college?
Right now, no, because I feel as though I got a very interesting "life college." I moved out to this huge city all by myself. I had to grow up quickly. I learned a lot of things about the real world that my friends are just learning. Also, I started reading the dictionary and books about college education — I was teaching myself what my friends were learning in class. And it worked out — I would come home and talk to them about stuff that they hadn't even learned yet.
How did you get the part in Dawson's Creek?
I went into the WB and read for the producers of Dawson's Creek. It was a guest spot or something and I didn't get it — they were looking for something different. But they knew me, so they just called up later and offered me the role of CJ instead.
Are you psyched to be on the show?
It's cool. Dawson's Creek is a well-oiled machine. It's nice when everybody knows their job and everybody's doing it well and there's not too many kinks in the system. I think [the cast] have had their ups and downs — we've all read the tabloids and the articles about them over the years. But everybody gets along; it's a happy set and the people are very welcoming.
What about the well-publicized tensions between Josh Jackson and James Van Der Beek?
I haven't really experienced it firsthand, but I know a little bit about the beef with them. I think that they're like, "I don't have anything to say to you and you don't have anything to say to me, and we're cool with that." I've hung out with both of them simultaneously, they've been in the same room, and they were fine. I mean, they weren't clowning around, but they're cordial and they're adult about it.
If in real life you had to choose between Jen and Audrey, who would it be?
I don't think either of them is really my type. I think they're both really pretty girls and they both have great personalities, but I don't think I could make a decision on it.
If neither of them is your type, what is?
There are just certain things that turn my head. It may be a girl's sense of humor, it may be her wit, or her belief system — it could be a lot of different things.
And once your head is turned, is it easy for you to approach a girl?
No, I'm not very good at all! It takes a girl to come up to me to strike up a conversation. I try to show them by looks that I'm definitely noticing them and there's an interest. But the whole approaching thing — I have no lines, no tactic.
What would you like to do next?
I love shooting Dawson's, but I really enjoyed doing Mr. Rhodes, too, and I haven't done comedy since. I don't watch a whole lot of television, so I don't know what show I'd choose to be on — I went a whole year, last year, without television. It was great. I didn't miss it. I was doing a lot of other productive things in my day other then plopping down on the couch and watching TV.
So what do you do in your spare time?
It's football season, so me and my buddies are strapping on the cleats, going out onto a field, and tossing the pigskin around. I've got a good group of friends, and I try to spend a lot of time with them. And I fly home to see my family quite a bit when I'm not working.
What do you do during your downtime in Wilmington [where they film Dawson's Creek]?
During the summer it was really beautiful, because you could go down to the beach and do some surfing. Now, since fall came around, everybody gets together and goes out and has fun. We'll go to an arcade and play some bumper cars.

What's the nicest thing anyone's ever done for you?: "My grandmother sends me notes and cards once a week so I don't get homesick."
What would be your dream date?: "Having an incredible candlelight dinner and then riding horses on top of the Hollywood Hills."
Can you recall your most embarrassing moment?: "When I was 15, I had a modeling shoot on the SMU (Southern Methodist University) campus in Dallas. It was during classes, and the jeans I was supposed to wear were too small, so they cut out the entire back to fit (better) in front. In the midst of it all, the classes let out and my underwear was showing. It wasn't very funny to me."
Jensen Ackles as Jason Teague plays Lana's new love
Romancing gorgeous girls such as Kristin Kreuk would make most guys nervous, not Jensen Ackles. As Jason Teague on Smallville, Ackles is fully prepared to go the distance. The only problem? This former Days Of Our Lives star, is not quite sure if his part in Lana's life is for better or...for worse. "Right now, he's got good intentions, but there's a chance that could change. We just don't know yet where they are going to take this guy."
My character is: "Lana's new love...They had a summer romance in Paris and now's he's come to Smallville to be with her."
To prepare for this role, I: "Asked the producers to send me the last three seasons of Smallville. I started watching them and pretty soon my buddies were watching too. Now everybody is obsessed and they are constantly calling me to find out when they can get the next tape."
My first big taste of The WB: "Was when I did Dawson's. I've pretty much been able to work in television since the beginning of my [career]. I've been fortunate. I moved to Los Angeles [from Dallas, TX] right out of high school. My folks gave me six months to make it. I thought that was fair. Obviously, I lasted a lot longer than that."
I'm not jaded: "[Smallville] is probably the fifth series that I've worked on and it still holds the same awe inspiring power that my very first job did."
Jensen Ackles is ready for new love
At 18, as he prepared to commence his studies in sports medicine, Jensen Ackles decided to put everything on hold to become an actor. He left his native Texas and settled in Los Angeles with the objective of obtaining a role within 6 months. A week later, he landed his first role. Today we can find him in "Smallville" where he plays Lana's new boyfriend...
Is it true that you were offered the role of Eliza Dushku's boyfriend in "Tru Calling" but you turned down the role?
Yes, it's true. In fact, a few weeks before auditioning for "Smallville", I had auditioned for "Tru Calling". Everything went well and I technically was supposed to join the series in its second season. However, I later auditioned for "Smallville" and was offered the role of Jason Teague. I hesitated for a bit, and finally, without really knowing why, I called the producers of "Tru Calling" to turn down their offer. The funny thing is that the character I was supposed to portray ended up being named Jensen. When I heard that, I could not believe it!
How did you prepare for this role?
As soon as I learned that I got the role, I asked the producers to send me tapes of the first three seasons of "Smallville" for I didn't know the show very well. At the beginning, I remember setting myself up comfortably to watch the tapes at my house and having my friends drop by unexpectedly and settle next to me in the sofa and asking what this lame show was. Except that after 10 minutes they got hooked to it and could not stop watching. Then, they would drop by the next day to watch more episodes. Toward the end, there were about ten of us completely hooked on “Smallville” [laughs]. I then became anxious to join the crew, specially Kristin Kreuk since I knew we would be shooting quite a few scenes together.
Since we are talking about that, several recent publications have claimed that you and Kristin are an item. Is that true?
That's not true! Simply, we recently shot the episode in which Jason kisses Lana for the first time and papers managed to get photographs from this episode and claim that I was going out with Kristin. I can assure you that we’re just friends, nothing else.
Now that you have began shooting "Smallville", do you regret turning down the "Tru Calling" role?
No, not at all. The crew is great and I would not change my choice for anything in the world. There's only one thing that rather worries me a bit. For now, Jason, my character, is very gentle with Lana. He's supposed to be very much in love with her wants her to be happy, but I have to wonder how long that will last... In fact, at this moment I don't quite know what the writers have in store for my character’s development, and I admit that it worries me slightly. I could very well soon be the new villain in "Smallville".
One could say that you are a TV Series regular. Do you have the desire of moving on to the big screen?
I would not be honest if I said that the big screen doesn’t interest me. However, as long as I'm offered interesting and motivating roles in television, I don’t see why I would refuse them. I landed role after role in "Dark Angel", "Dawson's " and "Smallville" and I'm as just as excited as I was eight years ago when I first came to Hollywood… So, for the time being I will continue on TV.
Do you keep in touch with actors you have met in your previous series?
To say that I’m friends with all the actors I have crossed paths with in my previous jobs would be a bit too much. Even though I have generally gotten along with my peers, our relationships have been limited to the shooting of the series. You know, when an actor says that the atmosphere on set is great, it does not mean he spends all his weekends with his co-stars. From time to time I talk to Jessica Alba, Katie Holmes or Joshua Jackson on the telephone, but it is rare that we manage to find the time for a drink. It's something I regret...

Jensen Ackles is ''Dark Angel's Night Owl''
Hunky Jensen Ackles says acting gives him the freedom to stay out as late as he likes. e's no nine-to-fiver - in fact he thrives after dark. That's why you'll never hear Jensen complaining that he has to work awkward hours.
Most actors go on about how busy they are, how hard they work and how little time they have to spend at home. Jensen Ackles of Dark Angel fame is different. For him acting means freedom, the freedom to stay up as late as he likes (he's a real night owl) and not to be chained to a desk from 9 to 5. And freedom is the reason he decided to become an actor and not follow his brother into the computer business, the career he first considered.
Jensen had enough experience of the entertainment industry to know what he was in for though. He was four when he first worked as a model - and 14 when modeling caused his most embarrassing moment ever.
He was on a campus doing a jeans shoot. The problem was the pants were three sizes too small and there wasn't time to find bigger ones - so the bottom was cut out so he could get into them. There he stood putting a good face on things while behind him the students were laughing fit to bust! No wonder he decided to explore other options, albeit in a related field.
His dad Alan was an actor making good money doing advertising in the Dallas area and Jensen began thinking of going in that direction. "My dad was really doing well," says the 24-year-old hunk. "He was also always able to be there for us when we were little. He didn't work fixed hours like the other dads so he always had time to watch me, my brother and sister play sport."
Looking back Jensen feels he made the right choice. "I can see why my dad opposed my decisions - this is a demanding career. But it gives you something precious: time. And that's a freedom not many jobs give you."
It seems Jensen not only has the freedom to play at home - he has the freedom to do it on screen, too. This week you can watch him, in the guise of Eric Brady, almost kiss Greta von Amburg in the soap Days or our lives. It might just be what Eric needs to forget Nicole Walker who so sweetly stole and broke his heart.
In the meantime Dark Angel's coming to an end. Even though it was wildly popular it simply cost too much to make, so after two seasons it's being cancelled. It's probably director James Cameron's fault. When he made the movie Titanic he got used to spending large amounts of cash that were a record even for Hollywood. He probably wasn't about to cut back just because he was working for the small screen.
Jensen may be upset he's losing such a great role, but he has to be pleased to be getting out of freezing cold Vancouver, where Dark Angel is shot. He's a Texan who's more comfortable with really high temperatures. "But I guess I got used to it," he says ruefully.
He accepts keeping on the move is part of the job. "I see it as a chance to see the world. I can sample different cities, people and lifestyles. You take from it what you can."
Since Dark Angel Jensen has starred in the mini-series Blonde opposite Poppy Montgomery in the role of Marilyn Monroe. "My character is the son of a famous '40s film star; a real Hollywood spoilt brat and not the kind of character I usually play. I prefer the good guys."
He feels his three years in the set of Days taught him a lot. "I learnt a series like that is a team effort and what happens behind the camera is as important as what happens in front. People think it's all about the actors but we're just one link in a chain."
He's gained a modest fame. "It's thanks to the people who enjoy what you do that you keep working," he says. "I often did special appearances while I was in Days and I enjoyed it as much as the soap fans did."
Jensen has also found out what it's like to be the object of gossip thanks to his close relationship with country singer LeeAnn Rimes. "My family enjoys the buzz," he says. "It's better being written about than not at all - provided they spell your name right!"
He has no idea what he's going to do next by he's not letting that give him sleepless nights. He keeps a fan going in his room to keep the night sounds at bay. "I'm a light sleeper and even the sound of crickets and faraway cars can bother me. But once I'm asleep I'm gone. Then the only thing that can wake me is one of those irritating beeper alarms."
He's usually up and at 'em at 6 am, even though he's a night owl. He shares a house with three friends from Dallas and a dog - appropriately named Dallas - and is dating Lisa Ridge, a UCLA graduate. Hopefully she can attest to his reputation as a romantic. He loves candlelight, horse riding and the smell of a campfire. His favourite romantic movie is When a Man loves a Woman starring Meg Ryan, and she's also his favourite actress.
There isn't much that scares Jensen but he confesses he does have one secret fear. "That I'll change. Not be myself anymore. Become too Hollywood."

Possessing prince-like features and pensive hazel eyes, Jensen Ackles started his entertainment career as a model. From magazines to television commercials, Jensen was a star. On a more personal note, Jensen's most treasured possession is his pink stuffed pig...plus, of course, his friends and family. Since he gets homesick quite often, Jensen's grandmother likes sending him notes and cards once a week. Being in one of NBC's hottest soap operas, Jensen maintains a busy schedule, meaning the only way his family can see him regularly is via television.
When being asked what his ultimate wish would be, Jensen expressed his desire to fly ("It's a bird, it's a plane, no...it's Jensen Ackles!"
. Despite his wish to navigate the sky, Jensen's head is anything but in the clouds. This newfound teen idol isn't fazed a bit by his popularity among soap fans and screaming teenage girls. Nevertheless, he would probably thank God for his success in the showbiz industry--Jensen always remembers to say his prayers. Granted from recently being on the cover of TV Guide and receiving frequent coverage from a plethora of soap opera magazines, it looks like his prayers have been answered
Jensen Ackles fashion style
"I always want to look presentable," says Jensen Ackles (Eric, DAYS), a 6-foot, 175-pound Texas native. By his own admission, however, he's not big on what's trendy in fashion. Formal occasions mean looking in his closet, choosing either his charcoal gray or olive green suit; and zeroing in on a shirt and tie that appeal to him at that moment. "I'm not into spending an hour in front of the mirror. What matters is that what I'm wearing fits and feels good."
Most of Ackles' clothes are purchased by him at the mall. "I'm not a particular store shopper," says the hazel-eyed, dark blonde heartthrob. "But I do like Hugo Boss because his stuff fits well, and Abercrombie & Fitch has a lot of comfortable clothes. I'll buy things when I'm out and about and not looking for anything specific."
How does he dress when he's not in front of the camera ? "Khakis or jeans and a T-shirt or sweater---and a hat. I always wear hats." Among his collection are cowboy hats, baseball caps, and stocking caps.
"More than anything else, I've accumulated a lot of T-shirts." Ackles says, "and I don't want to get rid of any of them."
Even so, once a year he does go through his things, tossing items which he no longer likes. His brown, leather cowboy boots are another story. "I've had them for about four years, and I wear them to work and to kick around. I also must have my running shoes."
He owns three pairs of Adidas running shoes and purchases new ones before the old ones are worn. "I'll buy a new pair because I like them," he adds.
Ackles isn't a fan of electric razors, preferring a no-frills number that he uses with any kind of shaving cream that's around. "Just so long as it's something that doesn't smell bad," he says. "Usually I'll buy whatever is on sale." The same goes for the way the actor selects his shampoos and conditioners.
Ackles' only concession to vanity is using Oil of Olay lotion. "My mother has always used it, and she got me hooked," he says. "If my skin is dry, I'll put some on my face after I shave."
When he attended high school, Ackles was heavily into sports. "I played just about every sport you can think of," the handsome 20-year-old recalls, "including baseball and lacrosse."
To fill the void these days, he goes to the gym at least four to five days a week. "I try to work out almost every day on the treadmill for 25 minutes, and I'll lift weights for about 30 minutes," Ackles says. "I just do what I'm in the mood for."
Luckily, Ackles doesn't have a weight problem, so he can indulge in his favorite craving: Gummy Bears.
"I don't smoke," he says. "I'm not old enough to drink, but I love Gummy Bears. I have to make myself stop eating them because I can easily eat a pack or two at a time." When he's out of Gummy Bears, he'll head straight for the refrigerator shelf that holds the yogurt.

Jensen Ackles brings new changes to ''Smallville''
Kristin Kreuk, who plays Lana Lang in The WB's Superman series Smallville, told SCI FI Wire that the show is entirely different this season and that her character has undergone changes as well. "That's actually quite fun for me," Kreuk said in an interview while promoting her latest project, SCI FI Channel's upcoming original miniseries Legend of Earthsea. "I enjoying changing it up."
Among other things, Kreuk's Lana has developed a new relationship with Jason Teague (Jensen Ackles), a storyline that will continue to develop. "The show has evolved a lot," Kreuk said. "They were going darker last year, which I actually thought was quite interesting, going more adult and a little darker. But it wasn't appealing to the same audience anymore. So they brought it back to being more youth-oriented, and there's more and I think the storylines are starting to shift again. There were a lot of shuffles in The WB itself this year, so powers were kind of shifting, and I think the direction of the show got confused. But now it's coming together, and all these really great storylines that we have are being fleshed out a little more."
Kreuk declined to discuss details. "I'm just going to be selfish about this, because I really only know where I'm going, mostly," Kreuk said. "But we've got the storyline with Lana's tattoo.
